Review: ‘Baywatch’ – A Summer Blockbuster Is Coming…

Baywatch

Theatrical Release Date: May 25, 2017

Guest review from Reel Reviews Over Brews

Baywatch is based on the popular 90’s TV series starring David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson.  The film stars Dwayne Johnson, playing Mitch Buchannon, who is the head of the Baywatch lifeguard team. The team also includes CJ Parker (Kelly Rohrback) and Stephanie Holden (Ilfenesh Hadera). Mitch has to constantly prove why his team is needed to keep the bay safe. When drugs and dead bodies wash ashore their team has never been more important. The Baywatch team holds tryouts for the few open positions available, which is where we meet Matt Brody (Zac Efron), Summer Quinn (Alexandra Daddario), and Ronnie Greenbaum (Jon Bass).

After Ronnie and Summer prove themselves worthy of the team, Matt Brody continues to bump heads with Mitch resulting in a head-to-head competition with comically ridiculous events that have nothing to do with lifeguarding, but eventually Matt ends up on the team. Victoria Leeds (Priyanka Chopra) is quickly identified as the villain of the film and is suspected of heading a drug ring. The Baywatch team plans how to take down Victoria and preserve the future of the bay, while Matt Brody questions why it’s even the responsibility of lifeguards.

This movie was definitely not meant to be taken seriously… and at points throughout the film, pokes fun at how ridiculous the situation might be. Plain and simple, this IS your typical summer blockbuster movie. A decent amount of action and just enough comedy to make this an enjoyable movie, not to mention, there is definitely no shortage of attractive people.

Jon Bass leads the way in the comedy field with several funny moments as the tubby nerd who has a thing for Kelly Rohrback‘s character. Johnson and Efron have plenty of good scenes together and a great running joke that Johnson refuses to call Efron by his actual name. We really enjoyed this movie… more than expected. The plot was simple, but this movie was just meant to entertain the hell out of you. It accomplished that, in our eyes. You can’t go wrong with explosions and comedy, but we certainly felt the need to overhaul our beach bodies after it was over.

Reel ROB Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

This story is breaking…more as it becomes available.

Michael’s Review: ‘San Andreas’

San Andreas-00006

Actor Dwayne Johnson returns to the big screen with the newest disaster flick San Andreas, a film that will no doubt continue Johnson’s string of high budget, low payoff films that have plagued his career since he broke into Hollywood over a decade ago. Director by Brad Peyton (Journey 2: The Mysterious Islandhelms this “by the book” action fluff film that will wow the visual effects fan out there, but will leave audiences wishing that a natural disaster would wipe this film from existence.

San Andreas-00002

Ray Gaines (Dwayne Johnson) is a Los Angeles Fire Department rescue-helicopter pilot who is credited with over 600 rescues in his career. Gaines, a family oriented man who recently separated from his wife Emma (Carla Gugino), counts his daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) as his biggest accomplishment and will do anything to protect her. Having previously lost their other daughter to a freak accident, Ray and Emma are left to continue separate lives, one that includes Emma’s new boyfriend David (Ioan Gruffudd), a wealthy architect whom Emma and Blake intend to move in with. Ray’s plans for spending a final weekend with Blake before she begins university in the San Francisco area are dashed when a major earthquake hits Nevada and his squad is mobilizes to respond while Daniel offers to fly Blake up north on his private jet.

San Andreas-00003

Revelations are uncovered that the Nevada quake is only the beginning as Lawrence Hayes (Paul Giamatti), a seismology professor at CalTech, has reason to believe the seismic activity is headed towards California. Before Hayes can get word out to the public, the first of many big tremors hits downtown Los Angeles, where Emma is lunching in a high rise restaurant as the building begins to crumble around her. Ray, sensing danger, swoops in and rescues her from the roof in his chopper. Blake, now caught in the earthquakes path, reaches out to her father for help. Realizing what they must do, Ray and Emma race up the coast to save their only daughter before it’s too late. But their treacherous journey north is only the beginning, and when they think the worst may be over…it’s just getting started.

San Andreas-00004

Director Brad Peyton, along with cinematographer Steve Yedlin and VFX supervisor Colin Strause, have created a thrilling spectacle with intense visual effects and non stop action that will have audience members holding on to their seat, but the dialogue and execution of the human aspects leave this film lacking the heart it needs to succeed. Dwayne Johnson does a worthy job holding the film together, but the wrestler turned actor is given very few opportunities to show off why he is the most popular action star in Hollywood these days. Alexandra Daddario is a strong presence during her screen time in the film. Her character teeters on the edge of cliche as the damsel in distress, but she does her best to separate herself from the norm and create a character with strong undertones. Veteran actor Paul Giamatti does his best to work with a weak script and even weaker science but ultimately turns in a stale performance with very little substance. Actress Carla Gugino does little to add to the dramatic aspects of the film and turns in a rather forgetful performance.

san andreas 5

Overall, San Andreas is not as bad as recent disaster films such as 2012, but falls victim to too many cliches and weak story telling to be counted as good. Should you see the film? Fans of Dwayne Johnson will be entertained, fans of disaster films and visual effects will be entertained, slightly, but not many others. In a summer filled with hit or miss films, San Andreas is a slight miss.

Michael’s Review: ‘Furious 7’

Furious7onelastposterbig

Nevermind the overall story, Furious 7 is a wonderful tribute to the late Paul Walker. The actor, who died in a single car accident during a break in filming, left a huge void for the cast and crew, who scrambled to piece together their lives and reinvent the film so it would not only continue the franchise, but also honor Walker’s legacy following the tragedy. After thisa lot of the member started  to be more careful at driven and even a few talked about the Blackbox my car products, cameras for the dash of your car for more safety and to avoid any misunderstanding in the future to have it all in a recording.

Director James Wan (Insidious) takes the helm for this ride as the the crew take on their toughest opponent yet. Buckle up, this fast paced, action packed franchise shows no signs of slowing down.

furious7-4

The events of Fast & Furious 6 have begun to haunt the crew as the older brother of Owen Shaw has come to claim vengeance. Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), a former British secret service assassin who is more dangerous than anyone the crew has faced in their lives, is on a mission to take down those who almost killed his brother. After Shaw puts Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) in the hospital, Dom (Vin Diesel) realizes that his family is in danger. A simultaneous attack on his home and the death of long time friend Han, heightens the situation and Dom decides to take matters into his own hands before anyone else dies.

furious7-1

Frank Petty (Kurt Russell), a covert ops director, enlists Dom to complete a mission to find a hacker named Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) and bring back a high tech surveillance program called the God’s Eye, but getting Ramsey back isn’t an easy task. Kidnapped by a known terrorist named Jakande (Djimon Hounsou), things gets complicated and Dom must rely on his crew to help complete the mission as only they can.  With Shaw in toe and the prize in sight, the mission will take the crew across the globe in the race of their lives. Brian (Paul Walker), Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), and Tej (Ludacris) set off for one last ride, to take down the bad guys and protect the lives of those they love.

furious7-5

Director James Wan should be commended for finding a way to complete this film in the face of such adversity. Paul Walker was the number two most important character in this franchise and his loss will be a huge one moving forward, but the way that Diesel, Wan and the studio found a way to complete his scenes and send the actor out on a high note is tremendous. Cast and crew pulled this film together after the tragedy and you can tell the passion they felt to honor the fallen actor with the best film they could.  Like the other films in the Fast and the Furious franchise, you need to turn your brain off before entering the theater, but this film is an action packed thrill ride from beginning to end that won’t disappoint. Furious 7 may not win an Oscar, as Diesel suggests it should, but it sure is a blast to watch.
