Collider is reporting that Joaquin Phoenix is in final negotiations to play the lead role in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Doctor Strange film.
Rumors began circulating in July during the run up to San Diego Comic Con with many anticipating an announcement at the event, but no announcement was made. Recently, another name has surfaced as a candidate for the Sorcerer Supremer, Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), but Collider reports this isn’t the case. Phoenix‘s involvement in the film is believed to be all but a sure thing and that an announcement could come from Marvel at any time.
An official release date for Doctor Strange has not yet been announced, but it will be a part of Marvel Studios’ Phase 3 films which begin after Avengers: Age of Ultron.
