Originally slated to open on March 13, 2015, Warner Bros. today decided to push back Ron Howard’s upcoming feature In the Heart of the Sea, starring Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), Cillian Murphy (Sunshine), Ben Wishaw (Cloud Atlas), Tom Holland (The Impossible), Brendan Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow) and Jordi Molla (Riddick). The film will now open December 11, 2015. Moving into its March 13 spot is the companies newest action film Run All Night starring Liam Neeson which was previously set for an April 17 release.
While the move seems that the company may have doubts as to how the movie will play to audiences, the move could also be a vote of confidence to the film as December release offers the film a better chance to be looked at during awards season.
The film, set in 1820, follows the New England whaling ship Essex which is attacked by a very large and enraged bull sperm whale, a real-life maritime disaster that would inspire Melville’s Moby-Dick. But there is more to the story as the crew struggles to survive as the crew is shipwrecked at sea for 90 days and are stranded more than a thousand miles from land.
