Concept Trailer for Sci-Fi Movie ‘The Leviathan’ Will Make Your Jaw Drop

1426608253-leviathan-concept

Very few times I can honestly say that my jaw dropped…literally, while watching a trailer, today is one of those days. Academy Award-nominee Ruairí Robinson (The Last Days on Mars) has released a 3-minute tease into his concept for the movie The Leviathan which he hopes will spark enough interest that studios come banging on his door with bags of money in hand.

Here’s a synopsis for the film:

By the early 22nd century, mankind had colonized many worlds. Faster than light travel was made possible by harvesting exotic matter from the eggs of the largest species mankind has ever seen. Those that take part in the hunt are mostly involuntary labor.

Sounds very Dune-ish! Robinson took to his Twitter page to release concept art by Jim Murray (creature design by Jordu Schell), one of the principal designers of the Na’vi for Avatar. Let’s hope we get to see this vision on screen in the coming years!

Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Alien’ to Rewrite the Franchise

Director Neill Blomkamp wants you to forget that Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection ever happened…literally. The director broke the internet last week when he announced he was making the next installment of the Alien franchise and that actress Sigourney Weaver was planning to reprise her role as Ellen Ripley, but Sky Movies spoke with the duo while both are promoting their new film Chappie and this is what the director had to say:

“I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of ‘Alien,’” says the director.“So it’s ‘Alien,’ ‘Aliens’ and then this movie.”

Weaver went on to say this new film will give Ripley “A proper ending.”

Considering much of the concept art that surface a few months back, the new film will see the return of some familiar faces as Michael Biehn’s Corporal Dwayne Hicks is featured, but there is no confirmation that the gritty actor will return to reprise his role. Now, the director mentions there’s a three-decade age gap between Aliens and the new film, so there are questions as to whether this new chapter continues directly after the events of the 1986 film, but one things for certain, Blomkamp has the passion for this project to make Alien fans extremely happy.

You can check out some of the concept art below:

‘Power Rangers’ Fan Film Starring Katee Sackhoff is Nothing Like You’d Expect

power-rangers-originalProduced by Adi Shankar (Lone Survivor) is back with another fan film, this time tackling the popular Mighty Morphin Power Rangers franchise. Much like his previous outings The Punisher: Dirty Laundry and Venom: Truth in Journalism, this is a dark, gritty R-rated take on the children’s show and, I must say, this may be his finest achievement yet.

The short stars Katee Sackhoff as Kimberly, the Pink Ranger and James Van Der Beek as Rocky, the (second) Red Ranger who has sided with the main antagonist of the fan film, the Machine Empire, who debuted during Power Rangers: Zeo. The film also features Russ Bain, Bree Olson,  and Will Yun Lee. Director Joseph Kahn has created a version of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers like we’ve never seen before! Check out the video below!

Why you might ask did Shankar chose the Power Rangers? Well…he answers that question in the video below. Enjoy

An actual reboot of the Power Rangers is in development at Lionsgate with a script by Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller. It’s set for release in theaters on July 22, 2016.

Liz’s review: ‘LIFE INSIDE OUT’ and interview with star Maggie Baird

LIO poster

My mother always encouraged us to have music on in the kitchen. While she baked or did her lesson plans for her art classes, or made dinner. Chicago, Huey Lewis, and Disney soundtracks were blasting in our car rides back and forth to dance lessons, or girl scouts, or my brother’s karate lessons. My mom was a superhero. My mom is still a super hero. If I can be half the mother she is, I will consider myself a lucky woman. In the new film LIFE INSIDE OUT we are privy to the perfect example of how creative mothers reach their children in very different and very special ways. The talented acting/writing team, Maggie Baird and Lori Nasso, bring to life a story of so many mothers who have lost their own identity to raising their children and keeping their families intact. The story comes from Baird’s true life experience with son Finneas O’Connell. When Baird’s husband was forced to take a job that kept him away from the family, it took an emotional toll on then 12 year old Finneas. Once Maggie rediscovers her songwriting roots, Finneas follows suit. Much to everyone’s surprise, Finneas is a bit of a musical prodigy is his own right. Writing his own songs allowed him to creatively process his own angst and bond with Maggie on a new level. Read More →

New Clip: ‘Top Five’ Written & Directed by Chris Rock Looks Hilarious

top five poserPulsing with the rhythm of his greatest stand-up, Chris Rock’s TOP FIVE takes things to the next level, reveling in the high and the low, and blending a star-studded comedic romp with an irresistible romance. TOP FIVE digs under the surface of show business, politics, rap, and the exigencies of being black and famous today—holding it all up to the light in the way only Chris Rock can. Mingling echoes of Woody Allen and Dick Gregory with the energy of Kanye West and Jay Z, TOP FIVE is an original and radically new kind of American movie. Written, directed by, and starring Chris Rock, TOP FIVE tells the story of New York City comedian-turned-film star Andre Allen, whose unexpected encounter with a journalist (Rosario Dawson) forces him to confront the comedy career—and the past—that he’s left behind. NYFF 52- Liz’s Review: ‘Shorts Program 2’ is full of delight, fright, and insight

nyff New York Film Festival 2014

While I was not afforded to time to attend last week’s first round of Shorts, today I had the pleasure of seeing The NYFF52 Shorts Program 2, a collection of really well done films. Engrossing, never dull, and surely surprising.
