‘NIGHT OF THE REAPER’ (2025) Shudder Original delivers delicious tropes and twists.

shudder-logo-flatNIGHT OF THE REAPER

NIGHT OF THE REAPER Poster

A college girl returns home for a weekend and is pulled into babysitting the sheriff’s kid. Meanwhile, the sheriff receives haunting messages from old cases. In the small town of Reedy, something evil is brewing. Shudder Original NIGHT OF THE REAPER is genre throwback greatness.

Deena’s night of watching the sweetest little boy in the history of the profession turns into a living nightmare as things get more frightening by the minute. A hooded figure psychologically torments her while simultaneously sending Arnold on a wild goose chase. Every new clue leads to VHS tapes, each more torturous than the last.
NIGHT OF THE REAPER - Still 3Opening credits are fantastic. The production design team covers homes with classic ’80s Halloween decorations, and the repeated VHS static filter is chef’s kiss. Every single slasher trope we’ve come to love is utilized to build that creeping sense of dread. The synth score is fantastic. Homages to franchise favorites are endless. Everything from Poltergeist to Halloween, Max’s outfit looks like it’s straight out of Pet Sematery or a nod to Chucky, and the “Kimble, R” buzzer might just be a reference to Australian director Kimble Rendall.

NIGHT OF THE REAPER - Still 4Casting is delicious. Ben Cockell is outstanding as Chad. Summer H. Howell (Hunter Hunter) sets the scene, while genre regular, the spectacular Keegan Connor Tracy, rounds out the decades of final girl magic. Yes. Yes. Yes. Ryan Robbins gives Sheriff Arnold a down-to-earth quality, whose mournful past becomes the emotional anchor to his frustrations. Robbins is incredible, and I’m glad Christensen gave him such a meaty role. Jessica Clement delivers a nuanced performance as Deena. This is final girl realness. From petrified to powerhouse, Clement gives us her all. It is pure badassery.
NIGHT OF THE REAPER - Still 7Brandon Christensen, alongside his co-writer brother Ryan, understands how to build suspense while giving horror fans the kills they seek. As a fan of SUPERHOST, I am impressed by this narrative shift again and again. Christensen nails the element of surprise, flipping the script on their head when you least expect it. NIGHT OF THE REAPER is another solid addition to Shudder’s stacked catalog.

‘HAPPYEND’ (2025) A near-future warning and awakening

film movement logoHAPPYEND

Happyend poster

Two best friends’ high school prank leads to a school-wide surveillance state. With the country already on edge politically and everyone waiting for a massive impending earthquake, HAPPYEND creeps into your psyche as both a warning and a coming-of-age drama.

Kou and Yuta are obsessed with music. They make a habit of breaking into school to create dance tracks with their close group of friends. But, after their attempts to humble their principal, Big Brother enters the building to police their every move. The system is now rigged against them.

Filmmaker Neo Sora‘s dialogue is fantastic. The mixed feelings of best friends about to be torn apart by change, the comical made-up conversations from afar, and the authentic moments of growing up and growing apart. Sora opens fresh wounds at every turn. Bill Kirstein’s cinematography immediately sets the tone. He manages to capture the raucous joy of high school shenanigans and the disturbing advances in technological scrutiny.

Happyend main stillThis predominantly young cast is incredible. Yukito Hidaka is captivating as Kou. His brooding aura and genuine wonder are the perfect foil for Hayato Kurihara‘s intense Yuta. Each actor wears their heart on their sleeve.

HAPPYEND is an undeniably Orwellian, yet entirely relevant. The US is currently feeling the direct dystopian effects of hyper-surveillance as people of color are snatched off the streets at every turn, with assistance from DMV and court records. Protesters are no safer, unless in large numbers. Sora gives his young characters a platform to resist, and it is both heart-pounding and inspiring. It keenly reflects ever-evolving political landscapes everywhere.

He cleverly weaves together the climate crisis, young activism, and (very) near-future technology takeover. Quietly terrifying, we can pretend like HAPPYEND isn’t a glimpse into tomorrow. At its heart, the film is an effective teen drama set in the heightened and often Sisyphian world we’re leaving the next generation.

Happyend Trailer:

HAPPYEND, a near-future coming-of-age feature set in Tokyo, continues its international run with a limited U.S. theatrical release through Film Movement, starting in New York on September 12, 2025. U.S. theater locations and screening dates are available HERE.

‘GRIFFIN IN SUMMER’ (2025) Hilarious as it is heartfelt.

GRIFFIN IN SUMMER

GRIFFIN IN SUMMER - Poster

Filmmaker Nicolas Colia‘s irresistibly funny, semi-autobiographical coming-of-age GRIFFIN IN SUMMER is finally in theaters tomorrow. This massive hit from Tribeca 2025 sets the tone in its opening scene. We find our titular character at a Talent Show. While other kids sing off-key duets, the ambitious and undeniably talented 14-year-old Griffin performs a scene from his latest play, acting out both roles, of course. It is more Tennessee Williams than child’s play. Griffin is in another strosphere.

GRIFFIN IN SUMMER - 2As he prepares to self-fund his hefty two-act drama with his theatre “besties,” Griffin’s theatrical passion is further fueled by a tumultuous homelife. Colia delivers a truly tangible script. Griffin’s mom seems overwhelmed with her go-getter and rather demanding son, but under the surface, something else is simmering. She hires a neighbor’s son to help with yard cleanup. What begins as an annoyance to Griffin transforms into a sexual awakening, a test of relationships, and a piece of art that mirrors his unresolved trauma.

Kathryn Newton, once again, gives us a quirky, memorable character as Brad’s girlfriend. Abby Ryder Fortson is a gem as Griffin’s director friend, Kara. Melanie Lynskey elevates every single project she works on. Playing Helen, she has more depth than at first glance. She can do no wrong in my book.

Griffin in summer 1Owen Teague plays Brad with an initial aloofness that perfectly contrasts Griffin’s overzealous nature. As Teague taps into Brad’s motivation, *no pun intended,* the performance captivates in an entirely unexpected way. Everett Blunck is a star. His portrayal of Griffin feels like a documentary rather than a performance. It is one well beyond his years. He exudes fierce confidence that is infectious. Teague and Blunck have magnetic chemistry. Colia skillfully creates a subtle doppleganger effect between the two. It is an incredibly nuanced balance of characterization and performance.

Griffin is every tenacious theatre kid *cough, cough* who has a creative drive that is their lifesblood. When I was Griffin’s age, a teacher asked me why I liked theatre. Before I could answer, she suggested it is because it’s easier to put on a mask of a character. First, I was insulted. As a neurodivergent adult whose entire existence revolves around creation, art, and performance, she wasn’t wrong.

griffin in summer 3Colia cleverly speaks to art as catharsis, the plight of a tortured artist, and the meaning of authentic friendship. Existing between childhood and adulthood is wrought with emotional chaos, impossible questions, self-loathing, fear, and awkwardness. GRIFFIN IN SUMMER playfully touches on each of these with unfiltered heart and humor.

‘JAMES CAN EAT’ (2025) An eye-opening look into this stomach-churning sport.

Amazon_Prime_Video_tips_1JAMES CAN EAT

James can eat poster

Vlad Yudin‘s documentary JAMES CAN EAT dives into the dramatic world of competitive eating through the journey of Australian champion James Webb, AKA JWebby. The story brims with controversy, sabotage, favoritism, pride, and social media mayhem as James Webb faces adversity in pursuit of the ultimate competitive eating prize and his honor.

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of witnessing the annual celebration of gluttony, otherwise known as Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, you understand that there is nothing like it. I like to describe it as witnessing a car crash that people are cheering for. It is a visceral and shocking event. James’ goal is to improve every year while chasing the title.

JAMES CAN EAT_FILM MASTER_PRO RES V2.00_17_49_07.Still008The doc features sit-down interviews with the world’s most successful competitive eaters as well as James’ family members. The latter informs his motivation, from his love of soccer to bodybuilding. Yudin sets the audience up to root for James as we lead up to the 2023 Hot Dog Eating contest. 10 weeks out, and something diabolical occurs in middle America. We learn about the physical barriers, including his brutal two-year hospital stay after his Guillain-Barré diagnosis. But Webb refused to lose.

Webb’s rising star is a boost to the sport. The competitive eating veterans validate his abilities at every turn. Even the ultimate champ, Joey Chestnut, loves him. James’s success online also comes with the dark side of social media, as anonymous users question his integrity. Webb will go to any length to beat Joey, and with all due respect. The irony that runs through the film is jaw-dropping.

JAMES CAN EAT_FILM MASTER_PRO RES V2.00_08_08_02.Still003Doo Soo Kim‘s tight close-ups in the opening credits alongside the rather ominous score might make you think you’re about to watch a slasher film. If you can’t stand to witness grown men stuffing food into their mouths, then you might be right. Yudin subconsciously taps into the horror of it all.

If you think you’re not interested in competitive eating, think again. Yudin allows Webb to shine. Make no assumptions about James Webb. His personality is infectious, and his undeterred passion is inspiring. JAMES CAN EAT is an engrossing peek behind the scenes of the sport. Does James achieve his goal? You’ve gotta watch and find out. So much will have you shaking your head, and I, for one, will never look at Nathan’s contest with the same respect, but I will forever honor James Webb’s honesty.

‘DROWNING DRY’ (2025) A delicate balancing act of style and story.

dekanolog logoDROWNING DRY

drowning dry poster

Filmmaker Laurynas Bareiša brings the Lithuanian-Latvian drama DROWNING DRY to US audiences, beginning this Friday. Winning the Leopard for Best Direction at the Locarno International Film Festival, Bareiša serves as writer, director, and cinematographer. The story revolves around two sisters who plan a weekend getaway with their husbands and children. Following a tragic accident, both women navigate the complexities of trauma.

DROWNING DRY image 2The organic meandering of unplanned vacation time reads entirely authentic. The montage of the kids’ initial shenanigans and their mothers’ choreographed childhood dance are stand-out moments. At this point in the runtime (35 minutes), the audience could easily tap out. But the request for a swim and an innocent act of horseplay trigger a tonal shift.

DROWNING DRY image 7The film’s deliberate observational pace builds discomfort, only exacerbated by non-linear storytelling. The moment you realize what’s happening, it is like a punch to the gut. This decision will either tantalize audiences or turn them off. Performances are outstanding from our cast of only six. Bareiša’s camerawork is perfect for his stylistic choices. DROWNING DRY is a meditation on loss, examining the varying emotional reactions between the sexes. It is a film that will have you talking about it long after the screen goes dark.

‘SAINT CLARE’ (2025) Good vs Evil vs Structure.

Quiver LogoSAINT CLARE

SaintClare_Key Art

Mitzi Peirone gives audiences a mashup of ideas in SAINT CLARE. The film follows a college student who has a penchant for taking out bad guys in her sphere. A story of the morally gray, good vs evil, it’s something entirely different.

Girls keep going missing in her new town, and Clare wonders why no one seems to be focusing on the clues. Dealing with heavy childhood trauma, she discovers some seedy photos featuring her friends and one of the missing girls. This Nancy Drew on mushrooms narrative will have your head spinning.

Saint Clare (2024) - [www.imdb.com]Visually and technically stunning, if not a touch confusing storytelling-wise. The script has a Freighteners and Civil Dead meets The Sixth Sense vibe. The camerawork suggests potential mental illness in Clare. The audience constantly questions what is real.

SAINT CLARE_7Ryan Phillipe makes the best of a weird situation. Rebecca De Mornay is a fantastic addition. Frank Whaley made my heart skip a beat. He deserved way more screentime!

More Dexter than Joan of Arc, Bella Thorne‘s spitfire attitude makes SAINT CLARE compelling through the confusion. I could easily see her captivating in a role similar to Jennifer Garner in ALIAS. Honesty, Thorne could easily slot into a new season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones alongside Krysten Ritter. They would kick major ass together.

SAINT CLARE_2The film doesn’t know what genre it wants to be. There is comedy akin to Idol Hands (which is some of the strongest), drama like Pretty Little Liars, and mystery that is as whirlwind as Memento. It feels like a YA graphic novel with panels missing. If anything, SAINT CLARE does make me want to read Don Roff‘s source material, “Clare At Sixteen,” if only for some potential clarification.

‘DANIELA FOREVER’ (2025) Grief, guilt, and grace. Nacho Vigalondo delivers another stunner.

well go usa logoDANIELA FOREVER

daniela forever poster

Following the death of his beloved, Nicolas enters a visionary drug trial that lets him explore his relationship with new eyes and the boundaries of physics. Nacho Vigalondo‘s DANIELA FOREVER is an emotionally complex, visually stunning deep dive into grief.

daniela forever 3As Nicolas learns to navigate and control his time and environment with Daniela, real life pales in comparison. He selectively shares information with the scientists, and suddenly Daniela’s behavior evolves, allowing Nicolas to control her newly created memories. With each evolution of his dream states, Nicolas destroys the dimensions of reality, while also coming to terms with his selfish behavior.

daniela forever 2The lighting is dazzling. The stark visual contrasts, including varying aspect ratios, between the memory and the present, are incredible. The grainy, Super 8 camera effect screams sadness, while the sharp, CGI-enhanced dream state envelops the audience from every angle and emotion.

Henry Golding easily carries the film. He is brave, funny, and authentic. His chemistry with Beatrice Grannò is tangible. Nicolas’ emotional arc is fascinating, and Golding lives every beat. He is effortlessly charming and vulnerable.

daniela forever 1Fans of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind will instantly vibe with DANIELA FOREVER. Vigalondo delves into selfishness, manipulation, and jealousy through his penchant for magical realism, sci-fi, and visual spectacle. If you are familiar with his resume, you understand how perfectly this film slots into his catalog. This exploration of anguish is undeniably extraordinary, but more importantly, DANIELA FOREVER is about rediscovering what makes life glorious, cherishing the details, honoring the mundane, and remembering how much joy still exists. It very much tackles the adage, “If you love something, set it free.”

‘ALL ALONE TOGETHER’ (2025) Zero budget and immense talent. A fresh filmmaking team comes to life.

Ethos logoALL TOGETHER NOW

All-Alone-Together Poster

Maximus Jenkins delivers a twisted tale in the indie horror ALL TOGETHER NOW. A clever bait-and-switch, the film opens in a very meta way, with aspiring filmmaker Lincoln hitting it big following a festival screening. Real-world success gets complicated when the lines between his creation and trauma quickly blur.

All Alone Together 4This is the epitome of great indie filmmaking. Every aspect is genuinely impressive. Kaleb Manske‘s editing is jarring as hell, earning honest-to-goodness jump scares. The dynamic focus is incredibly effective. The soundtrack is fantastic. I’m obsessed with the repeated use of the “Always Forever ” track.

All Alone Together 2Alex Nimrod has a presence that reminds me of a cross between a young Matthew Broderick and bonafide Scream King, Justin Long. The camera loves him. He gives Lincoln charming discomfort at first. Nimrod has the chance to show his acting chops through through the subtle building of creepiness throughout the film. Lincoln’s perception of reality is thoroughly warped, sending the audience into a tailspin alongside him. Nimrod, who also pens the screenplay, goes there and never hesitates. A particular bathroom scene, one that would give any script supervisor a heart attack, is award-worthy.

all alone together 5ALL ALONE TOGETHER is a physical manifestation of unresolved trauma and suicidal ideation. The film is an undeniably slick piece of psychological horror. While it’s a deliberately dark journey down the rabbit hole and straight into hell, it’s also a sharp commentary about art as therapy.

All Alone Together Teaser Trailer:

ALL ALONE TOGETHER is now on VOD from Ethos Releasing

ALL ALONE TOGETHER is the debut feature film from 4085 Productions, a student-run production company that began during the COVID-19 pandemic when four Los Angeles college students decided to combat their isolation through the art of filmmaking.

Their first film made waves at Panic Fest, Popcorn Frights, and the Chicago Horror Film Festival, with Morbidly Beautiful raving, “Creative, engrossing, smartly scripted, and masterfully executed on a shoestring budget, ALL ALONE TOGETHER is meta-movie magic at its best.”

As a tormented filmmaker reaches new levels of success, the horrors of his film start to creep into his life. This shocking creepfest is at once a harrowing psychodrama of a broken man spiraling into paranoia, trauma, and guilt – all of which manifests as a monstrous entity – while also presenting a fascinating reflection on the cathartic power of filmmaking itself.

‘ZENITHAL’ (2025) Martial arts, mayhem, and a mechanical penis? And it all works brilliantly.

darkstarlogoZENITHAL

Zenithal Theatrical Poster

With my mouth agape at the absurdist plot, I guffawed 2 minutes into ZENITHAL, a bizarre love triangle that turns to murder, maniacal mayhem, and one mad surgeon. Director Jean-Baptiste Saurel has a hit on his hands that is unforgettable.

Ti-Kong is an action star who suffered from a freak mutation resulting in a giant penis. Dry cleaner Francis and martial arts teacher Sonia’s relationship has become strained as they agreed to be celibate for a year. Oh, and all three are also former co-stars. Following a humiliating breakup between Sonia and Francis, someone kills Ti-Kong most violently and unusually. He is “dickapitated,” and the tiny brain in the head of his giant penis is stolen.

ZENITHAL #1 © Jean-Baptiste Saurel _ 2024 - KAZAK PRODUCTIONS (2)Francis believes Sonia has told the police he is responsible, causing him to flee from the authorities. In his desperation, he finds solace in a laundry client who always seems to be wooing Francis away from his station. Turns out this man is no eye-fucking mechanic but a supervillain, woman-hating, mad surgeon named Doctor Sweeper, who wants to upgrade Francis with a massive robotic, brain-implanted penis and blow up the moon to disrupt menstrual cycles. (Still with me?)

ZENITHAL #5 ©Louis Lepron (2)Now, Sonia, Francis’ business partner Marcus, and a few ladies from Sonia’s Sexkido class (a method of martial arts that takes advantage of men’s depravity and returns power to women. While meant to be silly, I think it’s brilliant), must find Doctor Sweeper, save Francis, and clear his name.

Did you get all that? That’s only the first 38 minutes. ZENITHAL is like reading a graphic novel while on a mushroom trip but in the best way. The dialogue is a delicious, hypersexual double entendre. The comedy comes not only in the words but perfectly timed slapstick comedy pushed to the nth degree.

ZENITHAL #4 ©Louis Lepron (2)Performances from the entire cast are phenomenal. They land somewhere in between Austin Powers and Zoolander, with incredible one-liners and a 1000% commitment to the gag.

The cinematography is rom-com sharp. The fight choreography is hilarious. The use of “Behind Blue Eyes” is genius. Beyond all the chaos, ZENITHAL is a love story wrapped in incel culture. It’s a wildly funny, sex-positive crowdpleaser.

‘STAR PEOPLE’ (DWFLA 2025) There is destiny in the stars in Adam Finberg’s compelling debut.

Dances-With-Films-logo 2025STAR PEOPLE

Poster- STAR PEOPLE (Blue Harbor Entertainment)Adam Finberg‘s narrative feature debut, STAR PEOPLE, arrives to engross Dances With Films LA 2025 audiences. The film follows a photographer who receives a tip about the same strange lights she witnessed in childhood. But, a heatwave and tensions between unexpected guests threaten everything.

Star PeopleThe archival news footage sets a brilliant tone for STAR PEOPLE. Combining alien hunting with an immigration story is incredibly clever and entirely seamless. Finberg brilliantly tackles racism and the sick practices of border coyotes and anti-immigration militants. Everything is high stakes as temperatures rise to deadly levels, and the chance to solve Claire and Taylor’s biggest childhood mystery seems less and less likely.

Connor Paolo plays influencer Justin with a precise amount of self-absorption. Similar to his performance in 13 Reasons Why, Paolo elevates his scene partners with his presence. You will love to hate him in this role. Eddie Martinez is the perfect foil for Paolo, playing the dedicated father, Ricardo. He is passionate and kind, leaving the audience in the shoes of a desperate parent.

Star People Eddie Martinez and Adriana Aluna Martinez in STAR PEOPLE (Blue Harbor Entertainment)McCabe Slye is Claire’s junkie brother Taylor. Slye is outstanding, tapping into Taylor’s manic PTSD like a pro. He steals every frame he’s in. Kat Cunning‘s Claire is desperately chasing answers from childhood. Her comfort in front of the camera is unmatched. She and Slye’s chemistry is movie magic.

Aiden Chapparone‘s cinematography is beautiful. Paired with a perfect synth-inspired score from Reza Safinia, each element complements the next. Claire’s visions are a mix of memories and nightmares. To piggyback on her condition, a theory 3/4 of the way through from the rather loathsome Justin is like a gut punch. You’re so emotionally invested in Claire’s arc that you hope he’s wrong.

STAR PEOPLE truly grabs you from the very first frame. It is a film for dreamers, cynics, and stargazers alike. Mulder was right. The truth is out there. STAR PEOPLE embraces humanity at its best and worst.

Adam Finberg (Writer/Director/Producer)

Adam Finberg grew up in Phoenix, Arizona,, and moved to Southern California to attend the American Film Institute’s directing program. He’s worked the past 20 years as a writer, director, and editor. Star People is his first feature-length narrative film.

‘PINS AND NEEDLES’ (2025) Science and psychopaths make great bedfellows

filmhub logoPINS AND NEEDLES

PINS_AND_NEEDLES_Key_ArtFilmmaker James Villeneuve brings audiences a creative thriller ripped straight from global science and technology headlines. In PINS AND NEEDLES, a diabetic biology grad student’s ride back to campus turns deadly when a flat tire finds her trapped with two diabolical biohackers. With her insulin running dangerously low, Max must figure out a way to escape and take down a couple of psychopaths in the process.

PINS_AND_NEEDLES_03Max’s diabetic hallucinations are an incredibly creative way to use Daniel Gravelle and work out potential escape routes. Short and sweet fantasy sequences also keep your heart racing. I would have loved more of both. I do have a gripe about there being no food in the house. Emily and Frank very clearly live in the house, and there is not a single snack lying around.

PINS_AND_NEEDLES_04While Kate Corbett and Ryan MacDonald are sufficiently eccentric and evil as our whackjob “scientists,” PINS AND NEEDLES is 100% the Chelsea Clark show. She easily carries every scene with grace and ferocity while never going overboard. She is one to watch.

PINS_AND_NEEDLES_02I loved the use of car keys, and women will cheer that shit on. Did I yell at the screen during the finale? Damn right. PINS AND NEEDLES makes direct fun of billionaire Bryan Johnson. You know, the guy injecting himself with his son’s blood to stay young forever. And, just for your information, he’s moved on from that practice and opted for a “total plasma exchange” instead. Biohackers love to claim science when we all know damn well any fountain of youth is only for sale to the highest bidders. PINS AND NEEDLES leans into real-life monsters in a wildly clever way.

‘DON’T TELL LARRY’ (2025) The dark and hilarious workplace comedy is in theatres and On Demand today!

level 33 logoDON’T TELL LARRY

After lying to her new eccentric coworker Larry about a company party, an ambitious corporate flunky must deal with the deadly consequences.

Dot-Marie Jones and Ed Begley Jr. serve up pro performances that most certainly elevate DON’T TELL LARRY. Kiel Kennedy has a genuine Will Ferrell energy. His portrayal of Larry is cringe, uncomfortable, and entirely unhinged. It’s wild and wonderful. I won’t say more because seeing is believing. Kennedy gives Larry a larger-than-life persona, mastering the comedy and terror.

Kenneth Mosley is Patrick, Susan’s work bestie and equally fabulous sidekick. Do yourself a favor. Watch Mosley’s reel on IMDB. You will wonder why he isn’t on every screen in your home. His performance as Patrick immediately catches you off guard in the best way. He’s magnetic. Patty Guggenheim is unforgettable as the hyper-ambitious Susan. Guggenheim is a star. She has a similar energy to Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Her comic timing and charisma pull you in. Her chemistry with Mosely makes me want a sequel/spin-off/whatever!

Filmmakers Greg Porper and John Schimke give us a classic, over-the-top workplace comedy that stands alongside titles like OFFICE SPACE. It’s wacky and worth your eyeballs.

‘animal.’ (2025) Eat, meat, repeat. Can a carnivore diet cure all?

H2O stodios logoanimal.

animal.posterAuthor and personal trainer Zane Griggs guides us through an hour-and-a-half argument for a carnivore diet. Often called “The Caveman Diet,” a meat-led way of eating has been all the rage in certain circles for years now. ‘animal.’ features doctors and a select few nutritionists presenting the benefits of consuming a diet contradictory to generations of teaching. Griggs uses testimonials from those who tout the life-changing effects of red meat.

animal. meatThe film feels like one lengthy infomercial with cherry-picked science for effect. There is no mention of pollution and the links to socioeconomics. I’m not arguing the diet is faulty. I would have loved to have seen unbiased medical charts. I’m suggesting that the food chain accessibility should be half of the film. The fact that the only two black individuals interviewed are UK residents, a former bodybuilder, and his health coach daughter, Eddie and Selina Abbew (dad has 4m Instagram followers) is glaring.

The nature footage and scientific recreation transitions are undeniably beautiful. Overall, the editing wavers between sharp and choppy. To make a more concise argument, speakers sometimes appear glitchy rather than inserting a scientific slide to smooth the transition. It’s incredibly distracting. The skulls in the background of each sit-down come off as hokey.

Cells_1 animal. My husband went on a Keto diet in preparation for his half-Ironman competition in 2015. I joined him a few weeks in. On the fourth day, once my body entered ketosis, my body looked entirely different in all the best ways. I was shocked. But remaining on the diet in the real world was incredibly challenging. After a single cheat day, my body fell out of ketosis. I had to restart the process. I became angry, and I was always hungry. It wasn’t a sustainable lifestyle for me.

Field_1 animal. While it is easy to agree with the profit-driven motivation of the pharmaceutical and processed food industries, it’s challenging to accept that my organically grown vegetables are trying to poison me. It comes down to money and US standards. We allow chemicals, pesticides, dyes, and unregulated factory farming that other countries do not. You can taste the difference. The final 20 minutes encourage regenerative farming and environmental care. It’s a great message, even if the film never delves into food-drought areas.

Dr Anthony Chaffee_2 animal.A Keto diet worked wonders for my husband, but that was in an intense training setting. I was able to see immediate physical results, even though it did not end up feeling ideal for me. I’m worried that omitting information curves the film into pseudoscience territory. ‘animal’ has good intentions, but withholding information on the healthiest countries and their varied diets feels skewed. Viewers will have to come to their own conclusions based on the information presented, personal health journey, and availability of resources. If nothing else, ‘animal.’ triggers a broader conversation about nutrition and sustainability.

‘BLEEDING’ (2025) This new take on the vampire genre is addictive.

screambox_logo_image

BLEEDING

Bleeding poster

In a world where infected blood has become the most dangerously addictive opioid, a teen must cross moral lines to save his spiraling cousin and a reluctant acquaintance.

The blood of the infected is harvested and dried into pill form. People are turning into vampires during an overdose and then using others as incubators to feed their needs or sell to the masses. Society has turned its back, deeming the cursed monsters, even airing reality television series in the vein of COPS, showing the brutal deaths of infected individuals.

Bleeding_Still_5Following the overdose death of his brother, Eric’s coping mechanism for his unresolved trauma is breaking and entering to avoid his home life. A visit to his junkie cousin Sean’s house leads to the accidental destruction of a bag of drugs. Now, the boys must devise a plan to find the funds to pay back Sean’s dealer.

After Eric and Sean break into what they assume to be a vacation home, they discover Marcus’s close friend, Sarah, zip-tied in a dark bedroom. Two scumbags are farming her. When Sean needs a fix, he can’t resist her vulnerable neck. Except he’s never had pure blood, and the lure puts him over the edge. Sarah prevents him from turning.

She and Eric strike a deal for survival- He will try to get her across the Canadian border for experimental treatment in exchange for a jar of her blood to pay off Sean’s debt. Sean makes his way to the dealer Dustin’s house alone. Little does he know who he’s dealing with. His ultimate selfishness may be everyone’s undoing.

Bleeding 1Jasper Jones is a pretty boy screw-up. His tough-guy persona leads to stupid decisions. Jones is incredibly watchable. He expertly leans into a character that feels deeply punchable but shows us we’re missing the root cause. Jones delivers the manic behavior of addiction like a pro. It is an impressive turn.

John R. Howley is dazzling as Eric. He takes a wounded bird, combines it with fearless desperation, and demands your attention. It’s unfathomable that this is his first film role. There is a bright and busy future ahead for this young man.

Cinematographer Daniel Cho takes advantage of the ever-changing natural light as the film plays out in relatively real time. BLEEDING will make a perfect companion watch with MY HEART WON’T BLEED UNLESS YOU TELL IT TO. Both films center on complex family relationships and bargaining with death. Filmmaker Andrew Bell creates an endlessly intriguing meditation on cyclical addiction. This new take on the vampire genre is undeniably refreshing. BLEEDING is so dark it may consume you whole.

‘DANGEROUS ANIMALS’ (2025) Shark-obsessed serial killer reels in a fighter.

IFCShudderlogoDANGEROUS ANIMALS

Dangerous Animals poster

Sean Byrne earns an honest-to-goodness “Fuck Yeah,” with the opening of his latest film, DANGEROUS ANIMALS. The plot centers around a shark-obsessed serial killer and the ritualistic murder of tourists. What he doesn’t count on is surfer Zephyr and her survival instincts.

The cinematography is stunning. The score is epic. The soundtrack is perfect. Writer Nick Lepard skillfully navigates tongue-in-cheek jokes, social graces, survival tactics, and one crazy motherfucker. Location is key. Zephyr is trapped.

Dangerous Animals Josh Heuston is Moses. Relentlessly charming and earnest, Moses tries his damnedest to find Zephyr, but his fate may be closer to any of the boy toys in the SCREAM franchise. Heuston is much more than a vapid heartthrob. He is an admirable scene partner, and you want more of him.

Jai Courtney is diabolical. He is equal parts terrifying and mesmerizing. This is Buffalo Bill-style fuckery, and holy shit, does Courtney deserve all the applause and recognition. I would watch prequels centered on Tucker, but only if Courtney reprises the role.

Dangerous Animals Hassie Harrison is a childhood trauma-fueled badass. Harrison commands your attention and takes risks. She could carry any film. She is Final Girl heaven.

DANGEROUS ANIMALS is my actual worst nightmare. I still think a shark will somehow come through a pool drain and eat me. So, obviously, it had me from the get-go. The film is as sadistic as HOSTEL. Think the opening scene of JAWS on steroids. The violence ramps up as the film rolls on, and Zephyr’s escape plans keep us on the hook. DANGEROUS ANIMALS is undeniably one of the year’s most intense films.

‘SUNLIGHT’ (2025) A twisted rom-com you’ll go bananas for!

SUNLIGHT

Sunlight_poster

I became familiar with Nina Conti through Instagram. Her hilarious ventriloquism act has me doubled over with each new clip. She improvises each live show in multiple voices and unpredictable audience member volunteers, and it will blow you away. Monkey is her original creation, and in her directorial debut, SUNLIGHT, Nina uses him as a vessel to mask incredibly dark trauma. The result is emotional brilliance and endless laughter.

SUNLIGHT Shenoah AllenRoy hates his life. He brings some serious childhood baggage, and his job as a radio interviewer sucks the life out of him. As he attempts suicide in a motel room, he catches a glimpse of a life-sized Monkey through his window. As he comes to, Roy finds said Monkey driving his airstream down the empty roads. The audience quickly comes to realize this is not a hallucination but a woman dressed in a costume and putting on a voice.

Sunlight Monkey stretchThe woman in the suit is Jane. She uses Monkey as a coping mechanism to flee her stepfather, and the root of all her sadness. Both Roy and Jane have specific plans that are so outrageous that they agree to accompany one another on their journeys. Roy plans to dig up his abusive cop father and steal the watch he thought he had inherited. Jane wants to find a way to buy a pontoon boat and run banana boat rides as Monkey.

SUNLIGHT launches headfirst into one of the weirdest narratives I’ve ever seen. But simply calling it weird is a disservice to the complexity behind these characters. Conti and Allen co-wrote the story. It is easy to see why Christopher Guest executive produces. This creative pairing perfectly slots in with Guest’s brand of humor. The chemistry between Conti and Allen is instantaneous, even with the added physical barrier of Monkey. These are two pros bouncing weirdness off of each other.

Sunlight Shenoah and NinaShenoah Allen gives Roy a lived-in exhaustion. There is a gentleness that pulls you into his sphere. Conti is phenomenal as she navigates comedy through the suit, but also manages to rip your heart out. She uses humor to convey the hurt. It is a love story between two deeply wounded adults. Allen and Conti do not hold back in the dialogue. They take risks in every beat.

SUNLIGHT is a wonderfully unique road movie that delves into the reality that most of us idle in our loneliness. Finding your people is essential for truly living. Packed with profound revelation and shocking twists and turns, SUNLIGHT is one of the most heartwarming and funniest films ever.

Sunlight Trailer:

A darkly comic love story between a man and a woman who doesn’t want to come out of a monkey suit

Coming To Theaters June 6, 2025

Sunrise Films is excited to announce the U.S. theatrical release of SUNLIGHT, the darkly hilarious and unconventional love story from acclaimed British actress, comedian, and ventriloquist Nina Conti, presented by Christopher Guest. Following its opening at the Edinburgh Film Festival, SUNLIGHT will debut in New York City theaters on June 6, followed by a Los Angeles premiere on June 13. Additional markets are to be announced.

Marking Conti’s feature directorial debut, SUNLIGHT reimagines “Monkey”—the iconic character from her renowned ventriloquist act—as the human-sized alter ego of a woman on the run from a toxic relationship. Conti, who began her career with the Royal Shakespeare Company before becoming an inventive comedy performer, co-wrote, directed, and stars in the film, delivering a bold dual performance as both the woman and the monkey.

Conti stars alongside her longtime creative collaborator Shenoah Allen, who also co-wrote the screenplay. Allen, a Barry Award-winning comedian and one half of the cult comedy duo Pajama Men, plays Roy, a suicidal radio host who becomes Jane’s unlikely companion.

Set against the quirky backdrop of Albuquerque, New Mexico, SUNLIGHT is a road movie with heart, humor, and absurdist flair. Jane (Conti) meets Roy (Allen) at a low point in both their lives. Disguised in a full-body monkey suit and eager to escape her past, Jane hits the road with Roy in his Airstream trailer. As they chase a fresh start—and hatch a risky scheme to fund it—Jane’s possessive ex looms close behind. Equal parts eccentric and emotionally resonant, SUNLIGHT is a natural, inspired extension of Conti’s sell-out stage act.

SUNLIGHT is produced by Sam Parker for Anyway Content, Will Machin for Metro International, Keagan Karnes for Inspirado, Tabitha McDonald and Conti, with Christopher Guest serving as executive producer. Cinematography is by James Kwan, with editing by Riaz Meer, composition by Christoph Bauschinger and music by Radiohead, Aphex Twin & The Pixies.

“We are delighted to bring Nina and Shenoah’s wonderfully funny and charming road trip movie to audiences in the U.S. and Canada,” said Andrew Nerger, Head of U.S. & International Distribution at Sunrise Films. “It’s a laugh-a-minute ride. We fell in love with the film from the very first screening and can’t wait for audiences to meet the mischievous Monkey and the world-weary Roy this summer.”

The U.S. distribution deal was negotiated by Andrew Nerger on behalf of Sunrise Films and Will Machin, CEO of Metro International.

THE RUSE

The Ruse poster

Filmmaker Stefan Mena brings audiences THE RUSE. The film follows an in-home nurse, Dale, and her newly assigned dementia patient. Upon arrival in a remote seaside town, Dale discovers she is replacing the last nurse who mysteriously went missing. Consumed by her patient’s ever-changing lucidity and he-said, she-said of the neighbors, Dale becomes entangled in a chilling whodunit.

The-Ruse-Pic-5As Tom, Michael Steger walks a razor-thin line between a good guy and a total creep. Steger is formidable. Equal parts charming and terrifying, it’s a compelling turn. Genre icon Veronica Cartwright gives Olivia everything she has. The performance is a beautiful balancing act of dementia and regal articulation. She is mesmerizing. Each beat is perfect. Madelyn Dundon plays Dale with a grounded familiarity. She is vulnerable and relatable. Mema puts her through the emotional ringer, and Dundon keeps up like a pro.

the Ruse 2Mena’s score adds to the menacing feeling. The jump scares are legit. Mena executes thoughtfully written relationship-building while skillfully dropping clues to the mystery. Mena plays with small-town gossip, isolation, and a nurse’s instincts. THE RUSE boasts a twist that will f*ck you up. You are not prepared for the final 3rd of this film. This is a story about control. If you think you know where this screenplay is going, think again.

‘THE MOOGAI’ (2025) Jon Bell expands his 2021 short folk horror into a trauma filled feature.

SamuelGoldwynFilmsLogoTHE MOOGAI

The Moogai poster

Filmmaker Jon Bell delivers a horrific manifestation of unresolved cultural trauma in THE MOOGAI. The film opens in 1970. Aboriginal children have been forcibly removed from their families and adopted into white families for decades. Present day, Sarah Bishop eschews her cultural roots. Once a stolen child, a fact she vehemently denies, the difficult birth of her second child comes with collective wounds and folklore she cannot outrun.

moogai 3Barely tolerating her birthmother, Ruth, Sarah’s whitewashed existence comes to a halt when an ancient entity rears its ugly head. Sarah’s aggression heightens as her delusions increase. She quickly spirals out of control in every aspect of her life. Sarah’s husband, Fergus, embraces his culture and does his best to navigate his familial deterioration.

The break between Sarah and her first child, Chloe, is heartbreaking. There’s no denying her resemblance to Fergus has something to do with Sarah’s icy response. The connection between Chloe, Fergus, and Ruth burns Sarah’s limited understanding of her absent culture. Ruth tries her best to protect her family, but Sarah’s relentless resistance to her roots only makes them manifest quicker as lore becomes reality and history repeats itself.

moogai 4Jahdeana Mary brings earnest innocence and hurt to Chloe. You want to hug her. Meyne Wyatt is great playing Fergus. He is charming and protective. He’s a real highlight. Tessa Rose is spectacular as Ruth, giving audiences lived-in knowledge and fear. She is the heart of the film. Shari Sebbens gives Sarah everything from elitism to postpartum depression, unbridled rage to superstitious anxiety. You simultaneously loathe and feel for her. Sebbens is truly a revelation.

The Moogai feature stillPractical FX, makeup, and jump scares are solid. THE MOOGAI keenly delves into medical gaslighting and the pressure on women to “do it all.” While the film is also a creature feature, Jon Bell never shies away from showing viewers that the scariest monsters are humans. It is a surprising cultural reclamation.
