Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. has hired screenwriter Carl Ellsworth (Disturbia) to pen the reboot of 80’s hit movie Gremlins. Ellsworth is currently writing the upcoming Goosebumps adaptation for Columbia Pictures.
Talks of a reboot have been floating around Hollywood for years with many writers, including Seth Grahame-Smith (Abrahama Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), taking a shot at writing the script, but nothing that has sparked real interest from the studio. Deadline also notes that Chris Columbus was in talks to direct the reboot, but has opted to produce the film instead along with the original film’s executive producer Steven Spielberg.
The original Gremlins was a huge success when it was released in 1984 taking in $153 million dollars domestically. A sequel was made Gremlins 2: The New Batch, but was ultimately panned and ended any further films in the franchise until now.
