Snake Plissken will be coming to a theater near you sooner than you thought! Deadline is reporting that 20th Century Fox has won the remake rights to John Carpenter’s beloved sci-fi action film and Carpenter himself is set to serve as executive producer. Yes, I said John Carpenter will be involved! Praise!

Several failed attempts to resurrect the franchise have come in recent years; Len Wiseman planned his version of the film that would have starred Gerard Butler as Plissken role but ultimately fell through, then New Line Cinema tried their luck with director Breck Eisner attached but were unsuccessful, and finally Joel Silver and StudioCanal took a crack and failed. The film was considered a lost cause by many which today’s news so surprising.

Escape From New York ultimate success revolves around the Plissken character. What made the film so amazing was the portrayal by film legend Kurt Russell as the brooding anti-hero. For any reboot to work it will depend on who they hire to replace the aging actor. Personally I’d love to see Russell return, but I am less confident that this will happen. The inclusion of John Carpenter, who directed the original and the 1996 sequel Escape from L.A, is a welcome bonus to this production, let’s hope Carpenter’s influence will shine through on the finished product.

The film does not have a director as of this post, but Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona of The Picture Company are attached to serve as producers.

Sign off! Who would you like to see Snake Plissken? Who would be the best director to take on this project?!
