If I Chose the Academy Award Winners and Nominees – 2015 edition
I’ve now seen most of the films that had a release in 2014. This makes me more qualified to vote for the Oscars than 97.548% of the Academy’s membership. With the Oscar ceremony occurring tonight, I’ve picked, as I have the previous two years, who I think the nominees and winners should be in the bulk of the major categories. Once again, the foreign film category will be left off because I simply haven’t had access to enough foreign films to make a comment on them. Those that have made it to my neck of the woods, I will say, have been very good for the most part. Read More →
Oscar Rants, Raves & Predictions on The Reel Big Show
Steven Spielberg May Direct Next ‘Indiana Jones’…Is Chris Pratt Joining Him?
Sounds as if we have a marriage made in Disney heaven. Deadline is reporting that Steven Spielberg (at least his team of people) is potentially interested in directing the fifth installment into the Indiana Jones franchise and he would like to bring Chris Pratt along with him. This news comes mere months after it was reported that Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm were eyeing the Guardians of the Galaxy star as the successor to Harrison Ford’s famous character.
Ford, now 73 years old, has been quite vocal about wanting to return to the franchise for one more go, but if these reports are true, it would appear that the legendary actor was being forced out. This would not come as a surprise to many as the last installment, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, is widely considered an epic failure by fans and critics alike, despite making close to $800 million globally.
We will next see Chris Pratt star in this summers blockbuster Jurassic World, a movie produced by Spielberg, who is said to have selected Pratt to star in the film.
More as it becomes available…keep it here for all your movie news!

Laura Benanti Tapped to Play Supergirl’s Mother
Deadline is reporting that Nashville star Laura Benanti has been cast to play Alura Zor-El, the birth mother of Kara, aka Supergirl (Melissa Benoist). The article provides a short description of the character:
A strong noblewoman, Alura sends Kara to Earth to escape Krypton’s destruction. Her wisdom and guidance echoes across space and time, proving invaluable on Kara’s journey toward becoming Supergirl.
Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Productions, best known for bringing successful DC properties Arrow and The Flash to the CW, are partnering on this Supergirl project for CBS. The project centers around Kara Zor-El (Benoist), who escapes the destruction of Krypton and arrives on Earth where she finds out that she has the same powers as her now famous cousin, Superman. As the years pass, Kara soon learns to harness her powers and use them to become a hero in her own way.
Since the show takes place after the destruction of her home planet, my guess is that we will see Laura Benanti’s appear in some hologram messages sent along with Kara on her escape much in the same vein as Kal-El. Only time will tell though.
No word on the premiere date for the pilot, which was written by Ali Adler and Greg Berlanti, the producers on the show, along with Sarah Schechter and Warner Bros. TV.
Look for Supergirl to appear on the CBS lineup in the coming months

Jared Leto Discusses Playing The Joker in the Upcoming ‘Suicide Squad’ Movie
When the upcoming Suicide Squad cast was announced, one of the most intriguing casting decisions was that of Academy Award winning actor Jared Leto as the Joker. The actor spoke to Billboard this week and opened up about what we can expect from his portrayal.
“The opportunity to take on this nearly Shakespearean character — that’s what graphic novels and comic books are becoming, right?” Leto says.“[He’s] this beautiful disaster of a character — what a big challenge.”
The actor also went on to reveal that he is packing on the pounds for this role, quoted as saying, “I’m trying to gain a lot of weight. It means I have to eat every couple of hours — and I’m terrible at eating a lot.” No word on the direction that Leto will take the character, but the announcement of gaining some weight is an interesting mention. A character most beloved by fans, The Joker will be played by a new actor for the first time since Heath Ledger’s performance in 2008’s The Dark Knight.
The film will shoot from April until September for an August 5, 2016 release.
Zack Snyder Reveals First Look at Jason Momoa as Aquaman!
Zack Snyder pretty much broke the internet today when he decided to reveal the first look at Jason Momoa as Aquaman!
Included with the photo was the following statement and hastag:
There is only one true King. #unitetheseven
Momoa, it has been previously announced, to is set to first appear as The Marine Marvel in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice set to be released on March 25, 2016. He will then star in Justice League Part One in 2017, followed by the solo Aquaman movie in 2018 and, most likely, Justice League Part Two in 2019.
Biggest question here is, what does the tagline “Unite The Seven” refer to? My guess is this is the first of seven posters which will reveal the Justice League, as there are seven on them (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, Green Lantern, and Flash). We will just have to wait and see…
Sound off! What do you think of the look?
New Trailer: ‘Growing Up & Other Lies’ Starring Adam Brody, Wyatt Cenac, Amber Tamblyn & more
After struggling for years as an artist in New York City, Jake is calling it quits and returning home to Ohio. On his last day in the city, he persuades his three oldest friends to help him retrace their greatest adventure together: a walk down the entire length of Manhattan. But their attempt to reclaim the glory of their early 20s doesn’t go quite as planned.
Over the course of the day, buried conflicts emerge as Jake becomes embroiled with his ex-girlfriend and his friends dip into their own crises of manhood. GROWING UP AND OTHER LIES is an anti-coming-of-age comedy.
Written & Directed by | Darren Grodsky and Danny Jacobs (Humboldt County)
Starring | Adam Brody, Wyatt Cenac, Danny Jacobs, Josh Lawson, Amber Tamblyn and Lauren Miller
Run Time | 90 Minutes
Release Date | In theaters and On Demand March 20th
Jeremy’s Review: Michael Johnson’s ‘All the Wilderness’ Reminiscent of David Gordon Green’s Early Work in All the Good Ways
Watching movies is a crap shoot most times, most of the time not knowing what to expect especially from a first time writer-director. So, I love it when a film sneaks up on you and catches you when you least expect it. All the Wilderness is one of those films. With a similar tone and feel as David Gordon Green‘s early good stuff like All the Real Girls and George Washington, this film takes on a post-coming of age story in a fresh and interesting way. Say Whut? A ‘Shaft’ Remake? You Damn Right!
In the “I can’t make this stuff up” file, The Wrap is reporting that yet another reboot of the Shaft franchise is on its way. Today comes word that New Line Cinema has acquired the rights to the Shaft franchise and is partnering with Davis Entertainment’s John Davis, to develop a reboot.
Originally a 1970 novel by Ernest Tidyman, became a household name in the 1970’s with the feature film, directed by Gordon Parks and starring Richard Roundtree in the title role. The film went on to spawn two sequels, Shaft’s Big Score in 1972 and Shaft in Africa in 1973, both of which with met with mixed reactions. CBS picked up the rights and tried their luck at a weekly television show starring Roundtree, but ultimately failed to find it’s audience.
A reboot by director John Singleton and starring Samuel L. Jackson was released in 2000 to modest box office numbers. A film that wasn’t bad, but didn’t perform well enough for future installments.
No word on casting at this time, but safe bet that Idris Elba will be on someone’s speed dial.
Netflix’s ‘Richie Rich’ Trailer is Here

By putting on the Gear VR headset, consumers are immersed in the role of “Divergent” members of society who have been captured by Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet) and her Erudite faction and are subjected to a series of mental ”simulations” in order to determine the full extent of their divergence. As the VR technology simulates Jeanine and her faction cohorts testing them with experimental serums, they experience two distinct, intensely gripping and realistic fearscapes, transporting them from the frightening heights of a crumbling Chicago skyscraper to the intimidating challenge of a massive, fast-approaching locomotive.
Created by virtual reality innovators Kite & Lightning with assistance from the film’s VFX team, the experience was built using stereoscopic 4K video of the actors, with effects and environment built in Unreal Engine 4 and then rendered into an immersive 3D/360° experience. It was scored by The Divergent Series: Insurgent composer Joe Trapanese.
The Divergent Series: Insurgent, the second installment of the blockbuster Divergent franchise, will be released in theaters worldwide on March 20. The first Divergent film grossed nearly $300 million at the global box office, and the Divergent trilogy has sold more than 30 million books around the world.
Neill Blomkamp is Officially Directing the Next ‘Alien’ Sequel!
Neill Blomkamp sparked a nerdgasm last month when he posted some unofficial concept art for his vision of a new chapter in 20th Century Fox’s Alien franchise, but nothing as to the excitement that comes today as the District 9 director posted to his Instagram page that he would indeed be directing the next installment of the Alien saga.
20th Century Fox has since confirmed the news, and announced that it is, indeed, a sequel to the original Alien franchise and not the Prometheus sequel which is slated for a March 4, 2016 release.
As of press, no word on if Signourney Weaver will be returning to the franchise…but we can hope.
