BACKSTAGE MADNESS
Filmmaker Amanbek Azhymat‘s Fantasia 2026 dark comedy BACKSTAGE MADNESS is every writer’s intrusive thoughts come true. Hilarious and bold from the moment the film opens, the story begins with a screenwriter overwhelmed by his creations who seem to haunt and judge him. A slimy producer concocts a wacky scheme, promising big bucks in return. Each film investor must be featured in the script as they are funding the film. But with every dollar comes another genre switch, resulting in a hybrid script that has no right being this entertaining.
This pay-for-play approach raises the stakes for both our screenwriter and the audience. Anything is fair game as we go along on this wild ride. We are treated to an insanely creative and over-the-top plot rollout in real time. It shouldn’t work, but it absolutely does.
This fly by the seat of your pants approach leaves you salivating for the next scene. The meta script follows a crime boss, his deadbeat clients, his morally conscious thugs, and the one man who alludes capture due to mistaken identity and a murder plot gone awry. Each cast member plays multiple roles, and they nail them.
Performances are hysterical across the board. The practical FX and make-up are fantastic. Discerning meta script from actual script is fun and shockingly uncomplicated. Azhymat and Janysh Dadabaev‘s editing is outstanding. Azhymat flips between scripts with typewriting transition moments, introducing the next act of the meta script, his former characters cheering him on when needed.
Dynamic camerawork by Bekzat Turarbek Uulu enhances the comedy and mirrors the stylized genre of each scene. The score does the same, changing up to match any particular scene’s vibe. I equate the energy to something like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
BACKSTAGE MADNESS is a direct dig at the profit side of Hollywood, but moreover, it is an ode to the physical and emotional toll of creativity. Within the brilliant chaos, it honors the magnitude of power a writer truly possesses. BACKSTAGE MADNESS is never-ending fun.
