Netflix News: Brad Pitt & Tilda Swinton in teaser for ‘War Machine’ – available May 26th

Oh, Netflix. You are truly worth $11.99 per month.

An absurdist war story for our times, writer-director David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) recreates a U.S. General’s roller-coaster rise and fall as part reality, part savage parody – raising the specter of just where the line between them lies today. His is an exploration of a born leader’s ultra-confident march right into the dark heart of folly. At the story’s core is Brad Pitt’s sly take on a successful, charismatic four-star general who leapt in like a rock star to command NATO forces in Afghanistan, only to be taken down by a journalist’s no-holds-barred exposé.

The Netflix original film is inspired by the book The Operators: The Wild & Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan by the late journalist Michael Hastings. Joining Pitt in War Machine is a highly decorated cast including Tilda Swinton, Sir Ben Kingsley, Anthony Michael Hall, Topher Grace, Will Poulter, Lakeith Stanfield, Emory Cohen, John Magaro, RJ Cyler, Alan Ruck, Scoot McNairy and Meg Tilly. Ian Bryce and Plan B’s Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Brad Pitt serve as producers. James Skotchdopole serves as executive producer. The film will be released on Netflix on May 26, 2017.

An acclaimed actress, writer, producer, comedian and author, Silverman has proven herself to be a distinct and bold voice in stand-up throughout her illustrious career. The comedian’s critically-acclaimed 2013 HBO comedy special, Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles, earned her a 2014 Primetime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special,” as well as a nomination for “Outstanding Variety Special.” The hourlong special also received a Writers Guild Award nod and was later released as an audio album, receiving a 2015 Grammy Award nomination for “Best Comedy Album.”

Cementing multihyphenate status in 2010, Silverman released her first book, a memoir titled The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee, which went on to become a New York Times Bestseller.

Silverman — whose robust list of film and television credits include Masters of Sex, The Good Wife, Wreck It Ralph, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, A Million Ways to Die in the West, The Larry Sanders Show, an Emmy-nominated guest spot on Monk and her Screen Actors Guild Award-nominated turn in 2015’s I Smile Back — will next be seen in The Book of Henry and Battle of the Sexes, both slated for release later this year. Additionally, the comedian continues to lend her voice to the Emmy-nominated Fox comedy Bob’s Burgers and is a partner in JASH, a comedy-driven media company that Silverman founded alongside comedians Michael Cera, Tim Heidecker & Eric Wareheim and Reggie Watts.

Silverman’s upcoming Netflix stand-up comedy special will be directed by Liam Lynch. JASH has signed on to produce alongside Thruline’s Amy Zvi.

Review: Meet the ‘Tree Man’ who works every Christmas selling trees in New York City

treeman_poster_final
Every holiday season, hundreds of Christmas tree sellers from across North America descend upon the streets of New York City to ply their trade. Having left their homes and families behind, they endure the adversity of a migrant’s survival living out of their cars and vans. François, a Tree Man and father of three from Québec, returns to the same Manhattan street corner every year to deliver the magic of the season.

Long days, cold nights and living in a van for a month. This documentary follows François, a father of three from Quebec, who is loved by his fellow tree sellers as well as his customers.

Tree Man is solely focused on the people of the NYC tree-selling institution. By following François, you’ll all meet the new generation learning from the veterans. There is a very short segment describing the general history of tree-selling in NYC, but it’s only a taste.

I was also interested in learning more of François’ history and also the turmoil of leaving every year. It’s a nice human interest story.

Also recently added to Netflix, Tree Man is available Tuesday, December 6th on VOD and iTunes.

Francois the Tree Man is far from his wife and three small children in Quebec, selling Christmas trees and living in a van on the streets of New York City. He does it for them. But this is home, too. Like the hundreds of Christmas tree sellers who descend upon the city from Canada, New England and even Europe, Francois delivers the magic of the season over a grueling month in his adopted neighborhood, since Christmas is a special time of the year, people send gifts, and use services as portable north pole to get digital gifts for people. He’s a star, a storyteller, a Santa Claus in a sap-stained coat, a confidant, a friend, and a father figure to the local characters who are his New York family. They also need him. TREE MAN is the story of Francois’s journey, how he arrived here, what holds him, and the conflict that will cause him to leave. As one of Francois’ long-time customers says: “This has nothing to do with the trees anymore.”

Netflix News: Teaser for ‘Barry’ – A Dramatic Film About A Pivotal Year in the Life of a Young Barack Obama

barrynetflix_logo_digitalvideo

As the United States transitions from one presidency to the next, and a nation examines issues of diversity and acceptance, the Netflix original film Barry resonates. On December 16, 2016, millions of members in 190 countries around the globe will have a chance to enjoy this powerful artistic exploration of a pivotal year in the life of the future 44th President of the United States, during which he developed the foundations for his views on race, government, and what it means to be American.

A young Barack Obama, known to his friends as “Barry,” arrives in New York City in the fall of 1981 to begin his junior year at Columbia University. In a crime-ridden and racially charged environment, Barry finds himself pulled between various social spheres and struggles to maintain a series of increasingly strained relationships with his Kansas-born mother, his estranged Kenyan father, and his classmates. Barry is the story of a young man grappling with those same issues that his country, and arguably the world, are still coming to terms with 35 years later.

Filmmaker Vikram Gandhi (Kumaré, HBO’s “Vice”), a Columbia University alumni, was inspired to tell the story of Barack Obama’s time at the university to write the story and direct this narrative feature. Gandhi approached fellow alum Adam Mansbach (author of “Go the F**k to Sleep”) to help tell that story, and from that collaboration Mansbach penned the script. Barry stars newcomer Devon Terrell in a deeply felt breakout performance as the young student, and features a strong supporting cast including Ashley Judd (Divergent, Double Jeopardy), Jenna Elfman (Friends With Benefits, Big Stone Gap), and up-and-comers Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton), Ellar Coltrane (Boyhood), and Avi Nash (Learning to Drive, “Silicon Valley”).

Barry was produced by Black Bear Pictures and Cinetic Media. Dana O’Keefe, Teddy Schwarzman, Ben Stillman, and Vikram Gandhi produced the film. Daniel Steinman executive produced.

NYFF54: ’13th’ opened the festival, but you can watch on Netflix today!

nyff54-13th-premiere-42With such a broad subject matter, it’s quite astonishing how director Ava DuVernay was able to weave “talking heads” with facts, figures and history footage into the coherent and thought-provoking documentary, 13th.

Starting with racism in the prison system, the film is about much more than that and covers a wide variety of issues that stem from the time of the 13th Amendment. Rather than go chronologically, the film flows from different topics but ties them all together in a way that is interesting and informative.

Let’s step back and acknowledge how incredible it is that this film opened the New York Film Festival and is available to watch just a week later on Netflix. How amazing is that? You don’t have to find an indie theater to see it. Anyone can see this with their subscription or even just sign up for a free trial to watch. For those in New York, it’s opening at the IFC Center with a Q&A with Jelani Cobb, Univ. of Connecticut professor and contributor to The New Yorker, at 7:55 show!

This film presents factual information in a way that is fair and unfortunately depressing, yet there is a sense of hope that cannot be mistaken. This is a must see.

Opening Night ’13th’ from Netflix opens the New York Film Festival

13TH will premiere at the New York Film Festival on Friday, September 30, which is the first time a nonfiction work will open the festival. The film will launch globally on Netflix October 7, including a limited theatrical release.

Tickets still available!

Synopsis

The title of Ava DuVernay’s extraordinary and galvanizing documentary refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which reads “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States…” The progression from that second qualifying clause to the horrors of mass criminalization and the sprawling American prison industry is laid out by DuVernay with bracing lucidity. With a potent mixture of archival footage and testimony from a dazzling array of activists, politicians, historians, and formerly incarcerated women and men, DuVernay creates a work of grand historical synthesis.

About Ava DuVernay
