Deadline has some exciting news for all of you who were mesmerized last week by the stunning concept trailer for The Leviathan by director Ruairí Robinson. Writer/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) will produce the project along with writer/director Neill Blomkamp (Chappie) who will serve as executive producer!

The director took to twitter today to share the news:

With two powerful allies like Kinberg and Blomkamp, the likelihood of this project finding a studio to back the project just got a real shot in the arm. The trailer hit nearly 2 million views across Vimeo and YouTube last week and fan reaction has been positive, building a fanbase around the concept was a genius move for Robinson. Oh, and how could I forget, Jim Uhls (Fight Club) has already penned the screenplay!

Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Alien’ to Rewrite the Franchise

Director Neill Blomkamp wants you to forget that Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection ever happened…literally. The director broke the internet last week when he announced he was making the next installment of the Alien franchise and that actress Sigourney Weaver was planning to reprise her role as Ellen Ripley, but Sky Movies spoke with the duo while both are promoting their new film Chappie and this is what the director had to say:

“I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of ‘Alien,’” says the director.“So it’s ‘Alien,’ ‘Aliens’ and then this movie.”

Weaver went on to say this new film will give Ripley “A proper ending.”

Considering much of the concept art that surface a few months back, the new film will see the return of some familiar faces as Michael Biehn’s Corporal Dwayne Hicks is featured, but there is no confirmation that the gritty actor will return to reprise his role. Now, the director mentions there’s a three-decade age gap between Aliens and the new film, so there are questions as to whether this new chapter continues directly after the events of the 1986 film, but one things for certain, Blomkamp has the passion for this project to make Alien fans extremely happy.

Neill Blomkamp is Officially Directing the Next ‘Alien’ Sequel!

alien-iso-main Neill Blomkamp sparked a nerdgasm last month when he posted some unofficial concept art for his vision of a new chapter in 20th Century Fox’s Alien franchise, but nothing as to the excitement that comes today as the District 9 director posted to his Instagram page that he would indeed be directing the next installment of the Alien saga.

20th Century Fox has since confirmed the news, and announced that it is, indeed, a sequel to the original Alien franchise and not the Prometheus sequel which is slated for a March 4, 2016 release.

As of press, no word on if Signourney Weaver will be returning to the franchise…but we can hope.
