‘DARUMA’ (2024) The healing power of kindness and the importance of representation shine bright.

DARUMA

Daruma_KeyArt_10_Simplified

Director Alexander Yellen and writer Kelli McNeil expand their 2018 short film of the same name to glorious big screen life. DARUMA tells the story of, Patrick, a bitter wheelchair user, discovering he has a four-year-old daughter from a forgotten fling. He quickly learns that he cannot parent her as she needs and enlists the help of his cantankerous neighbor Robert (double amputee) to transport her to live with her maternal grandparents on the other side of the country.

daruma PatrickDaruma deals with addiction, PTSD, and redemption in an honest way. There is zero sugarcoating. Immersive camera work helps place the viewer in Patrick’s emotionally injured mindset by placing the camera in his lap whenever he gets intoxicated in a club. Yellen’s overall cinematography is spectacular. His choice to mix follow shots, close-ups, and stunning drone footage while our players embark on their road trip captures Daruma’s vulnerability and heart.

Little Victoria Scott gives Camilla authentic sweetness. She’s a lovely addition to this cast. Barry Bostwick lends his unassailable talent to Daruma. Whatever role he plays, you can bet on some seriously affecting moments.

daruma RobertJohn W. Lawson is undeniably charming as curmudgeonly neighbor Robert. His nuanced backstory is the perfect foil for Tobias Forrest. You’ll fall in love with him. Forrest gives his all, leaning into Patrick’s flaws and working to find his suppressed humanity. Forrest nails each beat. He and Lawson share relatable chemistry. It’s a dramedy duo you didn’t know you needed.

Yellen and McNeil deliver a genuine road movie with struggles and hopeful healing vibes. If you aren’t welling up by the film’s ending, check your pulse. Representation is vital to authentic storytelling. The world needs more films like DARUMA. The film will be honored at the Directors Guild of America on Dec. 9th at the first-ever Indie Awards. It is much-deserved recognition.

The film will be screening for a week in theaters in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, DC, and Minneapolis Nov 15 – 21, 2024.

else 1

A mysterious disease that merges living beings with their physical surroundings leads to a lockdown. After a one-night stand, uptight and brilliant hypochondriac Anx and free-spirited, flighty Cassandre find themselves in forced cohabitation. This odd couple fills the hours dancing, having sex, walking down memory lane, and chatting with neighbors through the vents. When suddenly confronted by an attack inside the apartment, Anx and Cassandre’s survival mode turns into something entirely different. ELSE supplies the shivers to Screamfest 2024 audiences. Get ready for some serious weirdness.

else 2Beautiful camera work has an immersive feel. Eccentric production design initially mirrors Anx’s graphic artist occupation, eventually morphing to match the ever-evolving circumstances of the disease. There is a Tim Burton/JimHenson-esque quality to the creature fx. A grotesque whimsy that makes it difficult to look away.

Matthieu Sampeur and Edith Proust give us magnificent performances. The script possesses a dark inevitably the longer they are together. Director Thibault Emin, alongside co-writers Alice Butaud and Emma Sandona, delivers a surprising link to childhood trauma in Anx. The existential aspect creeps up on you and burrows under your skin. The psychosexual element is bonkers. ELSE is a genre-obliterating love story.

‘THE HOUSE FROM’ (2024) A nostalgia-filled, pop culture delight.

smodfest 2024 selectionTHE HOUSE FROM
The House From... (2024) - www.imdb.com

Tommy Avallone‘s film delves into the positive and negative effects of being the homeowner of famous homes. Jason Lee narrates with his perfectly delicious tone and delivery. From Twilight to Home Alone, and Full House to Sex And The City, THE HOUSE FROM is every movie and television fan’s dream doc.

The House From Full HouseThe editing is clever. For example, one former owner of Jesse’s house in Breaking Bad house was a teacher, so Avallone cuts to scenes of Walter White in his chemistry classroom. She was able to buy her son his first car from the profits of filming. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the current owner of Walter White’s house aggressively hates tourists.

The House From FridayTHE HOUSE FROM counters this negative fan experience with the owner of The Goonies‘ home. Susan Preston got a bad rap. This redemptive story is authentically heartwarming. Bushnell Ave, in South Pasadena, is the ultimate film fan’s dream. From Back to the Future to Old School, it boasts several famous houses, and the owners love the fans. The Rubio House in Altadena is iconic. I lost track of the number of films and television shows listed by the owner, Liz. Ethan Embry visits the house, and his excitement and nostalgia are infectious.

The House From Home AloneThe doc also uses TikTok and other social media clips of fan visits. The behind-the-scenes footage from Home Alone takes the cake. The lovely neighbors across the street took camcorder video from their front yard during the 1990 production, and it is a coup for Gen X and Millennials.

Some locations become pilgrimages, delivering the warm fuzzies and catharsis for fans. From museums to Airbnbs, whether these locations are now for-profit venues or warm family homes, THE HOUSE FROM is a joy from start to finish. Audiences will find themselves smiling and maybe even digging up some old VHS tapes from their parent’s basements after the credits roll. Speaking of, stick around for even more fun.

The House From Trailer:

The documentary premiered at Kevin Smith’s Smodcastle Film Festival in New Jersey on October 25, 2024. It will be released on Fubo and executive producer Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort Channel on October 27, 2024, and will be available on VOD platforms the next day.

Filmmaker Fabio D’Orta‘s THE COMPLEX FORMS plays Screamfest 2024. The film follows a group of men who sell their bodies for temporary possession by an unknown entity that emerges from the woods. In an ancient Italian villa, our characters work until chosen. Upon seeing the horrors that await them, the roommates decide to run.

The Complex Forms 3A sweeping opening shot accompanied by Riccardo Amorese‘s booming cinematic score immediately grabs your attention. The location is exquisite, with sprawling grounds and old-world villa architecture. THE COMPLEX FORMS is visually spectacular at every turn. Our mysterious entities remind me of the darkest Jim Henson creatures and Moana’s villainous crab, Tamatoa.

The Complex Forms 2David Richard White gives leading man Christian an intriguing mix of fear and determination. Aided by D’Orta’s sharp cinematography, White compels you to root for him.

THE COMPLEX FORMS gives audiences much to chew on in 74 minutes. The double-entendre title is particularly clever. The film boasts a finale you will never see coming. Fabio D’Orta is an undeniable visionary.

‘BA’ (Screamfest 2024) A deal with the devil and desperation.

Screamfest 2020 banner logoBA

BA - 2024 Screamfest Horror Film Festival - screamfest2024.eventive.orgYou’re damned if you do, and you’re damned if you don’t. In Benjamin Wong‘s Screamfest 2024 film BA, a father in dire straights makes a supernatural bargain with hideous consequences. On a mission to provide a better life for his young daughter, Daniel must reap souls until he settles his debt. His appearance is a decaying skeleton, names carved into his skin, and physical touch kills any living thing. But, if he breaks the otherwordly agreement, it could be deadly.

ba still 1Daniel’s challenges are plenty. Besides the Faustian bargain, he must keep his features hidden from his daughter. If she comes in contact with her, she will perish. He makes extra cash by working nights for a near-blind convenience store owner. He walks in the daylight draped in clothing to conceal his literal Death mask. With Collette missing school, Daniel must also dodge child services.

Ba still 2The FX makeup is sleek and scary, and the team matches Daniel’s reflection moments. Kai Cech delivers a lovely performance as Collette, giving her natural innocence and an appropriate fear of abandonment. Lawrence Kao gives a relatable turn, making impossible decisions that any parent would replicate in his position. It is a nuanced role, and Kao brings us along on his emotional rollercoaster with gentle hands.

The film is an intriguing mix of desperate times call for desperate measures, and a unique canon. There is enough meat on the bone to expand the film into a series. It’s not gruesome and nails the fantasy aspect. BA is a PG-13 graphic novel foray into the genre.

‘LA COCINA’ (2024) As complex as Shakespeare and an ode to those behind the scenes.

Willa logoLa Cocina

La Cocina poster(2024) - www.imdb.comBased on the 1957 stage play The Kitchen by Arnold Wesker, filmmaker Alonso Ruizpalacios brings LA COCINA to the big screen. This exquisite drama follows the staff at a restaurant in Times Square and the coordinated (and uncoordinated) chaos behind the scenes. It is a beautiful character study that will punch you in the gut.

The black and white cinematography from Juan Pablo Ramirez screams stage play in all the best ways. Mixed with intimate closeups and follow shots, it is an intricately choreographed dance boasting framing that will linger long after the credits roll.

The opening monologue sets the scene for the city’s chaotic reality. The dialogue is funny, authentic, and brutal. Performances are top-notch across the board. The delicious ensemble cast nails every beat.

Motell Foster plays dessert chef, Nonzo. His philosophical kindness makes him something like the Gandolf of the kitchen. Foster is magnificent. Oded Fehr plays The Grill’s owner with an overbearing swagger that slowly spoils as the plot thickens. Fehr delivers the irony of the American Dream.

La Cocina still

Laura Gómez lives in her role as a waitress on her first day. Gómez’s intensity is transformative. Anna Diaz gives Estela the wide-eyed, tentative nature that represents the inner voice of the entire staff.

Rooney Mara plays Julia with a fiery sass and life-weathered exhaustion. Raúl Briones delivers humor and depth as Pedro. His cheeky personality is a facade for unresolved trauma. Mara and Briones have a fierce chemistry akin to Beatrice and Benedick in Shakespeare‘s Much Ado About Nothing. But it is Raúl Briones who owns the heart of this brilliant film. This performance is nothing short of award-worthy.

LA COCINA confronts racism and socioeconomic privilege head-on. The script challenges cultural boundaries. The characters are a melting pot that perfectly captures the true essence of the city and, quite frankly, America. Any real New Yorker will tell you that at any given moment, LA COCINA is happening in real time. It’s an unforgettable emotional rollercoaster

La Cocina Logo 7T095119.060SYNOPSIS: It’s the lunch rush at The Grill in Manhattan, and money has gone missing from the till. All the undocumented cooks are being investigated, and Pedro (Briones) is the prime suspect. He’s a dreamer and a troublemaker, and in love with Julia (Mara), an American waitress who cannot commit to a relationship. Rashid, The Grill´s owner, has promised to help Pedro with his papers so he can “become legal”. But a shocking revelation about Julia compels Pedro to spiral into an act that will stop the production line of one of the city’s busiest kitchens once and for all.

La Cocina is a tragic and comic tribute to the invisible people who keep our restaurants running and our stomachs full, whilst chasing a perhaps unreachable version of the American dream.

‘IN THE NAME OF GOD’ (Screamfest 2024) A twisted tale of fanaticism and the supernatural.

in the name of God posterin the name of God posterIn filmmaker Ludvig Gür’s IN THE NAME OF GOD, a young priest struggling to inspire his congregation rekindles a relationship with his long-lost mentor. Jonas’ Old Testament-style promises of a higher calling come with a caveat. The Lord grants him special healing powers only when Theodor sacrifices bad people.

The first half challenges your moral compass. Once investigative journalist Erik enters the scene, the plot shifts to an even darker realm. Theodor’s actions are now directly tied to the life of his wife. The consequences of his failure lead us to another twist.

in the name of godPerformances are solid across the board. Thomas Hanzon gives Jonas a self-assuredness that simultaneously comforts and terrifies. It is an effortlessly unsettling turn. Vilhelm Blomgren is journalist Erik. Blomgren represents the audience in an emotionally turbulent performance.

Our leading man, Linus Wahlgren, tackles the role of Theo with equal parts fear and passion. What begins with the best of intentions quickly turns into trapped desperation. Wahlgren delivers palpable horror.

The script offers a slick balance of religious fanaticism, cult leanings, and the supernatural. Visually, Old Testament drawings serve as subtle omens. There is no traditional gore. The investigatory angle serves a dual and undeniably clever purpose. IN THE NAME OF GOD boasts a final third that completely blindsided me. Its nail-biting, endless twists captivated me.

The final shit is so bold you will both scream at the screen and slow clap. IN THE NAME OF GOD earns high praise as an exceptional addition to Screamfest 2024.

‘ABOVE THE KNEE’ (Beyond Fest 2024) This visceral ride into madness is body horror at its finest

ABOVE THE KNEE

WORLD PREMIERE / RELEASED IN: 2024 / 76 MINUTES / DIRECTED BY: VILJAR BØE

Above_the_Knee_1.1.64

Norwegian filmmaker Viljar Bøe brings his psychological thriller ABOVE THE KNEE to Beyond Fest 2024. The film follows Amir, a man who has a rare psychological disorder called BID (Body Integrity dysmorphia). It is the desire to have a sensory or physical disability or discomfort with being able-bodied.

The film is one of the most anxiety-inducing watches I’ve experienced in a long time. Amir has to hide his plans from his longtime living girlfriend, Kim. He also uses his friend, Jonas, as a cover, taking advantage of his kindness.

His accelerated timeline and subsequent countdown appear on the screen. With each passing day, Amir’s visions of the gnarly deterioration of his leg haunt us, and so does his gross manipulation of those who care for him most.

Above the knee still 1His only outlet is Rikke, a woman whose own BID diagnosis manifests as self-induced blindness. As his accomplice, she offers him emotional and physical support and lines are easily blurred.

An incredibly effective transition device is the jarring image of a bloodied saw accompanied by viscerally augmented audio of cutting. This image repeats from slightly different angles and undeniably induces a shiver each time.

The one hour and twelve on my minute runtime is more than enough, with Viljar Bøe carefully crafted script. The film is based on a story concept by Bøe and leading man Freddy Singh. Singh delivers an award-worthy turn, existing a in morally gray area. ABOVE THE KNEE takes us into the darkest corners of the mind, boasting a shockingly sinister finale. You won’t be the same.

‘GIRL INTERNET SHOW: A KATI KELLI MIXTAPE’ (Fantastic Fest 2024) An experimental greatest hits documentary of a pioneering goddess.

girl internet show: kati Kelli poster

This brand-new feature-length “mixtape” unearths and reintroduces a stunning, singular body of work by the enigmatic Kati Kelli, an outsider video artist and digital native whose subversive online uploads push at the seams of the digital form. For nearly a decade before her passing in 2019, Kati ran “Girl Internet Show,” a YouTube channel, parasocial experiment, and epically deranged one-woman universe built from scratch in her bedroom. This hand-made mixtape by Jane Schoenbrun and Jordan Wippell features a lovingly curated selection of Kati’s online work, unreleased videos, and her first (and final) short film opus Total Body Removal Surgery.

girl internet show Kati Kelli still 1

Kelli’s videos range from character work, songs, artistic interpretation, and brief mundane behind-the-scenes footage, almost always direct to the camera. She is effortlessly funny, undeniably weird, and an improv queen. Her editing skills are mind-blowing.

girl internet show kati kelliKelli is a star. She has that sardonic wit you see in Aubrey Plaza. Frankly, if you told me they were blood relatives, I would accept that as fact. Also, it’s impossible to ignore how stunning she is.

I found myself mesmerized, even as some of Kelli’s sketches stretch on well past a comic norm. You just keep watching. Girl Internet Show is equal parts entertainment and voyeuristic pleasure. Teaming Jordan Wippell (who was also Kati’s partner) and Jane Schoenbrun makes so much sense. It is a creative marriage of deeply like-minded genius, and I know Kati would approve.

girl internet show: a kati Kelli Mixtape bannerThe film ends with Kati’s short film, finished three days before her passing. The subject is both ironic and eerie. Going in with the understanding that Kati is no longer with us weighs heavy in the back of your mind. Knowing what a massive star she was and how much bigger she could have been leaves a sting, but GIRL INTERNET SHOW: A Kati Kelli Mixtape celebrates an artist in all her magnificence. It’s an unforgettable film. Kelli lives forever, an eternal celluloid angel. She flies.

Parvulos poster

Filmmaker Isaac Ezban brings Fantastic Fest 2024 PÁRVULOS, the story of three siblings surviving in the woods by scavenging in a virus-ravaged world. The dangerous secret they harbor in the basement may be their undoing.

The cinematography is something to behold. The sepia-toned lens locks you into a compelling plot. It creates this magical, borderline eerie feeling. The production design team is aces with children’s drawings and makeshift inventions. The post-apocalyptic aspects are relatively subtle but incredibly effective. The end credits are outstanding. The original song “Our People Need Our Help” is a certified banger.

PÁRVULOS_StillTwo surprising performances will blow you away, but I won’t spoil that with specifics. I will only say that Norma Flores and Horacio Lazo give us everything they’ve got. Our three young brothers are magnificent. Mateo Ortega Casillas gives Benny the right amount of innocence and rebellion. Leonardo Cervantes delivers vulnerability and compassion as Oliver. Farid Escalante Correa gives Salvador a perfect mix of resentment and raging hormones. Together, they warm and break your heart.

The film’s tone takes an unexpectedly amusing twist once Benny learns the secret that Oliver and Salvador keep in the basement. Benny convinces his brothers that normalcy can return if they try hard enough. Their unrelenting determination hits a snag when a young woman crashes their holiday plans. The film takes another turn during its nearly two-hour run. A wildly dark finale holds you captive.

PÁRVULOS has enough meat on the bone for a series. Visually striking, beautifully acted, and ceaselessly compelling. Is it not only a highlight of Fantastic Fest, but one of the year’s best films, period.

Fantastic Fest alum Mercedes Bryce Morgan brings her latest in BONE LAKE, a psychosexual game of sex, lies, and videotape. Two very different couples find themselves double booked at a palatial lakeside Airbnb. Sage and Diego are in a relationship rut, while Cin and Will are hot and heavy. Awkwardness turns into friendship. When the four unlock three mysterious rooms, each has a theme that spurs trouble and begins a game of cat-and-mouse that turns the tables on everyone. BONE LAKE is here to titillate and transfix even the hardest-to-please genre fan.

Performances are fantastic across the board. Marco Pigossi and Maddie Hasson have an organic chemistry that draws you in. Their relatable personalities and quiet conflicts are perfect foils for Will and Cin. Andra Nechita and Alex Roe are master manipulators playing Will and Cin. They tap into Diego’s insecurities and Sage’s emotional/sexual frustration. Writer Joshua Friedlander gives them a divide-and-conquer playbook that will infuriate audiences, which is a compliment. This diabolical dynamic is juicy.

Clever camera work connected to the locks acts as a subconscious double entendre. The editing is a triumph. The FX team deserves a standing ovation. Genre fans might think they’ve caught on halfway through the film, but the reveal is clever, and it won’t be the last. BONE LAKE is a solid erotic thriller that pushes all the boundaries and buttons. ‘SUPERBOYS OF MALEGAON’ (TIFF 2024) A jubilant celebration of film and friendship

tiff 2024bannerSUPERBOYS OF MALEGAON

Superboys-of-Malegaon_01Director Reema Kagti brings TIFF ’24 audiences a dramatized version of the 2008 documentary Supermen of Malegaon. The film begins in 1997 and follows aspiring amateur filmmaker Nasir Shaikh and fellow hometown artists in Malegaon, India. SUPERBOYS OF MALEGAON is a story of small-town dreams coming true. Get ready to feel all the feels.

Learning editing techniques from local VHS sellers, Nasir makes unique splices to films, selling more and more tickets to his small movie house. But the police halt the illegal viewings, alongside the customary cultural bribe, leaving Nasir and his friends with little hope. Genius sparks when they realize they can make parody versions of their favorite films.

From conception to writing, casting to makeup, dialogue memorization to shooting, SUPERBOYS OF MALEGAON delivers every moment of revelry, hardship, and passion. Egos clash, promises and hearts get broken, hard truths are exposed, and betrayals break friendships. How can such deep-felt hurt heal?

The story jumps to 2004, only to find Nasir’s original success waning. His crew of friends finally grasp how he has coveted the spotlight and the money. When loyalty and interest in Nasir’s parodies wear thin by 2010, devastating news prompts cinematic and relationship magic.

The cinematography by Swapnil S. Sonawane is stunning. Accompanied by Sachin Jigar‘s infectious original score, it establishes the tone immediately. Performances are spectacular across the board. Each cast member gives audiences the full spectrum of their emotional range, and it is damn impressive.

It celebrates the art of indie filmmaking, the community it builds, and how many hands and minds go into the creative process. SUPERBOYS OF MALEGAON is a joy-filled watch, perfectly balanced with hard-hitting emotional journeys. It honors dreamers and doers alike. It is an undeniable crowd-pleaser.

‘THE SWEDISH TORPEDO’ (TIFF 2024) A deeply affecting sports docudrama about a little known feminist icon, director Frida Kempff brings inspiration and human complexity.

tiff 2024bannerTHE SWEDISH TORPEDO

The Swedish-Torpedo_Still_01Frida Kempff brings TIFF 2024 audiences the true story of Sally Bauer, a single mother attempting to swim the English Channel in 1939. THE SWEDISH TORPEDO is a unique and multilayered sports docudrama. It will take you by surprise.

Josefin Neldén is utterly mesmerizing as Sally Bauer. She delivers a beautiful turn as a desperate single mother with fearless hope and the ingenuity to eschew societal expectations. Neldén carefully navigates the myriad of complicated relationships in Sally’s life, from her judgemental family, the father of her child, and her son Lars. She has a spirited likeability that draws you in.

Bauer travels an uphill battle in every sense, from poverty to her affair with Lars’ married father, from her gender to impending war. Sally’s efforts soon become a misogynistic commodity as Henry and sponsors woo her with promises, but at what cost? Kempff tackles the insurmountable sacrifices of the sports world, particularly the challenges of being a female athlete.

The overall look is stunning. The natural lighting and costumes are all set against sweeping green cliffs and stormy seas. THE SWEDISH TORPEDO plays out in the days leading up to WWII, heightening every moment. Martin Dirkov‘s score does the same.

THE SWEDISH TORPEDO is exhilarating and heartfelt. Kempff and co-writer Marietta von Hausswolff von Baumgarten establish an authentic emotional connection to Sally’s dreams and sadness. The film delves into the darkness of motherhood and autonomy on levels only caregivers can begin to understand. It will reach audiences far and wide.

‘VIKTOR’ (TIFF 2024) A striking and awe-inspiring doc about a deaf person’s experience with war.

tiff 2024bannerVIKTOR

viktorViktor wants to be a soldier, but his deafness prevents it. His late father instilled “the military spirit,” and by Miyamoto Musashi’s canonical The Strategy of the Samurai, Viktor aspires to a noble warrior philosophy. Facing rejection after rejection, he finally convinces the local army to take him on as a volunteer field photographer. This opportunity to pursue his talent changes his path forever.

Viktor poetically narrates his thoughts. It is like a love letter to his deceased father. The audio comes in dynamic forms, hyper-augmented and muffled. It is the way our protagonist receives the sound. Director and veteran war photographer Olivier Sarbil hired the sound design team that worked on TIFF ’19 Platform contender Sound of Metal. It creates a dazzling effect, placing the viewer in Viktor’s body and mind, if only for 90 minutes.

The score is haunting and melancholy. The stunning black and white cinematography mirrors Viktor’s still photography on the Nikon, often slung around his neck. Footage of the first attack on Ukraine by Russia is visceral in a way that caught me off guard despite knowing it was coming. Viktor and his mother hunker in their basement as air raid sirens wail overhead. Their anxiety is palpable. That is merely the beginning.

The cinematic style of the film is jarring but magnificent. Sarbil utilizes classically powerful angles and breathtaking closeups. It is almost easy to forget it is a documentary. Remembering rekindles the tension and fear.

The film dives into disability discrimination and the chaos of armed conflict. The final scene is perfection. VIKTOR is an exquisitely crafted war diary through a unique lens and perspective.

‘SHOOK’ (TIFF 2024) Amar Wala’s dramatic feature debut brings plenty of laughs and miles of heart.

SHOOK

Shook (2024)

Amar Wala‘s narrative feature debut, SHOOK, has arrived to wow TIFF 2024 audiences. Things are looking pretty bleak for Ashish. His parents are newly divorced. He is struggling to sell his first novel. His estranged father’s secret is simply the cherry on top. Then he meets Claire, and he must face all his demons.

Bernard White gives Vijay the fantastic edge of a sarcastic manchild with a soft underbelly. He is wonderful. Amy Forsyth is Claire. She brings both endless humor and a soft place for Ash to land.

Saamer Usmani delivers an impressive turn. He is incredibly charming, wading through self-doubt, cynicism, and healing. Forsyth and Usmani have electric chemistry. Theirs is a classicwhen you’re least expecting it” love story.

The cinematography is sharp. Peter Hadfield‘s framing is beautiful. The soundtrack is outstanding. No doubt you’ll be bopping your head throughout the film.

SHOOK is a family drama perfectly laced with laugh-out-loud dialogue. Wala and co-writer Adnan Khan draw inspiration from the director’s personal experiences with his father’s diagnosis with Parkinsons in his 20s. It is a complex story of reconciliation, generational communication differences, racism, and identity.

A relatable age and stage spiral and tale of getting your proverbial shit together, SHOOK is a gut punch that will undoubtedly stick with you long after the credits roll.

Johnny Ma
WORLD PREMIERE

Johnny Ma brings TIFF 2024 audiences a story where motherhood and meddling collide in a spectacularly magical fashion. Following a slip and fall on the ice, Sumi’s mother, Sara, arrives from Korea filled with worry and judgment. THE MOTHER AND THE BEAR is akin to a late-stage coming-of-age film, where an estranged mother-daughter blossoms in surprising ways.

The Mother and the Bear (2024) - www.imdb.comKim Ho-jung is magnificent. Sara’s journey spans motherhood, friendship, sleuthing, romance, and identity. Ho-jung embodies silliness, anxiety, boldness, and worldly naivete. She masters each moment with ceaseless charm. She is a star.

The film delves into culture, generational gaps, and familial boundaries with stunning levity. The score is lovely. Ma utilizes fantasy elements such as childish animation and slow-motion sequences. Sound editing plays a huge role in the film’s whimsical nature, with magical windchimes highlighting essential moments in Sara’s thought process. Ma gives her a loveable quality that is nothing short of captivating. Even if we cringe at her scheming, the audience roots for her growth at every turn. THE MOTHER AND THE BEAR is an undeniable gem at this year’s festival.

‘THE BECOMERS’ (2024) An out of this world bundle camp and quirk that perfectly nails human complexity.

darkstarlogoTHE BECOMERS

The Becomers_KeyArt_Theatrical_V4

THE BECOMERS follows two intergalactic lovers escaping their dying planet. Each lost on Earth, calling the other, and body snatching to blend into the human race. Filmmaker Zach Clark cleverly utilizes aliens as observers to tackle the complexity of human behavior. THE BECOMERS effortlessly joins the catalog of his previous quirky, indie gems. Each new beat gets weirder, and it is impossible to predict.

THE BECOMERS is bold, eschewing any societal norms. Have you ever seen an alien sex scene? Because you’re about to, and it is gooey. Russell Marl voices their backstory with a particular tone that perfectly encapsulates the film’s feel. Fritz Myers’ score is jarring and yet works perfectly. Myers also creates unique Alien vocalizations. The editing is delightful.

The performances from every cast member are spectacular. Karla Monay Shaw brings it home at the governor’s housekeeper, Femmy. Although her appearance is brief, she shows her acting chop. Keith Kelly delivers two distinct versions of Governor Olatka. Clark allows him to showcase quite the emotional rollercoaster.

Isabel Alamin (as Francesca) in The BecomersIsabel Alamin gives Francesca a tentative fear. She’s incredibly compelling. Molly Plunk and Mike Lopez‘s turns as couple Carol and Gordon. Their trust in Clark’s vision is evident. Plunk and Gordon embody the seemingly wacky premise and capture the sincerest longings within the slapstick comedy.

The longer I sat with THE BECOMERS, the more I realized that humanity’s behavior was far more disturbing than any alien display. It was a startling come to Jesus moment. Clark leans into what appears absurd until you conclude that it is merely a fanciful mirror of our hopes, dreams, irrationality, and means of survival. Don’t get me wrong. The camp and over-the-top scenarios solidly place the film in a sci-fi comedy genre, but underneath all the shenanigans is authentic heart.

THE BECOMERS comes to theaters  in New York on Friday, August 23rd

‘LIZZIE LAZARUS’ (Popcorn Frights 2024) A twisty horror mystery destined for cult status.

popcorn frights 2024 logo

LIZZIE LAZARUS

LizzieLazarus

Filmmaker Aviv Rubinstien gives Popcorn Frights 2024 audiences a reason to stand up and cheer with LIZZIE LAZARUS. Set in 1990, Bethany’s sister dies in a car crash on the way to her house. Lizzie’s mental state causes Bethany to question if her death was intentional. Enlisting the assistance of Lizzie’s ex, Eli, truth is stranger than fiction.

Tommy Oceanak‘s cinematography got a vehement “Hell Yeah” from me during the first frame. Opening with a song by Megan Oesterreich, in the titular role, I thought the film was a horror musical. I was mistaken, making the moment all the more delightful. Oesterreich is so likeable as Lizzie. I would watch a franchise surrounding Lizzie and Bethany.

Omar Maskati balances genuine feelings and suspect behavior. Rubinstien does an expert job at keeping you guessing, and Maskati leans into the crumbs, dropped one at a time. Lianne O’Shea gives Bethany a smart-aleck edge that lures you in. She is quippy and self-assured. O’Shea owns the frame, daring Maskati to keep up.

The screenplay utilizes conspiracy theories, scientific studies, and their naturally sparked debate from one intellectual to another. It’s easy to see that Bethany believes Eli has something to do with Lizzie’s demise, asking pointed questions along their clandestine midnight trek. She is suspicious and relentless in her pursuit to do right by her sister. Eli does not do himself any favors with a combative attitude. Secrets and confessions spill as they try to reach their destination and begin a reanimation ritual.

LIZZIE LAZARUS is a feminist-driven narrative that reels you in at every turn. Reveal after reveal keeps you on the hook. The finale is beyond satisfying for genre fans, anyone with sisters, and spooky girls alike.
