HEAT OF MADNESS

heat of madness main still

Karim Ouelhaj‘s Megalomaniac shocked audiences in 2022. I will never be able to erase some of those images, no matter how hard I try. In his latest film HEAT OF MADNESS, a con man hopes to score big with one last heist, but everything goes wrong. Scola gets double-crossed and lets his loose cannon persona take hold. Putting his pregnant wife in the direct line of fire, he embarks on a violent rampage for revenge, or so he thinks.

Heat of Madness is a morality trial, and Scola is failing. Ouelhaj offers audiences a splintered and enigmatic journey through time. One could draw comparisons to Ebenezer Scrooge’s emotional journey, or even Dorothy Gale, as figures from all timelines interact like ghosts or lost souls.

As Scola wreaks havoc in the real world, a mysterious and apprehensive young woman appears as a moral compass. But Scola has no interest and revels in her beratement. But her emotional importance quite literally bears the weight of grief for Scola, but he is too blind to understand.

Julie Carrol plays our cryptic Petite Pomme with a purity and gentleness that perfectly balances Scola’s vitriol. Her physical performance is spectacular. Olivier Picard is our leading man. He is a selfish, violent, and abusive figure that audiences will loathe with a passion. That is the ultimate compliment in the acting world.

Music by Empusae is undeniably sinister. Bernard Vervoort’s cinematography is strikingly framed. Truly breathtaking scenes look like still-life paintings. These moments often give the viewer a moment to take a physical breath from the story’s intensity.

The script is twofold: stylistically beautiful and a challenge to follow. Scola’s journey is fascinating, and I encourage viewers to take every beat in. Memory, hallucinations, and consequences finally get some semblance of an explanation, but not until an hour and ten minutes into the film.

Karim Ouelhaj creates yet another mind-blowing narrative that pushes boundaries off the cliff. Audiences will find their hearts in their throats as they sift through various realities. Heat of Madness is a thought-provoking examination of regret, loneliness, anger, and redemption. Questions will gnaw at you long after the screen goes dark.

Fantasia 2022 review: The brutality of ‘Megalomaniac’ is burned into my brain.

MEGALOMANIAC

Offspring of the most notorious and elusive serial killer in Belgium’s history, Martha must navigate her brother taking up the family mantle, working a job where she is the victim of sexual abuse, and the fragility of her sanity. Writer-director Karim Ouelhaj gives Fantasia 2022 audiences one of the most brutal and brilliant films of the year.

The sumptuous score from Gary Moonboots and Simon Fransquet is a push and pull between heaven and hell. The production design and camera work will haunt your nightmares. Simultaneously hideous and magnificent, the vast family mansion Felix and Martha reside in has cracking plaster walls, carved mahogany structures, and a plethora of aggressively posed taxidermy creatures. It’s Dracula’s wet dream.

Actress Eline Schumacher leaves her soul on the screen. The slow, deliberate fracturing of the human psyche is breathtaking. It’s a brave, emotionally wrought, and award-worthy performance.

It’s an understatement to say that the imagery in Megalomaniac made my blood run cold. I winced as I witnessed unapologetic violence on women’s bodies. The fear Martha experiences had a visceral effect on me. The film examines the patriarchal power structure in a heartbreaking and infuriating way. Ouelhaj nails it. The term “triggering” is not one I use often, but Megalomaniac encompasses that word from start to finish. The cyclical nature of evil cannot be denied.
