Learn about Pixar movie magic for FREE with Pixar in a Box from Khan Academy

pixar in a box

Pixar in a Box – a new online resource that explores the academic concepts behind Pixar Animation Studios’ creative process – goes live on KhanAcademy.org. Through a series of video lessons, interactive exercises, and hands-on activities, students will discover how the academic concepts they learn in school enable Pixar filmmakers to create new worlds, animate unique characters and tell stories through animation. Although designed especially for students in middle and high school, these resources are available to learners of all ages, completely free of charge.

“Our mission at Khan Academy is a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere,” said Sal Khan, Founder and CEO of the not-for-profit Khan Academy. “Sparking student interest in math and other academic fields is a key part of that, and we’re delighted to collaborate with Pixar to achieve this goal. Pixar in a Box gives students a new way to engage with key academic concepts and see how creative these concepts can be.”

pixar in a box 1“Learning makes us beginners again,” said Ed Catmull, President of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios.  “In my experience, creativity involves missteps and imperfections, which is one more reason it is important for every one of us to keep learning – in order to remain flexible and keep our brains nimble.   By working with Khan Academy on Pixar in a Box, we hope to encourage the excitement of learning and creative thinking for middle and high school students and to provide the tools to do it.”

“For years, we’ve heard from teachers at every grade level interested in creating animation-based curricula,” said Elyse Klaidman, Director, Pixar University and Archives.  “We’ve wanted to provide free online resources for them, and Pixar in a Box makes that dream a reality. We hope that it not only gives students a behind-the-scenes look at how our movies are made but also gets them excited about STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) concepts.”

Khan and Catmull officially unveiled Pixar in a Box at a special event yesterday evening on the Pixar campus in Emeryville, CA. After an introduction from Klaidman, local educators learned the story behind the project and then received a live demonstration of Pixar in a Box from two of its creators – Brit Cruise, Content Producer at Khan Academy, and Tony DeRose, Senior Scientist and Research Group Lead at Pixar. The evening concluded with a question-and-answer session moderated by Klaidman.

pixar in a box 2“Many students start to lose interest in academics in middle and high school, partly because they don’t see how academic concepts relate to things they care about,” said DeRose. “Pixar in a Box aims to address this disconnect by showing how Pixar filmmakers use these concepts for creative benefit in their everyday work.”

Starting today, students can access Pixar in a Box and learn:

  • How combinatorics are used to create crowds, like the swarm of robots in WALL-E.
  • How parabolas are used to model environments, like the forest in Brave.
  • How weighted averages are used to create characters, like Buzz Lightyear and Woody.
  • How linear and cubic interpolation are used to animate characters.
  • How trigonometry is used to create the worlds in which Pixar stories take place.
  • How simultaneous equations are used to paint all of Pixar’s images.

“These lessons are the first phase of the project,” said Cruise. “While the first year focuses on math, future Pixar in a Box lessons will explore science, computer science, arts, and humanities.”

All Pixar in a Box resources are available free of charge at PixarInABox.org. The site will be updated as additional lessons become available.

Dot & Bo Hearts Wes Anderson and so do we.

Collecting antique furniture is considered as one of the most expensive hobbies that people can get into because of the high price tags. Given this, it is then important for antique collectors to take the necessary steps that can help them maintain and protect their investments. Among these steps, some of the most important include knowing how to clean and handle antique furniture. However, knowing how to clean and handle antique furniture is not only limited to gaining information on the steps collectors can take to keep their furniture dirt or scratch free. This is because it also involves understanding the factors that cause damage to antique furniture and understanding how they can avoid making their antique furniture vulnerable to damage.

There are a number of risk factors that can cause damage to antique furniture, and collectors need to know about them so they can take the necessary precautions to help them avoid the damage these factors can bring to their collections. One of these includes fluctuations in relative humidity, which means that antique furniture is constantly exposed to changes in weather and temperatures. This can be dangerous for antique furniture because the constant expansion and shrinking of antique furniture as a result of temperature changes can cause cracking and splitting. To prevent such damage, collectors can use a humidifier or they should try to maintain a constant room temperature where they place their collections. You can shop europeans antiques online to furnished your home.

Another factor is sunlight exposure, which can significantly alter the color of the finish of antique furniture. Collectors can prevent such damage by removing their antique furniture from places where there is direct sunlight or by using UV filters on their windows. Another factor that can cause damage to antique furniture is insect infestation, which includes termites which in case you have we recommend to visit https://www.pestcontrolexperts.com/local/missouri/. To remedy this problem, collectors need to get outside help, as the only effective solution to this is fumigation. Other factors include the way antiques are handled, the kind of cleaning material and chemical used and on the foreign material that may stain antique furniture such as from liquids.

Given that collecting antique furniture can be expensive. Collectors need to take the necessary steps that can help them preserve the value of their collections. However, doing so does not only involve knowing how to clean or remove scratches on antique furniture. This is because it also involves knowing and understanding the risk factors that can cause damage to antique furniture and also knowing how to prevent exposing their antique furniture to such risk factors.

It is quite easy to determine the antiques provenance and condition, but when it comes to rarity and quality are quite hard for even the most cunning minds out there. I do not mean that for a novice antique hunter this is impossible. But I am saying that it is more time consumable. In order to get those two demands in line you need lot and lots of research and maybe even expert help advice. Needless to say that I forgot patina, color and finish as a secondary criteria for determining the antiques furniture value. As you can se many factors can make your antique priced more or even less that you might have thought. Keep in mind on suggestions such as: – vigorous carving on a piece of American Chippendale antique furniture generally increases its value – keep in mind that more ornate design need more handwork, thus increasing its value as well – delicate additions and fancy framework gives also some edge when it comes to price – size is not always advantage, if antique furniture is too big than it loses desirability a so on.

When trying to find valuable antique furniture think also on its usability not just beauty that is my advice to bring with you when going to antique hunting. Most information on antiques you can get from the specialized forums and discussion board or even few good sites. Bear in mind that experience wise you can always use some additional help from an antique expert. And when looking for a unique antique item like an antique barometer, you can visit a reliable place similar to antiques.co.uk/antique/antique-barometer–1 to learn more!

The Grand Storyteller of Design

Dive into your imagination and be inspired by some of Hollywood’s most creative films. Fill your interiors with tangling family histories, stop-motion animation, and woodland animals who speak and even cuss. Hide secrets (like a marriage in Jamaica) in weathered metal drawers, and introduce the sweet pastel color palette of a grand hotel and its neighboring bakery with soft glowing lamps and muted armchairs which have the best covers from the sequin tablecloth wholesale so they look amazing all the time. At an antique desk, write out letters to your young love, planning an elaborate runaway scheme, or seek vengeance on the creature who ate your best friend with a miniature submarine. Then, ignoring a newly developed crush on a school teacher, pack your trunks for a trip to India with your brothers instead. Daring to view your home from a director’s lens, let fantastical scenarios and fictional imagery lead you to designs that stand out from the rest.

Touring Avatar Exhibit Coming Fall 2016

Global Experience Specialists - Avatar Artwork

Experience Specialists, Inc. (GES) announced today a partnership with Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products to develop and tour an exhibition based on James Cameron’s Avatar. The state-of-the-art global touring exhibition, which will kick off in the fall of 2016, is inspired by the amazing creatures and environments of the world of Pandora first introduced in the record-breaking film. Fox and GES are developing the interactive attraction in consultation with James Cameron and Jon Landau’s Lightstorm Entertainment.

“This unprecedented global exhibition will create a truly memorable experience for fans,” said Jeffrey Godsick, president of Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products. “Bringing the world of Pandora to life and comparing it to the wonders of our own planet, the AVATAR exhibition will bring together immersive new storytelling and science in a tangible, engaging forum.”

“We have been longtime fans of James Cameron’s visionary work and this is a unique opportunity to showcase AVATAR to fans around the world,” said Eddie Newquist, chief creative officer and executive vice president of GES. “We are thrilled to be able to provide visitors the opportunity to learn more about the wonders of Pandora through this exhibition.”

“The world of AVATAR, made possible by James Cameron’s vision and ingenious technological advancements, fits perfectly with GES’ philosophy of storytelling through art and science,” said Steve Moster, president of GES and president and CEO of Viad. “We couldn’t be more excited to present Cameron’s world of Pandora to film fans, school groups and families around the world.”

“As we expand the AVATAR story world, we look for compelling ways to connect with our current – and future – fans. This exhibition is an ideal way to share new and exciting insights into life on Pandora that we hope will inspire guests during their visit and beyond,” added Kathy Franklin, president of franchise development for Lightstorm Entertainment.

The Avatar exhibition will include immersive, interactive displays that highlight Pandora, the alien world created by James Cameron, putting it in the context of science here on Earth. The exhibition will treat Pandora as a real place that can be studied and visited. The 10,000 square foot experience will allow for a dynamic 45-minute guest engagement offering a wide range of exciting explorations and captivating environments highlighting bioluminescence, connectivity among Pandora’s living things as well as its incredible and diverse flora and fauna. A unique look at the complexity of indigenous peoples and cultures through the lens of the Na’vi, Pandora’s native inhabitants, will be a key component of the exhibition. By showcasing the science and wonder of Pandora, the exhibition will allow guests to better understand the beauty – and fragility – of our own planet Earth.

Highlights of the 10,000-square-foot exhibition include:

  • An examination of the Alpha Centauri system, home to the fictional planet Polyphemus and its moon Pandora, that offers visitors a multimedia journey into the world’s discovery and the challenges of space travel to reach it from Earth.
  • A Bioluminescent Theater, where visitors experience a recreation of Pandora at night and learn about its beauty, danger and the connections among the many organisms that inhabit the moon.
  • An Amplified Mobility Platform suit for guests to step inside to experience the challenge of surviving on Pandora as a human.
  • Na’vi culture depicted through careful reproductions to provide an in-depth look at these humanoid inhabitants and how their clans have created unique ways of connecting with nature.
  • More than a dozen hands-on interactive components that will appeal to everyone from the most avid fan to newcomers to this compelling world.

GES, producer of blockbuster touring-themed attractions and world-class live events across the globe, will design, produce and tour the Avatar exhibition to multiple global markets to be announced at a later date.

Released in 2009, James Cameron’s Avatar is the highest-grossing film in motion picture history, with a box office gross of nearly $2.8 billion. Mesmerizing all ages across the globe with its otherworldly visuals and groundbreaking special effects, the film quickly became a worldwide phenomenon so popular it will be followed by three sequels, with the first sequel due for release in late 2017. Avatar was named best drama at the Golden Globes and won Academy Awards for cinematography, visual effects and art direction.
