Review: ‘Para Elisa’ is an unsettling freak show.
I’ve been a nanny and a teacher. We all know, even working outside early childhood education that some parents ans children are just plain weird. Yup. I said it. Weird. In Juanra Fernandez‘s new Spanish horror creation PARA ELISA, weird takes on a whole new meaning. 
In need of some quick and easy cash, Ana arrives for a job interview as a nanny. The mother of the house is an eccentric musician with a screw loose. One giant dilemma stands in Ana’s way; Mom is not only certifiably insane but her daughter, Elisa, is even more disturbed. Her sense of reality has been twisted by years of abuse combined with what seems like mental illness. Ana is made into a living doll for Elisa to “toy” with. 
Our heroine is played in realistic fashion by Ona Casamiquela. I do not know what I would do faced with this scenario but she fights her ass off. Scary mommy Diamantina is played brilliantly by Luisa Gavasa. Think Sunset Boulevard lost her mind. I would watch an entire film about her back story in a heart beat. Elisa is portrayed by Ana Turpin. She skillfully created a character you find yourself caring for and fearing. This is a fearless performance. I would seek out more work from her. Someone get Guillermo Del Toro in touch with Turpin, please? 
Not since Grand Piano have I been this unsettled by the sights and sounds of a piano in an opening credits sequence. This sets the stage for the entire rest of Para Elisa. Taking a page right out if Stephen King‘s Misery, add in a dash of People Under The Stairs parenting style and you’ve got yourself a rousing good time. The violence ramps up and up as the story progresses, all action occurring within one night, and at a tight 71 minute run time, Para Elisa is one satisfying nightmare.

After the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, another international incident involving Captain America and the Avengers results in collateral damage, prompting politicians to form a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to call in the Avengers, which results in the fracturing of the team while they attempt to protect the world from a new enemy.
Captain America: Civil War is scheduled to be released on May 6, 2016, in 3D and IMAX.

Mark Your Calendars: Less Than One Week Until the Directed by Women Celebration Kicks Off
Next Tuesday, September 1, the Directed by Women worldwide viewing party will commence running until September 15. The focus of this event, from founder Barbara O’Leary, is to have “film lovers will gather together in their communities around the world for film screenings & guest filmmaker visits designed to focus attention on and offer appreciation for women film directors and their work.” Over the course of those fifteen days, people from Seattle to New York to Spain to Montreal to Houston to India will gather together to celebrate the great cinematic output of women directors. Brittany Friesner has curated a special screening series at the fantastic Indiana University Cinema that includes visits from Penelope Spheeris (Decline of Western Civilization Parts I-III and Wayne’s World), the New Negress Film Society‘s Ja’Tovia Gary and Stefani Saintonge as well as Hannah Fidell who will host a special screening of her new film, 6 Years.
The Directed by Women events tumblr page is chock full of opportunities that may well be happening in your area. However, don’t be dissuaded if there are no group screenings in your area. Feel free to watch create your own screenings for yourself or others that you know. Be sure to post, Tweet, Facebook, Tumblr the hell out of what you are viewing, sharing your experiences with these wonderful films. Be sure to use the #directedbywomen tag.
I, myself, will be taking this opportunity to revisit the films of Lynne Ramsay, Ben’s at Home directed by Mars Horodyski, the documentaries of Barbara Kopple, especially Harlan County USA and I may just sneak some of Agnès Varda or Chantal Akerman‘s work in for good measure. I have had Barbara Loden‘s Wanda on my shelf for some time, so what better time than now to check it out?
The point is join in however you want. Showcase the work of women directors you love and find interesting. The fact that there is one female director for every 15 male directors working in narrative film which is unacceptable.
So join in however you want and however you can. You’ve got 6 days to get prepped and ready. Get there, people!

Review: ‘QUEEN OF EARTH’ is stunning portrait of a maddening descent.
Melissa and I were privileged to be invited to a special screening and Q&A of Alex Ross Perry‘s fourth feature, QUEEN OF EARTH, a deeply unnerving psychological drama. The film traces the relationship between Catherine (Elisabeth Moss, MAD MEN) and Virginia (Katherine Waterston, INHERENT VICE), best friends who retreat to a lake house after Catherine’s father dies and her boyfriend leaves her. Desperately seeking rest and recovery, when Catherine arrives at the cabin, she’s overwhelmed with memories of time spent at that same house with her boyfriend the year before and finds herself unable to decompress. As Virginia begins spending increasing amounts of time with a local love interest, Rich (Patrick Fugit), what was once closeness between the two women pivots toward hostility and resentment, sending Catherine into a downward spiral of delusion and madness. Vin Diesel Says ‘XXX 3’ Coming Sooner than You Think
Vin Diesel took to Instagram yesterday to announce that XXX 3 would start filming this December in the Philippines. Whoa?! What? No director has been announced yet, but Michael Ferris and John Brancato (Terminator Salvation) provided the most recent draft of the script, with Furious series mastermind Neal H. Moritz set to produce.
Diesel starred as leading man Xander Cage in 2002’s XXX. Although unable to star in the sequel due to scheduling conflicts, XXX: State of the Union, starring Ice Cube,was playing another XXX agent, Darius Stone, released in 2005 and subsequently failed at the box office. Wildly rumored to be called XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, the third big screen actioner has been planned for years, but has been stuck in limbo, but with the success of the Furious franchise, Diesel has a lot more pull to get passion projects greenlit.

ABC and Marvel Announce Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D Spin-off Series Starring Adrianne Palicki
After publicly denouncing earlier this year that any spin-off show of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” was in development anymore, ABC seems to have had a change of heart and it appears we’re getting a Mockingbird show!
Titled “Marvel’s Most Wanted,” the drama will focus on popular “S.H.I.E.L.D” characters Adrianne Palicki‘s Bobbi Morse (also known as Mockingbird) and Nick Blood’s Lance Hunter. “S.H.I.E.L.D” producers Jeffrey Bell and Paul Zbyszewski co-created the project for Marvel and ABC Studios and are co-writing the pilot. They will serve as showrunners and exec producers together with Marvel’s head of television Jeph Loeb who is also exec producing.

Stage 6 Films & Vertical Entertainment have released the trailer for the horror-comedy The Final Girls which hits theaters, On Demand, and Digital HD on October 9th, and we have it for you below!
Max Cartwright (Taissa Farmiga), a high school senior, is mysteriously transported with her friends into a 1980s horror film that starred Max’s mother, Amanda (Malin Åkerman), a celebrated scream queen. Trapped inside the movie, Max finds herself reunited with her mom, who she lost in real life. Together with Max’s friends, they must fend off the camp counselors’ raging hormones, battle a deranged machete-wielding killer, and find a way to escape the movie and make it back home.
The film also stars Alexander Ludwig, Nina Dobrev, Alia Shawkat, Thomas Middleditch, Adam DeVine, Angela Trimbur, Chloe Bridges and Tory N. Thompson and is directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson from a script by Joshua John Miller and M.A. Fortin.
