Review: Andrew Hinton & Johnny Burke’s Doc ‘Tashi and the Monk’ Pulls the Heartstrings in All the Right Ways

tashi - posterHBO has been in the documentary game for as long as I can remember. They’ve been bringing quality stories about a wide spectrum of subjects and people and tonight it premieres the new documentary short Tashi and the Monk, which is no less interesting than the great bulk of what they show.

tashi - monk and girl

After deciding to end his tenure as a Buddhist monk working in the United States, Lobsang Phutsok felt compelled to return to his native Nepal to help children in need, those who had no options. Upon his return he started Jhamtse Gatsal, what amounts to a commune where at risk children were not just taken in to be cared for but essentially adopted by Lobsang. Parents/grandparents/family members had to relinquish rights to the children in order for him to take them in, where he would he there proxy father. There, they would be fed, educated and prepared for a life bigger than any they could expect from their circumstances otherwise by the monk and his incredibly dedicated staff.

tashi - girl herself

The force that carries us through the film really is the titular Tashi Drolma, a troubled 5-year old girl whose mother had just died and whose alcoholic father can’t or won’t take care of her. She is the youngest of the children at Jhamtse Gatsal and is a willful young girl who starts out as a troublemaker. However, we witness her journey over the period of filming into a more integrated and happy young girl who makes friends and is taken under the wing of one of the older children there. She is the embodiment of all the good that occurs under Lobsang and the staff’s guidance.

tashi - kids

Try as he may, Lobsang isn’t able to take in all of the children that he’d like to or that need to. He heeds the advice of his overworked staff that should they take on more children, the ones currently in their care would not get what they need. This is a delicate balancing act and one that can have heartbreaking consequences, which are shown with as much compassion as any film can. These choices take their toll on Lobsang, but he never loses sight of the mission of Jhamtse Gatsal.

This is an incredibly uplifting film and one the shines a light on some really wonderful and amazing people. Beautifully filmed, capturing the beautiful scenery of Nepal and the Himalayas,it will tug on your heartstrings, but you’ll come out better for it. I promise.

This film premieres tonight on HBO at 8:00 EST. Be sure to check this one out.

U2 and HBO Announce Documentary and Live Concert Coming in November!

U2

U2 and HBO will debut a unique combination of two exclusive world premiere specials this fall, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. First, to debut November 7th, a behind-the-scenes documentary offers unprecedented access to the band and the team that worked with them to conceptualize and create its current iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE world tour. The following week, the network will present the tour’s November 14th performance, shot at the newly renovated Bercy Arena in Paris and aired exclusively on HBO that same day. Both the documentary and the concert will be available on HBO GO and HBO NOW simultaneous to the programs’ world premieres on HBO. But if you’re into other music genres, you can still search for upcoming concerts near me.

“U2 continues to take risks, which has made them one of the most consistently exciting forces in rock’n’roll,” said Lombardo. “The one-two combination of this documentary special, followed by the concert, will provide viewers with the ultimate look at this remarkable band behind the scenes and on the stage.”

The documentary takes a look into the creation of U2’s wildly innovative and widely acclaimed iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE world tour, which began May 14 in Vancouver and currently runs through November. The special will detail how a show of this magnitude is conceived, revealing the blood, sweat and imagination that have gone into making iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE, the tour that would ultimately “reinvent the arena show,” according to Rolling Stone’s opening-night review.

u2_01_SamJones

Interviews in the documentary include all four members of U2 – Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. – as well as the supporting cast of Willie Williams, who has created tour concepts for the band for more than 30 years, award-winning designer Es Devlin, newly signed on for this tour, production director Jake Berry, audio director Joe O’Herlihy, executive director Gavin Friday, set designer Ric Lipson and others who bring iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE to life around U2’s music, night after night.

The special also explores the challenges and setbacks U2 faced in the months before tour rehearsals began in April, including Bono’s serious bicycle accident in New York last fall, and his — and the band’s — hard road getting back into “fighting shape” for their triumphant return with iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE. This exclusive documentary chronicles in detail how these same four friends, who started out as a humble punk band from the Northside of Dublin more than 30 years ago, continue to create magic nightly with the most grandiose, yet most intimate, arena tour ever staged.

On Nov. 14, the audience will see for itself the results of all of that hard work when U2 plays the Bercy Arena in Paris on the iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE tour, showcasing the inventive set that allows U2 to explore the concepts of iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE via a performance that literally moves throughout the venue via multiple stages, a one-of-a-kind interactive floor-to-ceiling arena-length LED screen that has earned its reputation as the fifth member of U2 on this run, and a radical new approach to surround sound that ensures everyone in the audience sees, feels and hears the show with maximum impact from every seat in the house.

u2_02_SamJones

And of course, there are the songs: The iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE setlists span the band’s entire career, from its 1980 debut album, “Boy,” to its most recent effort, “Songs of Innocence.” The concepts of innocence and experience are explored in vivid musical and visual detail, progressing from songs inspired by the members of U2’s earliest influences and formative life experiences through decades’ worth of indelible anthems from the band that has won more Grammys than any other living rock band.

The documentary will be produced and directed by Davis Guggenheim (the Oscar®-winning “An Inconvenient Truth,” plus “Waiting for Superman,” “It Might Get Loud,” featuring U2’s The Edge, and “From the Sky Down,” the 2011 documentary chronicling the recording and release of U2’s 1991 classic “Achtung Baby”) and produced by Shannon Dill, with U2 manager Guy Oseary serving as executive producer.

The concert will be produced by Done And Dusted with executive producers Hamish Hamilton, Simon Pizey, Davis Guggenheim and Guy Oseary. It will be directed by Hamish Hamilton, who has worked with the band since 2001, including such collaborations as “Elevation: Live from Boston,” “U2 Go Home: Live from Slane Castle,” the “Beautiful Day” documentary, and “Vertigo in 2005: Live from Chicago.” The youngest recipient of the BAFTA Special Award, Hamilton has directed and executive produced the London 2012 Olympic and ParaOlympic opening and closing ceremonies, and directed the last six Super Bowl halftime shows, multiple Academy Awards® ceremonies, the “Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show” for more than a decade, President Obama’s inaugural ball, MTV’s VMAs and many more.

If you don’t have HBO, but do have a facebook, you can now watch the debut episodes of Ballers and The Brink via these links:

Ballers: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10153597196099384

The Brink: https://www.facebook.com/TheBrinkHBO/videos/917793438276821/

Both have intros by the actors.

I saw The Brink and thought it was basically like VEEP, only with more characters. I haven’t seen Ballers yet. Did you see? What did you think?

In addition to Facebook, the episodes are also available on HBO NOW and HBO GO. Consumers new to HBO NOW can sign up now for a free 30 day trial that includes access to the best past and current programing. The marketing team reported that the facebook likes from TheMarketingHeaven.com really helped them in propelling the show and bringing them onto the frontlines.

Created by Stephen Levinson (HBO’s Entourage®) and executive produced by Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Peter Berg, Evan Reilly, Rob Weiss, Julian Farino and Denis Biggs, Ballers explores the whirlwind lifestyle and real-life problems of a group of former and current football players and was graded an “A-”  byEntertainment Weekly. In the series Johnson (San Andreas) portrays Spencer, a retired football superstar who is trying to reinvent himself as a financial manager for current players in sun soaked Miami.

The epic dark comedy series The Brink focuses on a geopolitical crisis and its effect on three disparate, desperate men: Secretary of State Walter Larson (Tim Robbins, Best Supporting Actor Oscar® winner for Mystic River), lowly Foreign Service officer Alex Talbot (Jack Black, Golden Globe nominee for “Bernie”) and ace Navy fighter pilot Zeke Tilson(Pablo Schreiber, HBO’s The Wire®).  The series was executive produced by Jerry Weintraub, Roberto Benabib and Jay Roach, who also directed the pilot, and was created by Roberto Benabib and Kim Benabib.

Jeremy’s Review: Alex Gibney’s ‘Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief’ Is a Scary and Spot-On Adaptation of Lawrence Wright’s Book

going clear posterHaving read Lawrence Wright‘s bestseller Going Clear before seeing Alex Gibney‘s documentary adaptation, I was well-versed in much of what this film covers with regards to the “Church” of Scientology. The book is dense with the craziest shit about founder L. Ron Hubbard and the operation of his religion and the zealots that surrounded him and took over after his death in 1986. The book focused heavily on the journey of Oscar winning screenwriter-director Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby, Casino Royale) through the ranks of the church as he attempted to go “up the bridge” to the highest levels, covering nearly 35 years. His resignation letter hit like a ton of bricks and really brought to light many grievances that had been trickling out from ex-church members without much in the way of corroboration since the church had so far been able to silence those who left through extreme intimidation tactics. Even armed with all of this knowledge, seeing this story play out on screen did nothing more than seal my perception that Scientology is a bigoted, dangerous enslaving cult.

going clear - la office

Gibney’‘s film is incredibly well-crafted like the rest of his films. He fleshes out Wright‘s story by bringing a long list of extremely high ranking former – Scientologists, among them are Haggis, former Executive Director of the Office of Special Affairs Mike Rinder, former Inspector General of the Religious Technology Center Marty Rathbun, former SeaOrg executive Tom Devocht, handler for John Travolta, Spanky Taylor and actor Jason Beghe (check out his video describing his life in Scientology). Wright also appears filling in gaps. This is a veritable who’s who of ex-Scientologists and each of their stories are incredibly compelling and really sad in so many ways. Many of them spent decades in the church and you can see the pain it has caused them and still causing them as they are routinely harassed by members of the church and private investigators that are hired by the church.

Funny enough, the film doesn’t concentrate a ton of time on L. Ron Hubbard himself. Sure, there is enough to give us a working knowledge of who he was and the evolution of his ideas into what later became Scientology.  Of course Hubbard (who famously said, “You wanta make real money, you gotta start a religion”) and his legacy are never far away, but the main focus of the film is what happened with the church after he died and the direction it took under its new leader, David Miscavige. Miscavige is portrayed as a paranoiac who has gone to extreme measures to consolidate his power, doling out abuse in any way to keep his detractors, both real and perceived, in check. The people listed above corroborate these charges, they being the very reasons they left.

going clear - lrh

We get our requisite time on Tom Cruise‘s transition into the poster boy for the church and his special relationship with Miscavige, although the book goes into far more detail about how abusive Miscavige is even to someone like Cruise. His rise and the church’s win in the battle with the IRS over getting tax exemption status and the absurd way that they ended up getting it, really opened the flood gates of money and the church’s ability to snap up real estate all over the world adding to their coffers. But the more steam the church gained, the more Miscavige flew into rage and pushed out those who were closest to him.

going clear - miscavige

This is a powerful story and one that is quite scary. The vigor that the members of the church, and I do use that term as loosely as one can, protect their beliefs is undying. If someone they know leaves the church, they completely disconnect from them and never talk to them again. They dedicate their lives, and some even sign a billion year contact with them, to the messages of Hubbard. They are fanatical in ways that echo the followers of Jim Jones, but go far beyond sans the suicide. The words of the former Scientologists are harrowing and Gibney does a great job of illustrating what they go through after leaving and why the followers of this “religion” are as cult-like as you’ll find (here’s a good example).

US actor, Tom Cruise smiles during the i

There will be blow back from this film, but it’s good to know that HBO lawyered up from the outset of making this movie in anticipation of Scientology trying in their typical fashion of shutting anything down that is critical of their beliefs. Gibney and company pull back the curtain and really expose Scientology for what it is – a quack religion that is built on the money of the members who sacrifice literally everything they have for the church. The active members are, by all intents and purposes, enslaved both physically and mentally and in a Hotel California kind of way – you can check out, but you can never leave. Like so many documentaries of late, this film plays out more like a thriller than a non-fiction film telling a story, which engages the viewer even more than the fascinating story unfolding over the two hour running time. The church likens itself to a humanitarian effort, that it is doing the work that no one else will or can, but the words of people like Mike Rinder and Marty Rathbun quickly counter that notion. The charges in the film might be unbelievable without the cast of former members to flesh it all out, but due to the sheer absurdity of the beliefs of this particular cult, I can’t say that’s really the case. I think the most shocking things are that they were able to coerce the government into giving them tax exemption and that they get away with the culture of degradation and violence that appears to be rampant and unchecked.

This is an absolute must see film this year. I give HBO and Alex Gibney all the credit in the world for tackling this subject knowing there was going to be legal wranglings from the very beginning of its production. In addition, I urge you to read Lawrence’s book. It is able to give far greater detail about much of what is covered in the film.I dare you not to be intrigued.

casual-vacancy

HBO has revealed the new trailer for the HBO Miniseries/BBC adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s best selling novel “The Casual Vacancy.” The show will be broken into three parts with parts one and two scheduled to debut back-to-back on Wednesday, April 29 (8:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT), followed by the debut of part three the next night, Thursday, April 30 (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET/PT).

When Parish Councilman Barry Fairbrother unexpectedly dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock. An English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, Pagford is not what it first seems. What lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war – rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest battle the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

The cast includes Michael Gambon, Keeley Hawes, Rory Kinnear, Monica Dolan, Julia McKenzie, and Abigail Lawrie.

The three part miniseries is directed by Jonny Campbell and written for the screen by Sarah Phelps. Neil Blair, Paul Trijbits and Rick Senat serve as executive producers.
