Review: ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ *SPOILER-FREE*

Ten years and eighteen movies have lead to this. Marvel Studios has been wildly successful in their films leading up to this moment, but this is quite possibly the biggest and most ambitious film of its kind. Avengers: Infinity War brings together the heroes of the MCU to take on Thanos, the mad titan, who is looks to fulfill his destiny of bringing together the infinity stones and reshaping the Universe. It’s all lead to this. Each past film was a piece in a larger puzzle and now it’s complete and the result exceeds expectations. Simply put, Avengers: Infinity War is epic.

Still broken following the events of Age of Ultron and Civil War, the Avengers are scattered across the galaxy. Thanos and his children have begun their quest in search of the infinity stones when they come across the Asgardian ship of Thor and his people, whom Thanos believes to be carrying the space stone. Seeing the sheer power of the mad titan, Hulk must reach Earth to warn the Avengers of the coming threat, but what he finds is a team shattered by squabble and a new group of heroes ready to take the fight to Thanos. The film is choked full of spoiler fodder at every corner so I will leave my summary there.

Directors Anthony and Joe Russo continue their onslaught into the MCU with yet another film worthy of calling the best and most ambitious, but this one certainly stands out above them all. Based on a storyline from the Marvel comics, the film is a re-imagining of the original story with obvious liberties, but nonetheless, works magnificently with the previous MCU films tying them all together nicely. The worry for some was the massive undertaking of the cast and how they would all fit into a 2 1/2 hour film, but the Russo’s and their writing team gave each subplot equal amounts of care and screen time without over saturation. And you would be hard pressed to find a weak link in the casting chain. Each actor shines in their corner of Infinity War with Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth and Zoe Saldana winning stand out stars.

Overall, Avengers: Infinity War is a overwhelmingly satisfying first act and will leave you speechless at the close. It’s a film that needs to be digested multiple times to catch everything you missed while you were trying to pick your jaw off the theatre floor as you look on in awe of the visual spectacle before you. I can’t wait for the next 10 years of the MCU. If Infinity War is any indication, the best is yet to come.

Review: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ *VERY minor plot details*

The Guardians are back and in a big way. James Gunn returns to helm the sequel to Marvel’s unlikely smash hit Guardians of the Galaxy looking to capitalize on the franchises soaring popularity injecting more humor, more spectacle and more all outrageous fun this time around. This film is not short on stimulation so marvel in the infinite glory that is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) are just a few weeks out from the events of the first film and their out to keep their good name by ridding the galaxy of those who would do it harm. Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), leader of the Sovereign race, has hired the Guardians for a mission in exchange for Gamora’s estranged sister Nebula (Karen Gillan), but situations turn sour as the Guardians find themselves on the other side of the fight. Facing certain death, a mystery traveler rescues the team and reveals himself to be Ego (Kurt Russell), Peter Quill’s missing father accompanied by his servant Mantis (Pom Klementieff).

Angry about the escape, Ayesha hires Yondu (Michael Rooker) and his crew to hunt down the Guardians and bring them back to pay for their crimes. The Ravagers head out to find the heroes while Quill comes to grip with his new found father; but could everything be as it appears? Facing a multitude of foes closing in on the team, they must align with some unusual allies to once again protect the galaxy from certain destruction. Can the Guardians remain vigilant in their quest for good to prevail or will outside forces pull the team apart and end their friendship forever?

Marvel continues to find the perfect directors to lead their franchises, bringing out the very best in the source material by allowing these directors to inject their unique style of storytelling. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Director James Gunn‘s radical departure from the core Marvel movies made the first film a surprise hit, but no one will be surprised when Vol. 2 wows audiences this weekend with its rare brand of humor and eye popping visuals. The cast, including Chris PrattZoe Saldana and Dave Bautista, are noticeably more comfortable this time around within their characters and within their collaboration with each other. Kurt Russell is an outstanding edition to this cast and, as the elder statesmen, brings out the very best in Pratt’s Star Lord during their emotional scenes.

Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is an absolute joy of a film. From start to finish, the ride is nothing short of exactly what you would expect from a James Gunn Guardians of the Galaxy film. Take the family, take the neighbors, take everyone you know and run to the theater to see this…and do NOT leave your seat throughout the credits…there is 5 extra scenes!

Michael’s Review: ‘Fantastic Four’

Fantastic Four Poster

After months of bad press and rumors about a dysfunctional set working environment, Fox has released their reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise for all of us to lay judgement on. Director Josh Trank’s (Chronicle) contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s first family is an unmitigated disaster from start to finish and will not only anger longtime fans of the comic, but it will annoy savvy film goers with a story that feels rushed and incomplete. This film is sadly another example of how to take a franchise, which is rich in history and beloved by millions, and suck the life out of it with unnecessary changes and inconsistent filmmaking. Fantastic Four is nowhere close to fantastic.

fantastic-four-2015-images-dimension

Childhood friends Reed Richards (Miles Teller) and Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell) have worked on building a teleporter out of spare parts from Ben’s family’s junkyard since the 5th grade. Now high school students, the duo enter their invention in the school fair, which catches the eye of Professor Franklin Storm (Reg E. Cathey), director of the Baxter Foundation, a science academy for brilliant young minds sponsored by the US Government. Reed is recruited to join them to help complete the work of Victor Von Doom (Toby Kebbell), a young genius who created the “Quantum Gate”, a teleporter similar to Reed’s invention.  Aided by scientist Sue Storm (Kate Mara) and technician Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan) along with Von Doom himself, Reed begins work on the machine with hopes to teleport the team to another dimension.

Fantastic Four1

After a successful test run,  the facility’s supervisor, Dr. Allen (Tim Blake Nelson), informs the team that they will assemble a team of NASA trained specialists to travel to Planet Zero (that’s what they’re calling the other dimension) and explore. This doesn’t sit right with Reed and Victor who convince Johnny and Ben to break protocol and ensure their legacy as the first men to teleport to another dimension. Of course things go wrong and the team is placed in danger, leaving them, along with Sue, with super-human abilities beyond their control.  From there the group is quarantined to be monitored by the government to ensure the safety of the planet, but when an opportunity to re-open to portal is presented to Dr. Allen, the temptation to explore the dimension is too much for him to deny, but what comes out is something that neither Dr. Allen, nor the team, are prepared to fight.

the_fantastic_four-still_2

On paper this seems like a pretty decent movie if it weren’t for the execution and script. The film takes a long time to get going and much of the film is people staring into computer screens with very little interaction. From there the film spirals into spliced together scenes attempting to tell a story, but there’s little character development past brief explanations of what abilities each has been given. The buildup to the showdown with Doctor Doom is as lackluster as you can get. There is no real understanding of what the characters intentions are, or why, past a few glimpses of Von Doom being anti establishment and the opportunity to create a strong rivalry between Reed and Doom was squandered throughout the film. The reveal of Doom’s look, a moment which should create excitement from the audience was met more with laughter and cringing as the attempt to re-create this iconic character with a new look was met unfavorably.

fantastic-four-human-torch

The films actors are presented with such little, if any, emotional exploration that much of the film each character seems to just be staring off into space waiting for something to happen. Miles Teller’s exploration into what makes Reed Richards, well, Reed Richards, is lost amongst his assumption (and seemingly the assumption of the director) of how a kid with exceptional intelligence would act, which isn’t very impressive. A lot of the venom spewed at this film was over the casting of Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, a white character in the comic book, but that’s not the problem with the character, the real problem is that he isn’t Johnny that we know and love from the comics. Jordan’s interpretation of Storm is more aggressive than playful which creates more of a character filled with angst more than ego. Jamie Bell is on screen so little that it is hard to interpret his character past introverted but loyal young man. Kate Mara spends most of her time staring at a computer screen so it’s hard to interpret the emotional center of her character, but the time she does have interacting with the other characters she is given very little to work work. A real shame for such a wonderful actress, but my real issue was with Toby Kebbell as Victor Von Doom. Kebbell is bland and lifeless and lends to credence to the iconic character he is portraying. At no point do you feel the menacing nature of Von Doom or understand the hatred that he emits towards the Fantastic Four. A lost opportunity on top of a series of poorly executed opportunities.

Overall, Trank’s Fantastic Four is a joyless, dull film that sacrifices everything that makes the comics so great for a gritty, realistic environment which doesn’t translate well with these characters to the screen. Chalk this one up to a promising film that fell short of its mark.

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios Find Their “SPIDER-MAN” Star and Director

who-do-you-really-think-should-play-spider-manSony Pictures and Marvel Studios are proud to announce that after a full worldwide casting search, Tom Holland will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man film, in theaters in IMAX and 3D on July 28, 2017.  The film will be directed by Jon Watts, director of Cop Car, the upcoming thriller that made its debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

Marvel and Sony Pictures, and producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal conducted an extensive search for both the actor and the director.  The studios and producers were impressed by Holland’s performances in The Impossible, “Wolf Hall,” and the upcoming In the Heart of the Sea, and by a series of complex screen tests.  Following Marvel’s tradition of working with the brightest next wave of directors, Watts also went through multiple meetings with Feige, Pascal, and the studio, before winning the job.

Commenting on the announcement, Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, “It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job.  The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding.  I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception.  I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent.  For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special.   All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”

Feige commented, “As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life.  We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”

Pascal added, “Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world.  With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Sony Pictures will finance and release worldwide the next installment of the $4 billion Spider-Man franchise on July 28, 2017, in a film co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the Web-Slinger.

Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.

Tom Hardy Wants to Play The Punisher and Sam Fisher in a ‘Splinter Cell’ movie…Badly

Mad Max

On the promotional trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road, Tom Hardy talked with Collider about his departure from the upcoming Suicide Squad film and this is what he had to say:

Collider: I heard Warner Bros. has a few more superhero movies, maybe one or two that they’re developing [Laughs].

HARDY: I want The Punisher… I want The Punisher, or Splinter Cell, I want something…I don’t know what I want.

You as Punisher could be very interesting.

HARDY: I’m not big enough to be The Punisher, I’m 5’9” [Laughs].

But I actually think that adds to the character.

HARDY: Frank Castle, I would love it. Is that him, isn’t it?

Yeah. It’s Frank Castle.

Now that Marvel has the rights back to The Punisher it seems likely that the company will want to introduce him at some point, but will it be into a Netflix series ala Daredevil or will it be a full fledged film? We will have to wait and see, but Tom Hardy as Frank would be as exciting as any casting you could announce!

As for Splinter CellHardy has already signed on to play Sam Fisher in the film. Director director Doug Liman recently exited the project. No word on a release date.

More as it becomes available
