Review: ‘American Murder: The Family Next Door’

SYNOPSIS:

In 2018, 34-year-old Shanann Watts and her two young daughters went missing in Frederick, Colorado. As heartbreaking details emerged, their story made headlines worldwide.  Told entirely through archival footage that includes social media posts, law enforcement recordings, text messages and never-before-seen home videos, director Jenny Popplewell pieces together an immersive and truthful examination of a police investigation and a disintegrating marriage. AMERICAN MURDER: THE FAMILY NEXT DOOR is the first film to give a voice to the victims.

I am a huge fan of true crime. Whenever I can’t find something I want to watch on television, I’ll immediately turn to one of the numerous 24hr true crime oriented stations and leave it on in the background. My husband and I always joke when an episode begins, “The husband did it.” We laugh because it’s cliche but usually true. Netflix’s new documentary from director Jenny Popplewell is a different approach to this kind of investigation on film. This carefully crafted doc has an intimacy that feels invasive. That is entirely the point. Through eerie bodycam footage, you’re in the room experiencing what officers, friends, and family did as the truth is slowly revealed. The audience feels like they are living this tragedy in realtime.

We are privy to  Shanann’s text messages that lead up to these horrific events. We see videos she shared with her followers on social media.  Little by little, we see the deterioration of a relationship. Rather than the stale, faceless narration that usually accompanies the genre, we are hearing directly from Shanann as she confronts her own faults, questions her choices, and gets real with her husband Chris, and her closest friends. It is one of the most brutally honest docs I’ve seen. Oftentimes cringeworthy. You’ll think to yourself, “I shouldn’t be reading these messages,” but they are essential pieces of the puzzle.

Once the truth came to light, I was weeping. As a mother of two young children, the same ages as Bella and Cece, I could not wrap my brain around these atrocities. I cannot seem to shake this film. It is a visceral sadness. Fair warning to any viewer with children of their own. This will tap into something primal. The most successful aspect of this film is that it focuses solely on Shanann and the girls. No traditional sitdown interviews with anyone, with the exception of video footage of Chris and the police while he is interrogated. There are zero crime photos or autopsy reports. It is the most humanizing true crime doc out there. Netflix and Popplewell have given genre fans a new form of storytelling and a voice to the victims.

AMERICAN MURDER: THE FAMILY NEXT DOOR will be released globally on Netflix on September 30.

Netflix News: Adam Sandler & Chris Rock will release ‘The Week Of’ in 2018

Netflix announced today that comedy icons Adam Sandler and Chris Rock will reunite to star in a new Netflix original film set to begin production in Long Island, New York this summer.  The Week Of will be directed by veteran Saturday Night Live writer and producer Robert Smigel.  The movie covers the week of preparation for a wedding in which Sandler’s daughter is marrying Rock’s son.  Happy Madison Productions’ Adam Sandler and Allen Covert will serve as producers and Barry Bernardi and Tim Herlihy will serve as executive producers.  Sandler and Smigel co-wrote the script.  The film will premiere globally on Netflix in 2018.

“Adam Sandler and Chris Rock are cornerstones of the Netflix comedy family and we are over the moon about these two legends reuniting to give our members worldwide a healthy dose of the hilarity that they have been creating together for years. Similar in the romantic comedy tone of Sandler’s most recent film Sandy Wexler, this film will be the perfect vehicle for Sandler and Rock and their millions of fans around the world,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer.

Sandler, whose films have grossed over $3 billion, dominated box offices around the world with such films as Grown Ups, Billy Madison, Big Daddy and The Waterboy.  In 2014, the multi-hyphenate actor, writer, producer and occasional singer-songwriter set his sights on conquering the streaming world and his films have found enormous success on Netflix.  Sandler’s first three Netflix films, The Ridiculous 6, The Do-Over, and the recently launched Sandy Wexler are three of the biggest film releases ever on Netflix.  This film, which marks the reunion of Rock and Sandler who last starred together in the hit comedies Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2, is the fourth film in Happy Madison Productions’ original deal with Netflix.  Recently, the deal was extended to include four additional feature films.

Sandler began his career as a stand-up comedian and joined Saturday Night Live as a writer and featured player before founding Happy Madison Productions. He went on to star, produce and write numerous films which went on to become box office hits.  Sandler has received critical accolades for his work in Punch-Drunk Love, Reign Over Me, and Funny People. He will soon be seen in Noah Baumbach’s upcoming comedy The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) alongside Dustin Hoffman, Ben Stiller and Emma Thompson.  The film will premiere at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and will be released by Netflix later this year.

Rock is a four-time Emmy and three-time Grammy award-winning producer, writer, actor, director, best-selling author and comedian.  Rock, who began his career working with Sandler in the 1990’s on Saturday Night Live, has had starring roles in films ranging from Down to Earth, Head of State, 2 Days in New York and Top Five, which he also wrote and directed.  Rock has leant his voice to the hit animated film series Madagascar; produced the hit television series Everybody Hates Chris; and has won awards and acclaim for his hit comedy specials. In addition to Grown Ups, Rock also starred with Sandler in The Longest Yard. Rock and Netflix are also working together on two stand up comedy specials which Rock will star in.  Additionally, Rock appeared in the Netflix’s A Very Murray Christmas special with Bill Murray.  Rock is currently traveling the US on the first leg of his Total Blackout Tour 2017.  This is the acclaimed comedian’s first tour in over 9 years.

Upcoming 2017 Netflix Original film releases include David Michôd’s War Machine starring Brad Pitt, Meg Tilly, Tilda Swinton, Topher Grace, Lakeith Stanfield and Sir Ben Kingsley; Bong Joon-Ho’s Okja starring Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Lily Collins, Steven Yeun; Jim Strouse’s The Incredible Jessica James starring Jessica Williams and Chris O’Dowd; Marti Noxon’s To The Bone starring Lily Collins; Adam Wingard’s Death Note starring Nat Wolff, Lakeith Stanfield and Margaret Qualley; Duncan Jones’  Mute starring Alex Skarsgård, Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux; Dee Rees’ Mudbound starring Carey Mulligan, Mary J. Netflix News: Louis C.K. special April 4th!

In his new standup 2017, Louis C.K. muses on religion, eternal love, giving dogs drugs, email fights, teachers and more in a live performance from Washington, D.C.

Louis C.K. 2017 will debut exclusively on Netflix globally on April 4.

Comedian, actor, writer, producer, director and editor, Louis C.K. will debut two new stand-up comedy specials exclusively on Netflix, the world’s leading Internet TV network. The first of the specials, titled 2017, was filmed in Washington DC, and will premiere April 4, everywhere Netflix is available.

“Louis has been one of the most innovative comedy voices in this new era of stand up. He has also been a thought leader in the business of comedy. We have marveled at his creativity and his ability to invent comedically and commercially, and are thrilled that he is bringing his newest specials to Netflix,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix.

Six-time Emmy Award winner Louis C.K. is one of the most honest and respected comedic voices of his generation, finding success in both television and film as well as the live stage. Louis can most recently be seen starring in Horace and Pete, a drama series he both wrote and directed. The show debuted in January 2016 and was directly distributed through his website, louisck.net, before Hulu acquired exclusive streaming rights in December. Louis will also be heard as the voice of “Lou” on the upcoming animated series The Cops, which he co-created. The comedy received a 10-episode, straight-to-series order at TBS and is set to premiere in 2018. Most notably, Louis served as executive producer, writer, director, editor, and star of FX’s Peabody Award winning hit show Louie, which has garnered multiple Emmy award nominations and wins for 5 seasons. Under his multi-year development deal with FX, Louis also serves as co-writer and producer on Baskets starring Zach Galifianakis and the critically-acclaimed Better Things starring Pamela Adlon. Louis also serves as executive producer on Amazon’s One Mississippi, a comedy based on the life of comedian Tig Notaro that was recently picked up for a second season.

Louis has received over 30 Emmy nominations throughout his career, including wins for “Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series” for his work on Louie and awards for “Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special” for his standup comedy specials.

On stage, Louis continues to cement his status as one of the most innovative standup comedians of all time. Always one to experiment, he released his 2011 standup special, Louis C.K. Live at the Beacon Theater, directly to consumers through his website for $5. The move was hailed as groundbreaking and was a tremendous success, and he donated a large portion of the proceeds to charity. He released his latest stand-up special, Louis C.K. Live From The Comedy Store, in the same manner in January 2015, a few months before the special premiered on FX.

In January 2015, he became the first comedian to sell out Madison Square Garden three times for the same tour. The third show was recorded and released as a digital audio download on his website, which went on to take home a 2016 Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. The following year, as part of an international tour that culminated in this latest special, Louis broke his own record by selling out Madison Square Garden 5 times over as well as arenas all over the country.

In the film world, Louis could most recently be heard as the voice of “Max” in Illumination’s box office smash animated film The Secret Life of Pets. Previously, he starred alongside Bryan Cranston and Elle Fanning in Trumbo, opposite Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, and appeared in American Hustle, which was awarded “Best Picture – Comedy or Musical” at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards.

Netflix News: Brad Pitt & Tilda Swinton in teaser for ‘War Machine’ – available May 26th

Oh, Netflix. You are truly worth $11.99 per month.

An absurdist war story for our times, writer-director David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) recreates a U.S. General’s roller-coaster rise and fall as part reality, part savage parody – raising the specter of just where the line between them lies today. His is an exploration of a born leader’s ultra-confident march right into the dark heart of folly. At the story’s core is Brad Pitt’s sly take on a successful, charismatic four-star general who leapt in like a rock star to command NATO forces in Afghanistan, only to be taken down by a journalist’s no-holds-barred exposé.

The Netflix original film is inspired by the book The Operators: The Wild & Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan by the late journalist Michael Hastings. Joining Pitt in War Machine is a highly decorated cast including Tilda Swinton, Sir Ben Kingsley, Anthony Michael Hall, Topher Grace, Will Poulter, Lakeith Stanfield, Emory Cohen, John Magaro, RJ Cyler, Alan Ruck, Scoot McNairy and Meg Tilly. Ian Bryce and Plan B’s Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Brad Pitt serve as producers. James Skotchdopole serves as executive producer. The film will be released on Netflix on May 26, 2017.
