‘Boyhood 2’?! It’s A Possibility Says Richard Linklater

Boyhood_9

Richard Linklater is not afraid to continue a story if an idea presents itself. Previously creating a trilogy of films based around the Before Sunrise story, many have believed that the acclaimed director may be willing to continue the story which was set in motion in the critically acclaimed and award winning Boyhood film. For a year his answer has been quite non commmital, but now that award season has ended, it appears the thought has grown on the director. The director was on Jeff Goldsmith’s podcast recently and this is what he had to say:

“To be honest… this film first met its audience exactly a year ago and for the first six months of the year, my answer to that was absolutely not. This was twelve years, it was first grade through 12th grade; it was about getting out of high school. I had no idea about another story, there’s nothing to say. It hadn’t crossed my mind. But I don’t know if it’s been a combination of finally feeling that this is over or being asked a similar question a bunch over the last year, that I thought, well, I wake up in the morning thinking, ‘the 20s are pretty formative, you know?’ That’s where you really become who you’re going to be. It’s one thing to grow up and go to college, but it’s another thing to… So, I will admit my mind has drifted towards [this sequel idea].”

This is great news for fans of the film. Considering the possibilities of the continuing story of Mason would be a welcome addition to the original film, if done right, and with Linklater behind the lense, that is a foregone conclusion. The director has a proven track record of telling great stories and it is hard to believe this wouldn’t be handled in the best way possible. He went on to say:

“The twelve years structure came out of school structure. It wouldn’t have to be twelve years. It wouldn’t have to be… I mean, who knows. I mean, if I learned anything on the Before trilogy it took five years to realize that Jesse and Celine were still alive and had anything to say. This one would probably be more accelerated, but who knows.”

Continuing a story that has become beloved is a risk and it would take a commitment from all parties of the original film, Ellar Coltrane being the most important as it is his story. Would the cast return? Would Linklater really take on another story? He added:

“I’ve dealt with this before… I have, in my movies, touched on people in their 20s. So to what degree I’ll be going over certain territories again—I dunno, It’s impossible to say what may or may not come of it… I would love to keep working with this cast and I think we all would. But that can’t be the primary reason to do it. You always need something to say. You can’t do it just cause you want to work with your friends, you gotta have something really inside you you’re trying to communicate about those years. I might happen, but I dunno, it’s in the ether in the moment.”

Whether we see a return film will be a mystery until the cameras roll, but I for one would be lined up to see Adulthood or whatever it would be called.

Will It Be Peter Parker or Miles Morales as the MCU’s Spider-Man?

miles-morales-and-peter-parker

Interesting news coming out of this week’s Meet The Movie Press show (which I’m available for guys..let me know) where The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider was a guest. He made some comments in regards to the ethnicity of the future incarnation of Spider-Man and which possible version of the web slinger we could see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and upcoming Sony sequel. Jeff stated that he  was “95% sure” that Marvel’s incarnation of Spider-Man would not be white. A move that might come as a shock to some. He also said he didn’t think it would be Peter Parker, and that even if it was he would be “most likely, black”, with a chance he could be Latino.

Since the podcast, Jeff has taken to Twitter to discuss the topic and add some interesting comments that will no doubt continue to  spark good conversation amongst the fans:

Obviously nothing is set in stone and until Marvel and Sony announce the casting of the new Spider-Man we will need to wait, but it will be interesting how they will handle the first involvement of our friendly neighborhood web head in his first MCU film!

Who would you like to see play the character and would it be Peter Parker or Miles Morales?

Sound off!

James Gunn Fires Back at Award Season Superhero Movie Hate

a9cd3a19b60e2fe97f2cd806be99809f

Director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) took to his Facebook page last night to dispel the sentiment that superhero movies were plaguing Hollywood, here’s what he had to say:

“I didn’t really find the Jack Black superhero jokes offensive, did you guys? It was, like, a joke. I’m not sure if you guys noticed, but the writing on the Oscars didn’t seem to be all that well thought out.

As far as Dan Gilroy saying that attendees of the Independent Spirit Awards have survived against a “tsunami of superhero films” – well it seems a bit weird coming from a guy whose wife has acted in two Thor films – really, that seems like you’ve drowned horribly in that tsunami. But I know I just kind of make up stuff as I go along on these awards shows, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Whatever the case, the truth is, popular fare in any medium has always been snubbed by the self-appointed elite. I’ve already won more awards than I ever expected for Guardians. What bothers me slightly is that many people assume because you make big films that you put less love, care, and thought into them then people do who make independent films or who make what are considered more serious Hollywood films.

I’ve made B-movies, independent films, children’s movies, horror films, and gigantic spectacles. I find there are plenty of people everywhere making movies for a buck or to feed their own vanity. And then there are people who do what they do because they love story-telling, they love cinema, and they want to add back to the world some of the same magic they’ve taken from the works of others. In all honesty, I do no find a strikingly different percentage of those with integrity and those without working within any of these fields of film.

If you think people who make superhero movies are dumb, come out and say we’re dumb. But if you, as an independent filmmaker or a “serious” filmmaker, think you put more love into your characters than the Russo Brothers do Captain America, or Joss Whedon does the Hulk, or I do a talking raccoon, you are simply mistaken.”

Mic dropped..and now…my turn..

I think many people who stand up in front of a large crowd sometimes use that moment for a stance in a positive way, like Patricia Arquette, and then there’s Dan Gilroy.

My question to Dan would be: Why does it matter? There are an abundance of every genre of film every year least of all superhero movies! Hundreds upon hundreds of comedy, drama, horror, and action fill Cineplex’s every Wednesday, Thursday or Friday every weekend of every month….to single out superhero movies is a joke.

Its jealousy on the part of someone I actually admired and VOTED for for the Spirit Awards. It shouldn’t matter what type of films are getting audiences to see movies as long as they are GOOD MOVIES. Dan forgets that it is the big films that help fund the smaller ones, maybe he should remind himself that and steer clear of crapping in the pool..

Dan…you directed one “Indie” movie…ONE MOVIE (which wasn’t that indie to be honest) and before that you WROTE Reel Steel, Two For The Money, The Bourne Legacy and Freejack….far from indie movies, then you stood up in front of lifer indie people and chanted ‘nay to Hollywood’ like you were one of them. Here’s the truth, maybe for one night you were, but one movie does not make you something you’re not. Let’s remember to take a moment and think before we speak in the future to avoid these types of hissy fits.

Yours truly,

Michael Petrelli

Steven Spielberg May Direct Next ‘Indiana Jones’…Is Chris Pratt Joining Him?

chris-pratt-indiana-jonesSounds as if we have a marriage made in Disney heaven. Deadline is reporting that Steven Spielberg (at least his team of people) is potentially interested in directing the fifth installment into the Indiana Jones franchise and he would like to bring Chris Pratt along with him. This news comes mere months after it was reported that Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm were eyeing the Guardians of the Galaxy star as the successor to Harrison Ford’s famous character.

Ford, now 73 years old, has been quite vocal about wanting to return to the franchise for one more go, but if these reports are true, it would appear that the legendary actor was being forced out. This would not come as a surprise to many as the last installment, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, is widely considered an epic failure by fans and critics alike, despite making close to $800 million globally.

We will next see Chris Pratt star in this summers blockbuster Jurassic World, a movie produced by Spielberg, who is said to have selected Pratt to star in the film.

Laura Benanti Tapped to Play Supergirl’s Mother

laura-benanti-1

Deadline is reporting that Nashville star Laura Benanti has been cast to play Alura Zor-El, the birth mother of Kara, aka Supergirl (Melissa Benoist). The article provides a short description of the character:

A strong noblewoman, Alura sends Kara to Earth to escape Krypton’s destruction. Her wisdom and guidance echoes across space and time, proving invaluable on Kara’s journey toward becoming Supergirl.

Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Productions, best known for bringing successful DC properties Arrow and The Flash to the CW, are partnering on this Supergirl project for CBS.  The project centers around Kara Zor-El (Benoist), who escapes the destruction of Krypton and arrives on Earth where she finds out that she has the same powers as her now famous cousin, Superman. As the years pass, Kara soon learns to harness her powers and use them to become a hero in her own way.

Since the show takes place after the destruction of her home planet, my guess is that we will see Laura Benanti’s appear in some hologram messages sent along with Kara on her escape much in the same vein as Kal-El. Only time will tell though.

No word on the premiere date for the pilot, which was written by Ali Adler and Greg Berlanti, the producers on the show, along with Sarah Schechter and Warner Bros. TV.

Look for Supergirl to appear on the CBS lineup in the coming months

Jared Leto Discusses Playing The Joker in the Upcoming ‘Suicide Squad’ Movie

the_joker

When the upcoming Suicide Squad cast was announced, one of the most intriguing casting decisions was that of Academy Award winning actor Jared Leto as the Joker. The actor spoke to Billboard this week and opened up about what we can expect from his portrayal.

“The opportunity to take on this nearly Shakespearean character — that’s what graphic novels and comic books are becoming, right?” Leto says.“[He’s] this beautiful disaster of a character — what a big challenge.”

The actor also went on to reveal that he is packing on the pounds for this role, quoted as saying, “I’m trying to gain a lot of weight. It means I have to eat every couple of hours — and I’m terrible at eating a lot.” No word on the direction that Leto will take the character, but the announcement of gaining some weight is an interesting mention. A character most beloved by fans, The Joker will be played by a new actor for the first time since Heath Ledger’s performance in 2008’s The Dark Knight.

The film will shoot from April until September for an August 5, 2016 release.

Zack Snyder Reveals First Look at Jason Momoa as Aquaman!

aquamanjasonmomoa

Zack Snyder pretty much broke the internet today when he decided to reveal the first look at Jason Momoa as Aquaman!

Included with the photo was the following statement and hastag:

There is only one true King. #unitetheseven

Momoa, it has been previously announced, to is set to first appear as The Marine Marvel in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice set to be released on March 25, 2016. He will then star in Justice League Part One in 2017, followed by the solo Aquaman movie in 2018 and, most likely, Justice League Part Two in 2019.

Biggest question here is, what does the tagline  “Unite The Seven” refer to? My guess is this is the first of seven posters which will reveal the Justice League, as there are seven on them (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, Green Lantern, and Flash). We will just have to wait and see…

Sound off! What do you think of the look?

Say Whut? A ‘Shaft’ Remake? You Damn Right!

Shaft-Bar-640In the “I can’t make this stuff up” file, The Wrap is reporting that yet another reboot of the Shaft franchise is on its way. Today comes word that New Line Cinema has acquired the rights to the Shaft franchise and is partnering with Davis Entertainment’s John Davis, to develop a reboot.

Originally a 1970 novel by Ernest Tidyman, became a household name in the 1970’s with the feature film, directed by Gordon Parks and starring Richard Roundtree in the title role. The film went on to spawn two sequels, Shaft’s Big Score in 1972 and Shaft in Africa in 1973, both of which with met with mixed reactions. CBS picked up the rights and tried their luck at a weekly television show starring Roundtree, but ultimately failed to find it’s audience.

A reboot by director John Singleton and starring Samuel L. Jackson was released in 2000 to modest box office numbers. A film that wasn’t bad, but didn’t perform well enough for future installments.

No word on casting at this time, but safe bet that Idris Elba will be on someone’s speed dial.

insurgent-movieExclusive to Samsung Gear VR and Samsung Milk VR, 360°Immersive Video Creates Unique Experience for Fans of The Divergent Series: Insurgent

Lionsgate and Samsung have teamed up to create the exclusive virtual reality (VR) experience “INSURGENT – SHATTER REALITY,” the two companies announced today.

The four-minute visual work of art is a fully-immersive, 360° narrative experience set in the world of the upcoming feature film The Divergent Series: Insurgent  and features stars from the film including Academy Award winner Kate Winslet, Miles Teller and Mekhi Phifer. Beginning February 27, fans can experience the VR content for themselves exclusively through Samsung Gear™ VR powered by the Galaxy Note® 4 as “INSURGENT – SHATTER REALITY” goes on tour in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Austin and San Francisco prior to going live across all platforms and app stores.

Don’t live in one of these cities? Well. the experience will also be available exclusively on Samsung’s Milk VR™ service through March 1. Fans outside the tour markets will have an opportunity to view the experience on Samsung Gear VR over the weekend of March 7-8 at select Best Buy® stores across the US.

“Virtual reality elevates the world of Divergentto a whole new level by creating a uniquely exciting and immersive experience for our fans,” said Lionsgate Chief Marketing Officer Tim Palen.  “The ‘INSURGENT – SHATTER REALITY’ experience reflects our commitment to partner with leading technology companies like Samsung to remain at the cutting edge of VR and other innovations that expand the worlds of our franchises and extend our storytelling in exciting new directions.”

Nick DiCarlo, Vice President and General Manager, Immersive Products & Virtual Reality at Samsung Electronics America went on to say:

This partnership will bring fans closer than ever to the action in this blockbuster series.”

By putting on the Gear VR headset, consumers are immersed in the role of “Divergent” members of society who have been captured by Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet) and her Erudite faction and are subjected to a series of mental ”simulations” in order to determine the full extent of their divergence. As the VR technology simulates Jeanine and her faction cohorts testing them with experimental serums, they experience two distinct, intensely gripping and realistic fearscapes, transporting them from the frightening heights of a crumbling Chicago skyscraper to the intimidating challenge of a massive, fast-approaching locomotive.

Created by virtual reality innovators Kite & Lightning with assistance from the film’s VFX team, the experience was built using stereoscopic 4K video of the actors, with effects and environment built in Unreal Engine 4 and then rendered into an immersive 3D/360° experience. It was scored by The Divergent Series: Insurgent composer Joe Trapanese.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent, the second installment of the blockbuster Divergent franchise, will be released in theaters worldwide on March 20.  The first Divergent film grossed nearly $300 million at the global box office, and the Divergent trilogy has sold more than 30 million books around the world.

Neill Blomkamp is Officially Directing the Next ‘Alien’ Sequel!

alien-iso-main Neill Blomkamp sparked a nerdgasm last month when he posted some unofficial concept art for his vision of a new chapter in 20th Century Fox’s Alien franchise, but nothing as to the excitement that comes today as the District 9 director posted to his Instagram page that he would indeed be directing the next installment of the Alien saga.

20th Century Fox has since confirmed the news, and announced that it is, indeed, a sequel to the original Alien franchise and not the Prometheus sequel which is slated for a March 4, 2016 release.

As of press, no word on if Signourney Weaver will be returning to the franchise…but we can hope.

More as it becomes available

Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien

New Trailer for ‘The Water Diviner’ Starring Russell Crowe

The Water Diviner, Russell Crowe

Academy Award winner Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) makes his directorial debut on “The Water Diviner,” an epic and inspiring tale of one man’s life-changing journey of discovery.

Crowe also stars in the film as Australian farmer Joshua Connor, who, in 1919, goes in search of his three missing sons, last known to have fought against the Turks in the bloody Battle of Gallipoli. Arriving in Istanbul, he is thrust into a vastly different world, where he encounters others who have suffered their own losses in the conflict: Ayshe (Olga Kurylenko), a strikingly beautiful but guarded hotelier raising a child alone; her young, spirited son, Orhan (Dylan Georgiades), who finds a friend in Connor; and Major Hasan (Yilmaz Erdoğan), a Turkish officer who fought against Connor’s boys and who may be this father’s only hope. With seemingly insurmountable obstacles in his path, Connor must travel across the battle-scarred Turkish landscape to find the truth…and his own peace.

Crowe directed “The Water Diviner” from a screenplay by Andrew Knight and Andrew Anastasios, who were also executive producers on the film. The film was produced by Andrew Mason, Keith Rodger and Troy Lum, with James Packer, Brett Ratner, Kerry Stokes, Tim Worner, Angus Ross and John Collee also serving as executive producers.

The film’s international ensemble cast also includes Olga Kurylenko, Yilmaz Erdogan, Cem Yilmaz, Jai Courtney, Ryan Corr, James Fraser, Ben O’Toole, Jacqueline McKenzie and Isabel Lucas.

The team collaborating with Crowe behind the scenes included Oscar-winning director of photography Andrew Lesnie (“The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”), production designer Christopher Kennedy, editor Matt Villa, and costume designer Tess Schofield. The score was composed by two-time Oscar nominee David Hirschfelder (“Elizabeth,” “Shine”).

“The Water Diviner” recently won three Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, including Best Picture. The film also won in the categories of Best Supporting Actor (Erdogan) and Best Costume Design. It had received five additional nominations, for Best Lead Actor (Crowe), Best Supporting Actress (McKenzie), Best Original Screenplay, Best Production Design and Best Editing.

Ratpac Entertainment and Seven Network Australia present, in association with Megiste Films, DC Tour, EJM Productions and Axphon, a Hopscotch Features and Fear of God Films Production, “The Water Diviner.” Opening in limited release on April 24, 2015, the film is being distributed in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Liz’s Review: ‘THE LAST FIVE YEARS’ hits every note.

TheLastFiveYearsPoster

When I graduated college in 2002, everyone was buzzing about a new musical by one of my favorite lyricists/composers Jason Robert Brown. Not a single person I spoke to about The Last Five Years walked away without some sense of wonder. God only knows how I missed the run, perhaps graduation and surrounding shenanigans got in my way. Needless to say, when I heard that the show was making the jump to the big screen, I leapt at the chance to finally get in on the magic.

TheLastFiveYearsJeremyJordanStill

In this adaptation of the hit musical, The Last Five Years is a musical deconstruction of a love affair and a marriage taking place over a five year period. Jamie (Jeremy Jordan), a young, talented up-and-coming Jewish novelist falls in love with Cathy (Anna Kendrick), a Shiksa Goddess and struggling actress. Their story is told almost entirely through song.  All of Cathy’s songs begin at the end of their marriage and move backwards in time to the beginning of their love affair, while Jamie’s songs start at the beginning of their affair and move forward to the end of their marriage. They meet in the center when Jamie proposes.

TheLastFiveYearsAnnaKendrickStill

The camera work in this film is stunning; voyeuristic without being intrusive. The opening shot is very much an homage to Hitchcock‘s bird’s eye opening shot in Psycho (no story line similarities, I assure you.) The tinted lenses used to represent the good and bad in the relationship are thoughtful and extraordinarily effective for each emotional shift. There is something truly special about this film. It appears absolutely seamless as it bounces from timeline to timeline. Jason Robert Brown‘s lyrics are some of the most accessible in the industry. Think thought provoking, stream of consciousness, meets clever and catchy musical theater for the any audience. Anna Kendrick does some of her strongest work to date as Cathy. The opening ballad, “Still Hurting’ is a killer punch in the gut. This is tough stuff and she nails it. I was thoroughly impressed. The stickler in me wishes her presence had been a tad bit stronger when it came to sharing the screen with Jordan as he sings. There seems to be a slight disconnect when he takes center stage. But, I will say her acting chops on the heavier songs are quite lovely. Jeremy Jordan as Jamie is a stunner. From the moment he appears on screen, from the first note, he owns this character. I could not have asked for more from his performance. He lights up the screen, his voice is delicious, and he is an unapologetic scene-stealer and I am so fine with that. In no way is he obnoxious, or over-the-top. In my pretty harsh musical theater book, he gets an A+. Jeremy Jordan is a star. Standing ovation to director Richard LaGravenese. Successfully adapting a musical is a huge task. This film is so down-to-earth. You do not have to be a musical theater fan to enjoy this movie. That alone, makes it a hit. I highly recommend The Last Five Years and I guarantee you will walk away humming some, if not all, of these gorgeous songs.

The Last Five Years opens today!
