In the “I can’t make this stuff up” file, The Wrap is reporting that yet another reboot of the Shaft franchise is on its way. Today comes word that New Line Cinema has acquired the rights to the Shaft franchise and is partnering with Davis Entertainment’s John Davis, to develop a reboot.
Originally a 1970 novel by Ernest Tidyman, became a household name in the 1970’s with the feature film, directed by Gordon Parks and starring Richard Roundtree in the title role. The film went on to spawn two sequels, Shaft’s Big Score in 1972 and Shaft in Africa in 1973, both of which with met with mixed reactions. CBS picked up the rights and tried their luck at a weekly television show starring Roundtree, but ultimately failed to find it’s audience.
A reboot by director John Singleton and starring Samuel L. Jackson was released in 2000 to modest box office numbers. A film that wasn’t bad, but didn’t perform well enough for future installments.
No word on casting at this time, but safe bet that Idris Elba will be on someone’s speed dial.
