Trailer VS Movie: ‘A Most Wanted Man’ With Philip Seymour Hoffman

a most wanted man 03

Rather than an all encompassing spy thriller involving people from all other the world, A Most Wanted Man focuses on a small group of people led by Gunther (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Does the movie compare to the trailer?

Well, yes and no. While it’s not as fast-paced as the trailer would make it out to be, it does drill down to a level that is both intimate and non-emotional. The characters are never given any backstory, so everything is inferred. You’re merely an observer. The point that hit it home for me was finding out this is from the same director, Anton Corbijn, as The American with George Clooney. I love that movie, but many were expecting a fast-paced thriller and it was the total opposite. Both The American and A Most Wanted Man both highlight the everyday actions people take to participate in the grand scheme.

And yes, Philip Seymour Hoffman does a German accent and it’s brilliant. Rachel McAdams has an accent as well and it’s completely natural. Perhaps it sounds silly but I appreciated seeing American actors playing non-Americans.

Also, the last line of the trailer is really out of context. You really need to see the entire film to appreciate it.
