As I’m watching the new trailer for Morgan, I get deja vu. Oh, a group of scientists engineers a human, well, a female human. I think I’ve seen this before. I found two other trailers that are strikingly similar. You be the judge. I am looking forward to this movie. Yeah, it’s the same story, but sometimes, how it’s told makes all the difference.
Splice – I really liked this, but perhaps Adrian Brody had a lot to do with it. He’s just great in everything.
Species – Ok, so this is REALLY cheesy, but hey, it was the 90s.
Morgan – Terrible title. There’s nothing to give an indication of the plot.

Family films rarely get much bigger than The BFG, based on the novel of the same name by Roald Dahl and directed by Steven Spielberg. The story of an orphan girl who befriends a giant and accompanies him on the adventure of a lifetime is heartwarming and family friendly with an amazing cast lead by Oscar winner Mark Rylance and newcomer Ruby Barnhill. Come on a journey into giant country and experience the wonder of The BFG.

Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) is a young orphan girl in London who longs for adventure. Telling the story of frightful things lurking in the shadows of the night, she encounters her own in the form of a massive giant who takes young Sophie from her bed and races back to his home in giant country. Initially afraid of what’s to come, she is introduced to her captor, The BFG (Mark Rylance), an endearingly dim-witted giant with enormous ears and a keen sense of smell. The BFG, or Big Friendly Giant, is nothing like the other inhabitants of giant country you see. He keeps to himself and fancies to feed himself snozzcumber and frobscottle as opposed to his giant brethren Bloodbottler (Bill Hader) and Fleshlumpeater (Jemaine Clement) who prefer to eat humans.

The BFG spends most of his time in dream country where he collects dreams and then takes them to children all around the country, teaching Sophie all about the magic and mystery of dreams. Everything is wonderful between the two new best friends until Sophie’s presence is detected by the other giants, putting her in danger. Sophie and the BFG must head to London to convince Queen Victoria (Penelope Wilton) to help with the impending giant attacks, but they must first convince the Queen and her maid, Mary (Rebecca Hall), that giants do indeed exist. Together, they must all come up with a plan to get rid of the giants once and for all.

Legendary director Steve Spielberg does not disappoint with his creation of this wonderful Roald Dahl classic. This is a rare film when visuals take a back seat to performance. Mark Rylance is outstanding as the BFG and you truly immerse yourself into his performance that you forget he is a CGI giant. Ruby Barnhill is wonderfully feisty and a true joy to watch. The two of them have a chemistry that works right from moment one. The visuals are spectacular and should be applauded. They subtly blend into the outstanding storytelling and lend the perfect mix to this awe inspiring film.
Overall, The BFG is this summers perfect family film and should not be missed!

Summer is here and what better way to enjoy it than to eat some popcorn and engross yourself with a cheesy shark attack movie!…except The Shallows isn’t that movie. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Run All Night) and starring Blake Lively, The Shallows is a B-movie snooze fest with impressive cinematography and a few jumps but very little else.
Medical student Nancy Adams (Blake Lively) is on the search for a secluded beach once visited by her late mother after finding out she was pregnant with Nancy many years before. Nancy finds a local named Carlos (Óscar Jaenada), who is familiar with the beach and agrees to take her to her destination. Upon her arrival, Nancy meets a couple of young surfers and the three spend the afternoon surfing and enjoying the beautiful surroundings, something Nancy desperately needed. Since taking a break from medical school, Nancy has traveled the world in search of the answer to her future, but her sister Chloe (Sedona Legge) and father (Brett Cullen) are worried about where her journey might take her.

As the sunset arrives, the young surfers head in, but Nancy is determined to catch one more wave. Nancy notices something very strange out beyond the break and begins to worry that she is within the grasp of danger. As Nancy decides to turn in, she is attacked by a shark and marooned on an isolated rock sticking out of the lagoon several hundred yards from shore. Determined to survive her predicament, Nancy must face the reality that she is alone, injured and without many options, but she must find a way to get to get to shore.

The Shallows works to build the tension of a normal shark attack film, but the reality is, it’s not that interesting. Shark movies thrive on suspense, ala Open Water or Jaws, preying on our fear of the unknown ocean and its creatures, which this film attempts to achieve, but it winds up trying to emulate the latter Jaws films where shock trumps originality. Blake Lively does her best to provide an ample amount of emotion to sell the impending doom, but you spend most of the time feeling that we’ve “been there, done that” and there’s nothing truly special connecting you to her character. Also, the ending that we’re sold as being as a “twist” ends up being nothing more than goofy and far fetched that you can’t help but laugh.
Overall, The Shallows could be nothing or exactly what you thought it would be; either way, it’s not worth the price of admission.

PRESENTS
SEATTLE ROAD
Sometimes a film divides an audience right down the middle. Something so unique and deep that it either inspires a deluge of praise or a tirade of… well, let’s say “unkind words.” Writer/Producer/Director Ryan David‘s “relationship meets art” love story, Seattle Road has a great tagline:
|
Now that’s a film I can get behind. It sounds intriguing, with loads of potential. Unfortunately, for me, the tagline was far more clever than the film itself. If you’re going to tout a film with the word paradox, frankly I’m going to expect something wildly fantastic. What I got was some sort of millennial truth-telling, ridiculousness. Seattle Road bears resemblance to a student film with dialogue that is some of the most pretentious and eye roll inducing I’ve heard in a while. The heightened audio smacks just as false, combined with the disjointed time jumps. The film comes off as trying too hard rather than genuine. Julia Voth‘s portrayal of Eve is fickle and unlikable at every angle. I felt not a single ounce of empathy for the fact that her estranged father had passed away, or cared that she was shacking up with a guy she hardly knows in a house that doesn’t actually belong to her, all while crying “woe is me” and bitching about her self-importance. The ending literally caused me to say, “Are you kidding me?” at the screen.
The only saving graces for Seattle Road lies in three things: Moments in editing, the music, and our leading man, Maximillian Roeg. Even with the editing being a point a contention for me, there are moments in the film that might as well be mini music videos from the late 80’s to the early 90’s. These are, without a doubt, the most visually interesting, only enhanced by the Music Supervision of Tracy McKnight. Great soundtrack. Finally, our Adam. Roeg is a strong presence in his timidity. As a commune raised artist trying to navigate a seemingly doomed relationship with his own personal demons, he has a quiet strength and I am very much looking forward to seeing him in future projects. If nothing else comes from Seattle Road, please let it be a platform for Maximillian Roeg to shine.
I do appreciate what Seattle Road was trying to do. It’s not a boring film by any means. It went out on a limb and tried something different. For me, the limb was awkward and weak. If you’re intrigued or feel the need to be contrarian, I invite you to watch Seattle Road this week and let me know what you think. For all I know, you may love it.

I’m super stoked for this. Sarah Polley, writer/director of one of my favorite films of 2011, Take This Waltz (go watch now on Netflix & Hulu) is writing and producing and Mary Harron, yes, American Psycho director, will direct this mini-series from the novel by Margaret Atwood. Woman, woman, WOMAN.
Halfire Entertainment, CBC and Netflix announced that production will begin on Alias Grace, a six-hour miniseries inspired by the historical true story of convicted murderer Grace Marks and based on the award-winning novel by Margaret Atwood. The miniseries is being written and produced by Sarah Polley (Looking for Alaska, Take this Waltz, Away from Her) and will be directed by Mary Harron (American Psycho, I Shot Andy Warhol), with production scheduled to begin in Ontario in August 2016. Alias Grace will be broadcast in Canada on CBC and will stream everywhere globally on Netflix.
The story of Alias Grace follows Grace Marks, a poor, young Irish immigrant and domestic servant in Upper Canada who, along with stable hand James McDermott, was convicted of the brutal murders of their employer, Thomas Kinnear, and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery, in 1843. James was hanged while Grace was sentenced to life imprisonment. Grace became one of the most enigmatic and notorious women of 1840s Canada for her supposed role in the sensational double murder, and was eventually exonerated after 30 years in jail. Her conviction was controversial, and sparked much debate about whether Grace was actually involved in the murder, or merely an unwitting accessory.
“Sarah Polley wrote a stunning six-hour script, based on Margaret Atwood’s award-winning novel, and we are thrilled that CBC and Netflix have joined forces to co-commission this miniseries,” said Noreen Halpern, President of Halfire Entertainment.
“I first read Alias Grace when I was 17 years old and throughout the last 20 years I have read it over and over, trying to get to the bottom of it,” said Polley. “Grace Marks, as captured by Margaret Atwood, is the most complex, riveting character I have ever read. I’m thrilled that Mary Harron has taken the project on. I know that her ability to create suspense, tension, and delve into the dark, unknowable aspects of her characters will bring this piece alive. I can’t wait for us to bring the many versions of Grace’s gripping story, and the questions they raise, to television audiences.”
Both the screen adaptation and the Margaret Atwood novel on which the miniseries is based, introduce a fictional young doctor named Simon Jordan who researches the case and begins to fall in love with Grace. He soon becomes obsessed with her as he seeks to reconcile his perception of the mild-mannered woman he sees with the savage murder of which she has been convicted.
“Sarah Polley has done a brilliant adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s classic novel, which combines the richness of period drama with the tension and mystery of a modern day ‘Serial’,” said Harron. “It is an honour to be chosen to take this captivating story to the screen and to give new audiences the thrill of watching it unfold.”
“We’re beyond thrilled to collaborate with this amazingly talented team of Canadian women to bring Sarah Polley’s stunning script to Canadian audiences,” said Sally Catto, General Manager, Programming, CBC Television. “This important work tells the story of a complex woman, and I can’t imagine a more exceptional team to bring Margaret Atwood’s novel to the screen.”
“The opportunity to be involved with Alias Grace and world class storytellers was an opportunity we could not pass up,” said Elizabeth Bradley, Netflix Vice President of Content. “We are looking forward to working with our partners at Halfire Entertainment and CBC to bring this compelling miniseries to our worldwide audience.”
Alias Grace will be broadcast in Canada on CBC and stream globally on Netflix. executive producers will be Sarah Polley, Mary Harron and Noreen Halpern (Aftermath, Working the Engels, Rookie Blue). Co-producing alongside Polley will be D.J. Carson (Spotlight). Polley was nominated for an adapted screenplay Academy Award for the 2006 drama Away from Her, which was adapted from the Alice Munro short story The Bear Came Over the Mountain.
Published in 1996, Alias Grace was awarded the Giller Prize and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Additional books by Atwood that have been adapted for film and television include The Handmaid’s Tale, Payback, The Robber Bride, The Sin Eater and Surfacing. Kids’ CBC recently greenlit an animated series based on Atwood’s children’s book The Wide World of Wandering Wenda.

A24 and DIRECTV are excited to share the official trailer and poster for Morris From America. A smash hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival (where it won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award and star Craig Robinson received a Special Jury Award for Acting for his touching and nuanced performance in his first dramatic role), Morris From America centers on Morris Gentry (Markees Christmas, in an incredible breakout performance) a 13-year-old who has just relocated with his single father, Curtis (Robinson) to Heidelberg, Germany. Morris, who fancies himself the next Notorious B.I.G., is a complete fish-out-of-water—a budding hip-hop star in an EDM world. To complicate matters further, Morris quickly falls hard for his cool, rebellious, 15-year-old classmate Katrin (Lina Keller). Morris sets out against all odds to take the hip-hop world by storm and win the girl of his dreams.
Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Chad Hartigan (This is Martin Bonner), Morris From America is a delightfully original take on growing up, following your dreams, and finding your voice that features an extensive soundtrack of hip-hop standards, including Craig Mack’s “Flava in Ya Ear,” Notorious B.I.G.’s “Juicy,” Jeru the Damaja’s “Come Clean,” and, featured in the trailer, “Nobody Speak” by DJ Shadow (feat. Run the Jewels). Morris From America will be available exclusively on DIRECTV beginning July 7th and opens theatrically in select cities on August 19th

The film will be directed by Simon Curtis (Woman in Gold) and written by Frank Cottrell Boyce (Millions) and Simon Vaughan (“War and Peace”). Along with his mother Daphne (Margot Robbie), and his nanny Olive, Christopher Robin and his family are swept up in the international success of the books; the enchanting tales bringing hope and comfort to England after the First World War. But with the eyes of the world on Christopher Robin, what will the cost be to the family?
The film will be overseen by Greenbaum, Greenfield and Director of Production & Acquisitions Katie Goodson-Thomas. Gleeson is repped by The Agency and Paradigm and Robbie is repped by CAA, Management 360, Aran Michael Management and attorney Jeff Bernstein.
