Don’t Look Now, But A New DC Comics Team-Up TV Series is Coming with Some Familiar Faces!

fzdeE5f

DC TV universe is about to get bigger as the CW looks to create it’s own team-up spin-off of it’s successful Arrow and Flash franchises. A list of familiar actors and actresses planned to reprise their roles on the new show has surfaced and *SPOILER* one of the names will surprise you!

Arrow creators Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim are working with the network to create the show with Brandon Routh reprising his Arrow role as Ray Palmer/The Atom, Victor Garber reprising his Flash role as Dr. Martin Stein/Firestorm , Wentworth Miller as Flash villain Leonard Snart/Captain Cold and Caity Lotz as Sara Lance/Black Canary. The project will also include three major DC Comics characters who have never appeared in a TV series!

Whoa whoa whoa…wait a minute….Caity Lotz? Fans of the show Arrow will remember it was Lotz’s character Sara who met her demise this season on the show, so how could this be? And why would Captain Cold be part of this superhero team up? Could they be re-creating his character as Citizen Cold persona from the comics? And Martin Stein is only HALF of Firestorm in the Flash series, how will they work without Robbie Amell’s half! What in the crap is going on here?!

Brandon-Routh

The project is in early stages of development, so obviously a lot could change from now until production so we’ll let the creative minds behind this idea work it all out, but I can honestly say I am extremely interested to see what they come up with.

Word is that the show could go straight to series, possibly for next midseason debut

‘Boardwalk Empire’ Star Eyed for ‘The Crow’ Reboot

jack-huston

This reboot of The Crow has gone through many changes since it’s announcement so all information about the project should be taken with a grain of salt, but news today has surfaced that the film may have finally nailed down its lead. Deadline is reporting that Jack Huston is now the front runner for the titular role. James O’Barr’s dark comic book antihero has seen many re-creations since the original film was released, but none that have merited any critical acclaim. This reboot has been met with a lot of fan skepticism since originally attached star Luke Evans departed the project a few months back, but the possible addition of Huston might just calm the waters.

No release date has been announced, although it is widely rumored that the film will go into production before the end of the year.

Jeremy’s Interview: Lance Edmands, Award-Winning ‘Bluebird’ Writer/Director

SFF_BLUEBIRD_Lance_Edmands_press

If you followed my coverage of the Indy Film Fest, you might remember I was able to catch (review here) the Grand Jury & American Spectrum Prize-Winning Bluebird, written and directed by Lance Edmands. You also might remember that it was my favorite of the films that I saw at the festival. I was curious to learn more about the film, its evolution and its journey to the screen so I reached out to Lance and he was kind of enough to give me 45 minutes of his time. Here’s what he had to say… Read More →

Harrison Ford Aboard ‘Blade Runner’ Sequel with Denis Villeneuve to Direct

blade-runner

Alcon co-founders and co-CEO’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson have announced that Harrison Ford will return to reprise his role as Rick Deckard in the sequel to Blade Runner and Academy Award nominated director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners) is set to direct. A lot could still change with the project, but all signs point to principal photography starting in summer of 2016. Hampton Fancher, who co-wrote the original film, returns to co-write an original screenplay, along with Michael Green, based on an idea by Fancher and Ridely Scott.

We are honored that Harrison is joining us on this journey with Denis Villeneuve who is a singular talent, as we experienced personally onPrisoners,’” said Johnson and Kosove, “Hampton and Michael, with Ridley Scott, have crafted a uniquely potent and faithful sequel to one of the most universally celebrated films of all time, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with this amazing, creative team.”

Very little more is known about the story other than that it takes place several decades after the conclusion of the 1982 original.

Alcon Entertainment acquired the film, television and ancillary franchise rights to Blade Runner in 2011 from producer Bud Yorkin to produce prequels and sequels to the science-fiction thriller. Yorkin will serve as a producer on the sequel along with Kosove and Johnson. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will co-produce.

Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Alien’ to Rewrite the Franchise

Director Neill Blomkamp wants you to forget that Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection ever happened…literally. The director broke the internet last week when he announced he was making the next installment of the Alien franchise and that actress Sigourney Weaver was planning to reprise her role as Ellen Ripley, but Sky Movies spoke with the duo while both are promoting their new film Chappie and this is what the director had to say:

“I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of ‘Alien,’” says the director.“So it’s ‘Alien,’ ‘Aliens’ and then this movie.”

Weaver went on to say this new film will give Ripley “A proper ending.”

Considering much of the concept art that surface a few months back, the new film will see the return of some familiar faces as Michael Biehn’s Corporal Dwayne Hicks is featured, but there is no confirmation that the gritty actor will return to reprise his role. Now, the director mentions there’s a three-decade age gap between Aliens and the new film, so there are questions as to whether this new chapter continues directly after the events of the 1986 film, but one things for certain, Blomkamp has the passion for this project to make Alien fans extremely happy.

You can check out some of the concept art below:

‘Bluebird’ Starring Mad Men’s John Slattery & Lance Edmands’ Grand Jury & American Spectrum Prize Winner

BLUEBIRD-iTunes-Full-Key-ArtHaving gone to my fair share of film festivals, it is rare that I agree with the juries who award the prizes for “best of the fest.” They often see far more in films that I dismiss and frequently don’t give enough credence to those that I love, because as anyone knows my opinion is always correct (wink, wink). The one time I attended a fest that got it 100% was the 2004 Chicago International Film Festival when Nimrod Antal‘s mesmerizing Kontroll took home the Gold Hugo. Now, while I didn’t see every film at this year’s Indy Film FestLance Edmands’ Bluebird was far and away my favorite of those that I saw and certainly worthy of the Grand Jury Prize, tops of the fest, as well as the American Spectrum Prize for the best film made by an American director (the Audience Award has yet to be awarded). So, bravo to the jury! Read More →

Warner Bros. Releases Synopsis of the New Rocky Spinoff ‘Creed’

WB

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures comes award-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler’s Creed.  The film explores a new chapter in the “Rocky” story and stars Academy Award nominee Sylvester Stallone in his iconic role.  The film also reunites Coogler with his Fruitvale Station star Michael B. Jordan as the son of Apollo Creed.

Adonis Johnson (Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born.  Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa.

Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Stallone) down and asks him to be his trainer.  Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight game for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo—the fierce rival who became his closest friend.  Agreeing to take him on, Rocky trains the young fighter, even as the former champ is battling an opponent more deadly than any he faced in the ring.

With Rocky in his corner, it isn’t long before Adonis gets his own shot at the title…but can he develop not only the drive but also the heart of a true fighter, in time to get into the ring?

Creed also stars Tessa Thompson (Selma) as Bianca, a local singer-songwriter who becomes involved with Adonis; Phylicia Rashad (Lifetime’s Steel Magnolias) as Mary Anne Creed, Apollo’s widow; and English pro boxer and former three-time ABA Heavyweight Champion Anthony Bellew as boxing champ “Pretty” Ricky Conlan.

Coogler directs from a screenplay he wrote with Aaron Covington, based on characters from the Rocky series written by Sylvester Stallone.  The film is being produced by Robert Chartoff, Irwin Winkler, Charles Winkler, William Chartoff, David Winkler, Sylvester Stallone and Kevin King Templeton.   Joining Coogler behind the scenes are director of photography Maryse Alberti (The Wrestler) and costume designer Emma Potts (127 Hours), as well as his Fruitvale Station team: editors Claudia Castello and Michael P. Shawver; production designer Hannah Beachler; and composer Ludwig Göransson.

The movie is opening on November 25, 2015

‘Power Rangers’ Fan Film Starring Katee Sackhoff is Nothing Like You’d Expect

power-rangers-originalProduced by Adi Shankar (Lone Survivor) is back with another fan film, this time tackling the popular Mighty Morphin Power Rangers franchise. Much like his previous outings The Punisher: Dirty Laundry and Venom: Truth in Journalism, this is a dark, gritty R-rated take on the children’s show and, I must say, this may be his finest achievement yet.

The short stars Katee Sackhoff as Kimberly, the Pink Ranger and James Van Der Beek as Rocky, the (second) Red Ranger who has sided with the main antagonist of the fan film, the Machine Empire, who debuted during Power Rangers: Zeo. The film also features Russ Bain, Bree Olson,  and Will Yun Lee. Director Joseph Kahn has created a version of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers like we’ve never seen before! Check out the video below!

Why you might ask did Shankar chose the Power Rangers? Well…he answers that question in the video below. Enjoy

An actual reboot of the Power Rangers is in development at Lionsgate with a script by Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller. It’s set for release in theaters on July 22, 2016.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Set To Return for ‘Terminator Genisys’ Sequels

arnold-schwarzenegger-terminator-genisys

In a surprising move, Paramount Pictures have already set release dates for two sequels to Terminator Genisys months before the films release. The first sequel will arrive May 19, 2017 followed by a second sequel on June 29, 2018. “The Oak” spoke with Arnold Fans where he dropped the news that he will return for both sequels and that production will begin next year.

Terminator Genisys is the fourth film in the franchise and the second straight attempt at creating a new story within the universe. Terminator Salvation was released in 2009 and was widely panned by critics and audiences alike. Forget what you knew about the franchise before because this movie looks to turn the franchise on its head.

Synopsis:

In 2029 John Connor, leader of the Resistance, continues the war against the machines. At the Los Angeles offensive, John’s fears of the unknown future begin to emerge when John is notified by his army unit, Tech-Com, that Skynet will attack him from two fronts, past and future, and will ultimately change warfare forever.

On the verge of winning the war against Skynet, Connor sends his trusted lieutenant Kyle Reese back through time to save his mother’s life and ensure his own existence. However, Kyle finds the original past changed. After being orphaned at age nine by a T-800, sent to kill her when she was young to prevent the future in which Skynet is defeated, Sarah Connor has been brought up by another Terminator T-800 programmed to protect her. This Terminator has then trained her to face her destiny, which she adamantly tries to reject.

Now, Kyle and Sarah have to escape the new model Terminator, T-800 and the T-1000 sent by Skynet to kill them, with the help of the old Terminator

Along with Arnold, the film stars Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, Byung Hun Lee and Matt Smith. The movie is directed by Alan Taylor (Thor: Dark World).

The movie arrives in theaters on July 1, 2015

‘Boyhood 2’?! It’s A Possibility Says Richard Linklater

Boyhood_9

Richard Linklater is not afraid to continue a story if an idea presents itself. Previously creating a trilogy of films based around the Before Sunrise story, many have believed that the acclaimed director may be willing to continue the story which was set in motion in the critically acclaimed and award winning Boyhood film. For a year his answer has been quite non commmital, but now that award season has ended, it appears the thought has grown on the director. The director was on Jeff Goldsmith’s podcast recently and this is what he had to say:

“To be honest… this film first met its audience exactly a year ago and for the first six months of the year, my answer to that was absolutely not. This was twelve years, it was first grade through 12th grade; it was about getting out of high school. I had no idea about another story, there’s nothing to say. It hadn’t crossed my mind. But I don’t know if it’s been a combination of finally feeling that this is over or being asked a similar question a bunch over the last year, that I thought, well, I wake up in the morning thinking, ‘the 20s are pretty formative, you know?’ That’s where you really become who you’re going to be. It’s one thing to grow up and go to college, but it’s another thing to… So, I will admit my mind has drifted towards [this sequel idea].”

This is great news for fans of the film. Considering the possibilities of the continuing story of Mason would be a welcome addition to the original film, if done right, and with Linklater behind the lense, that is a foregone conclusion. The director has a proven track record of telling great stories and it is hard to believe this wouldn’t be handled in the best way possible. He went on to say:

“The twelve years structure came out of school structure. It wouldn’t have to be twelve years. It wouldn’t have to be… I mean, who knows. I mean, if I learned anything on the Before trilogy it took five years to realize that Jesse and Celine were still alive and had anything to say. This one would probably be more accelerated, but who knows.”

Continuing a story that has become beloved is a risk and it would take a commitment from all parties of the original film, Ellar Coltrane being the most important as it is his story. Would the cast return? Would Linklater really take on another story? He added:

“I’ve dealt with this before… I have, in my movies, touched on people in their 20s. So to what degree I’ll be going over certain territories again—I dunno, It’s impossible to say what may or may not come of it… I would love to keep working with this cast and I think we all would. But that can’t be the primary reason to do it. You always need something to say. You can’t do it just cause you want to work with your friends, you gotta have something really inside you you’re trying to communicate about those years. I might happen, but I dunno, it’s in the ether in the moment.”

Whether we see a return film will be a mystery until the cameras roll, but I for one would be lined up to see Adulthood or whatever it would be called.

Will It Be Peter Parker or Miles Morales as the MCU’s Spider-Man?

miles-morales-and-peter-parker

Interesting news coming out of this week’s Meet The Movie Press show (which I’m available for guys..let me know) where The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider was a guest. He made some comments in regards to the ethnicity of the future incarnation of Spider-Man and which possible version of the web slinger we could see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and upcoming Sony sequel. Jeff stated that he  was “95% sure” that Marvel’s incarnation of Spider-Man would not be white. A move that might come as a shock to some. He also said he didn’t think it would be Peter Parker, and that even if it was he would be “most likely, black”, with a chance he could be Latino.

Since the podcast, Jeff has taken to Twitter to discuss the topic and add some interesting comments that will no doubt continue to  spark good conversation amongst the fans:

Obviously nothing is set in stone and until Marvel and Sony announce the casting of the new Spider-Man we will need to wait, but it will be interesting how they will handle the first involvement of our friendly neighborhood web head in his first MCU film!

Who would you like to see play the character and would it be Peter Parker or Miles Morales?

Sound off!

James Gunn Fires Back at Award Season Superhero Movie Hate

a9cd3a19b60e2fe97f2cd806be99809f

Director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) took to his Facebook page last night to dispel the sentiment that superhero movies were plaguing Hollywood, here’s what he had to say:

“I didn’t really find the Jack Black superhero jokes offensive, did you guys? It was, like, a joke. I’m not sure if you guys noticed, but the writing on the Oscars didn’t seem to be all that well thought out.

As far as Dan Gilroy saying that attendees of the Independent Spirit Awards have survived against a “tsunami of superhero films” – well it seems a bit weird coming from a guy whose wife has acted in two Thor films – really, that seems like you’ve drowned horribly in that tsunami. But I know I just kind of make up stuff as I go along on these awards shows, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Whatever the case, the truth is, popular fare in any medium has always been snubbed by the self-appointed elite. I’ve already won more awards than I ever expected for Guardians. What bothers me slightly is that many people assume because you make big films that you put less love, care, and thought into them then people do who make independent films or who make what are considered more serious Hollywood films.

I’ve made B-movies, independent films, children’s movies, horror films, and gigantic spectacles. I find there are plenty of people everywhere making movies for a buck or to feed their own vanity. And then there are people who do what they do because they love story-telling, they love cinema, and they want to add back to the world some of the same magic they’ve taken from the works of others. In all honesty, I do no find a strikingly different percentage of those with integrity and those without working within any of these fields of film.

If you think people who make superhero movies are dumb, come out and say we’re dumb. But if you, as an independent filmmaker or a “serious” filmmaker, think you put more love into your characters than the Russo Brothers do Captain America, or Joss Whedon does the Hulk, or I do a talking raccoon, you are simply mistaken.”

Mic dropped..and now…my turn..

I think many people who stand up in front of a large crowd sometimes use that moment for a stance in a positive way, like Patricia Arquette, and then there’s Dan Gilroy.

My question to Dan would be: Why does it matter? There are an abundance of every genre of film every year least of all superhero movies! Hundreds upon hundreds of comedy, drama, horror, and action fill Cineplex’s every Wednesday, Thursday or Friday every weekend of every month….to single out superhero movies is a joke.

Its jealousy on the part of someone I actually admired and VOTED for for the Spirit Awards. It shouldn’t matter what type of films are getting audiences to see movies as long as they are GOOD MOVIES. Dan forgets that it is the big films that help fund the smaller ones, maybe he should remind himself that and steer clear of crapping in the pool..

Dan…you directed one “Indie” movie…ONE MOVIE (which wasn’t that indie to be honest) and before that you WROTE Reel Steel, Two For The Money, The Bourne Legacy and Freejack….far from indie movies, then you stood up in front of lifer indie people and chanted ‘nay to Hollywood’ like you were one of them. Here’s the truth, maybe for one night you were, but one movie does not make you something you’re not. Let’s remember to take a moment and think before we speak in the future to avoid these types of hissy fits.

Yours truly,

Michael Petrelli
